The eagles have been guilty of it each time they won the flag.

1993
1995
2007
2019

Those premiership defences were abysmal. Lost games they shouldn't have lost. Blew top 4 chances at home in their final games as well as top 2. 1995 was probably the worst of them all.

Bombers 94
Hawks 2009
Cats 2023

All Missed finals.

Dogs were weak in 2017 but I don't think it was due to being cocky. Just a piss poor effort.

Cant count 1992 Eagles when they come back and win again in 94? Seems unfair

2018 Eagles though. But oh boy. Litres of bathwater was drunk. Fell off an absolute cliff after glugging so hard.

93 they were average though. Even more reason that they won in 94. They were good enough. 93 they finished about 13 and 9 blowing games against Fitzroy and Melbourne even th3 dons they had at the g before salmon kicked the winner. They got ahead of themselves.

It’s almost like having to play top notch footy to win a flag coupled with travelling back and forth from the other side of the country is hard to sustain.

Eagles finished top 4 in 2007 - Cousins hamstring in the QF, lost it by 3 points then drew(lost) the semi the next week. Bit harsh to have them on the list.

Collingwood 1990 drinking up until 2010 but i think things were drying up come 1996
Pies 1990-1999 kind of a never ending celebrations
But methinks Pies 2024 but if they dont win it in 2025 then its enough for a total rebuild and sack everyone at the collingwood club.
I think if pies dont win the flag this year its enough to destroy the club for 10 year thats what i think

Hey!!! I know, lets have a thread on who has played in the most GF'S and lost.?
Oh shit, it's Collingwood.......27 of them.

Yes but shouldn't have lost home games to mediocre teams saints and Lions who didn't play finals. Also blew a 37 point lead and lost to bombers by a point amd in the return game blew a big lead which could have seen them get 2nd. Shojld of had top 2 and two home finals.

Eagles won their first 6 games that year too.

Not us - our premierships were each followed by a GF appearance at worst - hopefully 2025 has the same in store.

From recent memory, I’d have to vote Melbourne 2021 - were outstanding that year, and their side for the most part didn’t change entering the following year.

Went a somewhat shaky 10-0 to open 2022, a season that culminated in a straight sets exit, to a Lions outfit with a major MCG hoodoo.

Not sure about that, they really went down the toilet that year, Cousins went nuts and their era was over before it should have been
Kind-of... I don't think anyone was getting close to us in 2007. The Eagles were a good team in an even era.

But in all seriousness - I'd nominate Geelong 2008. Incredible work throughout the year - 1 loss all year. 10 goal win in the QF. 5 goal win in the PF. Aaaaaand... it all goes to our head in the GF. We play selfish, everything Hawthorn touches turns to gold, the mother of all chokes.

Bit unlucky in 2008. Missed chances then the hawks went nuts in about a 5minuye period in the 3rd which was game over.

Combination of selfish play, lack of respect for opponent and Clarko utilising the rushed behind tactic that forced a rule change because they spammed it during the game.

These days it would have been about 9 free kicks directly in front of goal for deliberate rushed behind.

Jake “Beyblade” Lever having a tanty is an all time highlight. My wife still brings it up all the time (She is a Lions fan)

Blues of 96, Crows of 99, Roos of 2000 I can't say drank their own bath water. They simply weren't good enough. At least the roos both times made the prelims. Not that they ever looked liked serious contenders. Carey tore Geelong to shreds in that 97 qualifier kicking 7 of 11 goals. Roos finished 7th home and away season. Schwass and Archer missing in the prelim wojld have made it a closer game. Saints still would have won though.
