Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

Can’t see him going anywhere, his loyalty to the club and the team is absolutely golden. But if he decided he wanted to go elsewhere I don’t think anyone could blame him really.

Only place he could go to where it would be better and would have the trade capital is the Hawks which I assume would boil the blood of every Essendon fan,

He would be nice for us but won't be in a position of need for what we would need to give up,

Cats and Pies have nothing close to the value required to get him

Can't see him wanting to leave now to go interstate so again leaves the Hawks with Carltons pick decent Cap space and need for an elite mid

It would be two first picks minimum

Couldn't blame him if he asked for a trade. From the outside looking in though, he looks incredibly committed. Admirable.

Falls into the too late to leave now category. Much better to go out as a one club legend, then a Premiership chasing turncoat. Maybe at 26 years old and if the club doesnt want you to stay (ie. Tom Barrass) then sure go for it. At 29 with a club that has you in its highest echelon, just stay it out and retire a legend without a trophy

Wow, so he'll be playing till nearly 40 :thumbsu:
Feasibly could reach 400 by 37.

252 games by seasons end. 7 seasons with a couple of minor niggles gets him 400. Less if he goes plays finals somewhere else.

He seems to have a relatively clean injury history.

If he went to cats or Pies, he would play until 35 like Danger and Pendelbury and would be worth every cent.
Every day over 29 at Essendon he is on borrowed time.

It is kind of funny, he was pushed out of the midfield when in Brownlow form to give others a go.
yet Tsatas got injured and really only had that Adelaide game in there. Caldwell got injured
Durham missed a couple of games as well. Setterfield started outside the 22 then was a crucial cog then got injured. Hobbs never got much opportunity, and when more of a role opened up got injured again like Tsatas. Martin started Getting some midfield minutes then got injured. Parish was injured played a VFL game and missed a few due to fixutre when fit then got innjured after a few AFL matches.
Shiel expected to play out season in VFL after half back experiment failed, becomes a key mid again and Scott running him into ground. And now McGrath is also heading back to be a main mid to help ease the load. Plus Merrett thrown back into midfield and expected to carry it.

On top of that the VFL has gone from having Setterfield/Shiel/Tsatas all in there to none, plus with other injuries barely an AFL listed player - Vissentini, Menzie, Nguyen, Davey, Gerryn, Unwin and Day-Wicks last match.

Harley Reid would have a few mates from his Gippsland days with a number now at the bombers AFL/VFL
Solomon McKay (VFL), Dayten Uerata (VFL), Oscar Smartt (VFL/AFL), Archer Day-Wicks (AFL) all in that 2022 Bendigo side

Noah Long (Bendigo) was also drafted to Eagles with Reid. And Shanahan last year.

This reads as a half baked list analysis mixed with a lament on the injury list rather than a comment on Zach Merrett and his chances of a trade to someclub for somevalue…
