Dont need a long term injury to play a rookie listed player anymore. Rookie List is just an extension to the senior list and on lower pay.

They don’t have to be on lower pay, but I think the base rookie contract amount isn’t included in the cap. But technically, there’s nothing stopping us from putting our highest paid player on the rookie list.

As long as we get to downhill ski and win by 10+ goals, Smith will be ok. It’s just when there’s pressure and we’re up against a good side that he’s crap.
Along with Laird kicking 15 mtrs sideways slowing us down and creating more pressure..
Finals will be an interesting watch given Nicks has refused to try a different look when he's had ample opportunities.

Wow i though a rookie listed player would at least be on lower pay. Well there you go.

Back in the early days they were, there was a designated rookie wage that wasn’t included in the cap. Then the AFL provided more flexibility with the rookie list allowing anyone to go on there but I think the rookie wage component remained out of the cap. That said, functionally you’re correct, the existing players that you risk delisting and rookieing would almost entirely be at the lower end of the pay scale.

Laird’s easy receive and sideways kick gets us near the boundary line, which is where Nicks wants us to ‘launch’ our forward movement from.

The way he goes and takes all the kick ins to boost his stats?
I guess if the depth of Football knowledge is raw stats....

Smithers is a line breaker he can create 60m plays. He can kick long goals. That can be important late into games.
Who is most likely to come on as sub and kick a late goal outside 50??

I don't like younger players being the sub, out of our older guys he is probably best suited.

Hopefully the sub is gone next year.

Doubt it, the AFL doesnt listen

Which isn’t 2 weeks. 2 more weeks would mean we’d have to win a final to get him to 300. If we lock in top 4, he might get an extra game off.

There are 8 rounds to go, he is currently on 292 games so add 8 and he gets to 300. If we qualify for finals, the finals game becomes his 300th if the club decides he misses the West Coast game.

Not sure what you are going on about - it is now a 23 game season, not 22.

We'll see where we sit, but i can almost guarantee him missing the West Coast game

If we finish 5th or 6th which IMO is likely, then its a home final and 300th

He finished so well last year he was out of our best 22 in round 1 2025. More to the point, he shifted because there was no spot for him, going against the whole "finished so well" part.

My opinion is if you've had four years on a list and you can't easily get past Lachie Murphy, you don't have a future at the AFL level. After all, on an individual level, most of football l is about ball winning/competitiveness, and if you can play midfield, you should have a game that'll hold up anywhere that isn't a KP role.
Let’s ignore our coaches depth chart for a moment (which has IMO had enough questionable-in-retrospect calls in past years to suggest it’s not perfect). Do you personally think Murphy plays the seventh fiddle forward role better than Taylor would? I’d argue that, at worst, their output is about equal. As you said before, there is such little difference between outputs for this role that it is essentially swapping deck chairs on the titanic.

Then why not give the role to a player with an even slightly better chance of improving and locking down a long-term career? There’s four years and 102 games difference between Taylor and Murphy. When their output is similarly low, you can’t ignore such glaring difference in potential and ceiling. Mind you, this also applies to Draper and (to a lesser extent) Pedlar. To reward SANFL form though I think Taylor deserves another crack.

He has played two sub games this year, against Brisbane he had 7 kicks, 6 were from kick ins...if Brisbane hadn't kicked so poorly, he'd have had bugger all. He played against Hawthorn and had one kick.

Raw stats say, if he doesn't take all the kick ins he doesn't affect the game as a sub, so to answer your question, not Smith, he's more likely to be hanging back near the goal post, waiting to take a long and to the right kick in.

He can't kick that far anymore. When's the last time he kicked a behind from outside 50 let alone a goal?

1 change i'd like to see would be Hugh Bond to replace a defender in the starting 22 (or Murphy and Brodie goes to Sub).

Then watch him walk directly to Kozzy Pickett at the opening bounce to wear him like a glove for 3 hours.

Not to mention, Taylor is more flexible, capable of playing inside midfield and pressure forward.

It honestly befuddles me that Murphy is preferred over him. Taylor's one weakness is his fitness, which isn't an issue in the sub role anyway.
