If he chooses Port and there is nothing to be done to change that from our end, would we - dare i say it - put our hand up to assist?

The draft this year looks thin and our 1st round pick is a later one by the looks. Port have a 2nd rounder this year and their F1. Could we trade our 1st this year to them with say one of our 3rd rounders for those picks and we bank on them still being a middling side next year. It would leave us with a 2nd rounder + 2 3rd rounders this year but 2 1sts next year.

What do port get out of it? they get a 1st in this years draft at least and they might be able to work the oracle with their players and ship one or 2 off for more draft capital. Just spitballing to see if we could improve our draft position fore next year in what may be a better draft?

We do not help anyone out. We trade and negotiate to our best interests but facilitating a bumper trade for an opponent is not on IMO.

Port Adelaide paid pick 9 and pick 20 (as a future pick) for Jason Horne-Francis with some later swaps and stuff. They also got Willie Rioli in the deal. This deal was hardly in the ballpark of market value for a pick 1 the previous year.

I'm suggesting something very similar would happen if NWM nominated Port. They'd offer up their 2026 and 2027 first round picks and maybe their 2nd this year, and then manipulate some pick swaps so they meet the pick rules. Which is as "ballpark" value as JHF was.

What would St Kilda do if Port don't offer enough value and NWM demands to leave? He's an uncontracted player. They'd probably use the PSD as an unconvincing threat and let him leave at the 11th hour as what always happens
I would think that is more of an exception than the norm - and even then, Port gave up 8 (not 9) as the main piece and their future first rounder.

I would say NWM with runs on the board is worth more than JHF after his first year - especially considering the commentary surrounding JHF at the time. Balancing this, JHF was in contract.

I wouldn’t be confident any team would trade something around pick 8 for Port’s 2 future firsts. I think NWM knows this as well, hence looking to stay for 2 more years.

Not really no.

You dont have to look too far back in our history to know thats not the case.

With Port keeping Bergman and likely Butters (this year), and not having their first rounder, there is literally nothing Port can offer St Kilda to satisfy them in a trade.

I see him staying for 2 years ala Bergman, then exploring the option again if as we expect, St Kilda still suck.
Geelong for Smith for massive unders just this year.

If he nominates Port, they'll stumble around getting assets and somehow it'll work out. St Kilda will be as stuffed as the Bulldogs.

Difference being the Dogs didn't really want Smith or his baggage.

St Kilda dont want to lose the best player on their list

I don't hate it ...

We could probably then use our picks to move back up when clubs are matching bids.

The picks at the draft were 9 and 20. That's probably less than what St Kilda would get with Port's available futures

It certainly won't be balanced in favor of St Kilda

I think some here are underestimating the moves Port could make. They could trade their future 1st for multiple later 1sts (to meet requirements) and then send only one of them to St Kilda. Or trade a depth player to ensure they have the later picks to meet requirements.
There is no way Saints accept a late 1st rounder for NWM.

I'm suggesting they could split their two future 1sts into three, then send two of them to St Kilda

There's many ways to get the deal done
Probably need to use both future 1sts!

If Butters isn't keen on re-signing beyond next season, Port would be smart to use him in any NWM trade.
Otherwise, free agency compo could end up being a mid first round pick.
Could save themselves a lot of draft collateral.

Or NWM is similar to Rankine and will only request a trade if their club get fair compensation, Port Power had Bergman who had trade capital along with their 2026 1st rounder but they decided to re-sign him so we might be in a better chance then initially thought provided NWM really want to return home to family and isn't as fuss with playing for the Crows as reported by the media.

Rankine didn’t care about Suns getting fair compensation, he only cared that he wasn’t going to be waiting till the end of draft week with words like PSD being mentioned regularly.

2027 1st rounder won't have any value given the draft concession so essentially they can only offer a late 1st rounder (after splitting 2026 1st rounder) and 2027 1st rounder (essentially 2nd rounder), Bergman was the key along with their 2026 1st rounder but they decided to re-sign him.

He's a fine player. Any team would have him, but I don't know that we "need" him.

My main concern would be the effect on team harmony should he be brought in as our highest-paid player.

Players should be all in on us doing what we need to do so we can challenge for a flag. Sydney went alright after Buddy turned up on a monster deal at the time.

We need star power. We have a decent 22 across all positions (playing the oldies notwithstanding) and 10 or so prospects outside of the 22.

Ideally those prospects become players, but if not we still need to make moves. We're thereabouts now - time to go hard again in trade week.

I agree. More role players won't shift us from where we are (which is good, but feels a bit short of serious flag contender) to actual contender.

I'm sure our players want to win a flag. If one player helped make that happen, I doubt anyone would care. Each player has the right to negotiate their own contracts with their manager to ensure they get somewhere need market value, and it's up to the club to keep the ones that will keep us at the top.

NWM in our side on a wing with Dan Curtin on the other wing both hitting up our forwards and racking up quaity possessions between the arcs could be the difference in winning a flag. You trade our 2 x 1sts (25 & 26) and add in a player like a hinge or berry for example (assuming the player involved is happy to move etc). Make it happen if there is a chance

I'd prefer to keep Hinge. Happy to let Berry, Nankervis, Edwards, Ryan type go.

That's ignoring that what North actually got was picks 2, 3 and 40 for JHF and pick 1.

Ports deal hinged on WC trading out 2, 40 and Rioli for 8, 12 and some future picks. Massively undervalued 2. Not sure there's another club going to do that.
