Port will be similar

Butters $1.5m
Nas $1.2
Rozee $1m plus
JHF???

I can't see how you can build a good team with more than 1 or 2 guys over $1m.

Port's team is full of scrubs that should be not playing AFL footy purely because their cap is skewed towards top talent.

It is like our SANFL team. AFL talent and top ups in the 22.
I read an article recently where they were saying all teams would have at least 3-4 players in the $1m plus category with the new cap - I think by 2027

Anyone like the idea of adding George Hewett? Older yes but in terms of mids who could be an easy add. Carlton’s on track for a fire sale if there older players. SA boy. In saying all this I would rather Draper get more mins but that doesn’t happen.

Bick’s record is actually pretty great. He also puts his cards on the table early, way before most phantoms land. He watches a ton of junior footy and makes his own opinions. I would take his opinion on a potential draftee over anyone else on here, and that’s saying something, because we have a few good judges of juniors.
You want to know who else was a virtual professor when it came to draftable kids? You people ever heard of Faith?. His takes were amazing, so insightful..especially on Thilthorpe. We were so lucky to have him posting on these very boards

I get your point but probably not. I think we still have a few "Hewitt" types to jettison ourselves.

There are some terrific older players out there but our profile and outlook suggests we should be recruiting players who can follow the list trajectory more than George can. (ANB excepted possibly.)

I was keen as an unrestricted free agent but he’s recently re-signed with Carlton.

I think people can hardly take shots at Bicks when a player he rated didn't end up making it as a player to the level Bicks held him at.

The AFL clubs spend millions on watching and rating the talent in the drafts. They have dozens of talent scouts around the country watching every kid and writing detailed reports back to the club. They interview the kids coaching staff at their school and club. They sit down and interview the kids family and friends, and then the actual kid himself. They spend hundreds and hundreds of hours watching game tapes, cutting up highlights, and putting every play and disposal under a microscope. It gets deeper than that even, but the point I am making is that list managers with 10,000 times the IP on the kids than Bicks has, still get the majority of their calls wrong.
If they can't nail 50% of their calls, I'm not sure anyone can expect Bicks to.
I wonder if this is true. Is it 10,000 times, or more like 1.5x? They pay scouts peanuts. The key thing is to watch a shit load of juniors and have good judgement.

But yes, considering 1. the extra info clubs have on a wider range of players, and 2. The fact that clubs get picks wrong all the time, Bicks’ record, and that of a few others on here, looks even better.

Yeah, Bicks has an excellent record. His opinions certainly come from what he sees with his own eyes.

You're right about scouts, though. Jon Ralph was on Fox talking about how club talent spotters are all back to being volunteers.

What does Bicks have access to? Watching some of the games they play when its available to him. Alot of their school games, and the private school system in Victoria is extremely impressive, and most kids have to give their school preference over their club, and their games arnt easily accessible to watch.
The clubs also get tailored tapes of each kid from the AFL. The AFL give alot of intel on each player to the clubs as well.

Clubs have access to the kids coaches, who can give feedback on how they train, what their dedication is like, what sort of things they do at training etc.

They follow these kids from when they are U14z, not just when they come into the U18s..
So yeah, in short, they have so much more Intel on these kids it isn't funny. Normal people outside of the clubs just arnt in a position to get that info. You can't request a highlights package from the AFL and then get it.

People like Bicks, Knightmare etc do the best they can with a limited amount of resources, and so when they get it right its a far bigger flex than when a club does.

The problem with recruiting a guy like Hewitt is it slows down any sort of development we have because you know Nicks will put them in a position above the younger players.

If you recruit someone like George you recruit them to play them - similar to the three this year. Thats why you have to ensure they comfortably slot into you starting 18 plans when chasing them

Strange that the offer is the same as us with the option of the same year. Not sure if this is true given he couldn't even pronounce Windhager and why wouldn't he be in the Saints best 18 let alone 23.

Looks like his end game is to eventually head home to Port.

You wouldn't bother. We have plenty of B to B+ grade midfield talent. It's the A grader(s)/elite midfielder that we desperately need. Apparently, there's a kid stuck in the SANFL who goes alright.
Dyson Sharp?

Oh him

Probably best chance for us to get him is right now as we can offer the Saints 2 1st rounders before Tasmania enter the competition but will need to offer him $1.5M.
$1.2m feels like unders to me. I would be happy offering $1.5m. The kid is going to be an elite player for a long time.

I’m finding it hard to get my head around where the cap is at. $1.5m seems obscenely high, think I’m still stuck in the days where $800k was band 1.
