If it is Bobby or Sull as sub I know who I am picking
If we’re getting back ; Checkers, Lippa, Beau, Billy, Bobby and Pendles to play a full game, then I’m sorry to say, I don’t think Sully gets a game. But hey, what do I know.

Will looks to have talent, but it’s time to settle the side down in preparation for massive games to come.

Hill, McCreery and Shultz represent the best small man brigade in the league. Not to mention Jamie.

We need to start hitting the scoreboard hard. Starting this Sunday.

I want them to put the best team on the park for the next 3 - Freo, Richmond, Brisbane - win them all comfortably and then rest as many as they want for the 5 day break before the Hawthorn game. Then it's the best team for the last 2 - supercharged with the addition of JDG.

A report just landed on our fb group

Players began filing onto the ground at the designated start time of 1.50 today.

Conditions – a typical moody Melbourne day where the weather couldn’t be trusted. Early there was mainly cloud with some ominous gun metal puffs which shed their filmy rain. Later the cloud was sliced by rich blue patches and the ground was bathed in radiance, though we were treated to a sun-shower.

Fan turnup: there was a healthy gathering of spectators most of whom were bedecked in their black and white match day garb. The rehydration area was again on the outer side of the ground with a cordoned off area close to it where players could refresh themselves sans fan interruption.

Warm-up – desultory kicking among friends (the likes of the Daici and IQ stuck together etc.) followed by stretching at the John Cain Arena end, working in pairs with the resistance tape - hopping on one legs and holding the position.

Who was missing? Reef, Harrison, Steene, Smit Membrey (probably due to the very recent arrival of son Ted)

Rehab: Howe ran laps, Finn and JDG late in the session worked with a physio after completing many of the drills. Howie completed a lot of the session and then walked rather slowly to the drinks station, consulted a physio and left the ground.

For the record the roll call of black and white though this shouldn’t have much bearing on final selection. At one point for instance Long and Mitchell swapped their tops for the opposite colour.

White clad:

Tew
Dean
Sullivan
Steele
Allan
Markov
Howes
HDM
Cochran
Long
Houston
Ash
WHE
Hill
Parker
Cox
Donning the black:
Josh
IQ
Nick
Crisp
Frampton
Checkers
Jamie
Lippa
Finn
Beau
Moore
Pendles
Perryman
Sidebottom
Schultz
Sidey
McStay
Maynard
Drills: some sprinting involving a select group of players – several expansive handball activities – close in contesting – goalkicking stations which all rotated through – ruckwork specifically with Cameron and Cox related to tap work and ground ball retrievals. Some included black or white clad against yellow or lime green invested with emphasis on competitive contested work and speed of ball movement in a confined area. There was the jumbo bag out for the taller players to hone their jumping and marking skills.

The last segment of the main fare was a whole ground ball movement which was pseudo match simulation with an interesting mix of match-ups.

Random observations of players:

Beau was moving very well in all drills and during the match play. He formed part of the midfield group in discussions and is an added piece of this set-up who can add a healthy dose of pace.

Frampton – was also looking in fine fettle and if Fly is willing to pull the trigger on him would be a welcome replacement for Howe who likely won’t return until after the Richmond match.

Parker – like the way he moves and his skill set – am surprised he hasn’t been afforded more senior opportunities given our need to inject youth and how pedestrian a couple of the replacements for injured players have looked at times

JDG – looks trimmer and looked fine in the drills.

Nick – left the track a little earlier but this isn’t atypical of him this year as he appears to be managing a foot/ankle concern

Hill – was leaping at times as he covered the ground as only Bobby can and tried some of his nifty handballs to teammates. Looked as chipper as one could hope in the circumstances.

Houston is so much the better kick than handballer – surely, we try to get him to fire his rockets more, especially as we know that Josh can feel at home in the middle

Allan was unlucky to be overlooked for the Gold Coast match but would like to see greater intensity at times, even on the training track. Maybe though his laconic movements a la Tommy Langdon are part of his intrinsic makeup.

Was interesting to see the defenders revel in the opportunity to take a reasonable number shots for goal. One can see how some of them possibly miss being part of this limelight. Frampton looked eager, while Moore nailed all his long shots. Maynard enjoys a snap.

Cox looked eager now that he’s back in the frame, could he get a gig this Sunday with the newly minted father of three Membrey resting to allow Mason to be rotated in the ruck against their two-pronged attack on this front, and to complement the returning Checkers and McStay?

With maybe one or more of Mitch, Steele and perhaps Sully making way, will Sidey return to his prime form given that the midfield dynamic appears to have been disrupted over the past few weeks and has coincided in a dip in the form of the #22?

Of course, Fly may decide to retain Membrey and run with McStay as the supporting ruck. One wonders though if Cameron is showing some signs of fatigue which may be allayed by some more expert ruck assistance in the form of Cox.
The session overall was crisp but we will learn more after Thursday’s main session

The traditional loss to the Hawks right before a successful final series. I like it.

So Jordy doing the drills but not the match sim yet.

I’m hoping if all goes well it’s match sim next week then a VFL game on the Richmond weekend?

In for Hawthorn game is my bet, especially as we're likely to have some rested for the Hawks game.

That’ll leave him with very managed minutes through the VFL because we play on the Saturday at both levels of the Brisbane weekend (assuming Kirby is on the money with him returning next weekend).

The frankston locals would love that. We play Frankston up there next weekend

I would play JDG in VFL this week. For a half.
Full game VFL the following week and then afl selection beyond that based on form

It was nice to see Westy out on the track (not doing anything though) out of the moon boot. Hopefully can start running soon.

Hopefully can still play a Few Game before end of the Season

Training - Tuesday July 15

Absent players:

  • Steene
  • Smit
  • Membrey
  • Ryan Inj
  • Reef Inj
  • HH Inj

Rehab:
  • Howe
  • Fin
  • Jordy (did some training)
  • Hill

* Westy made an appearance with a ball in hand. No Moon Boot*

Bobby's return. He participated a little in the drills, but mainly did some running sessions with the rehab group.

Jordy also returned to some sort of training post his concussion protocols. He partook in some drills before doing a running session.

+ Beau trained with the mids when they were doing their line groups
Josh D with the defenders (if anyone was interested)

Pendles and Nick did a few drills, but both left the track early. I wouldn't be too concerned given it's just the first session of the week. Pendles usually has a light/managed first session of the week most times anyway.

Frampton fully trained, making it promising signs he could be available this week. Still would need to get through Thurs and then we'll see.

Overall, it was a solid light session where the fundaments was worked on.
Lots of goal kicking at the start and at the end of training.

That's all so positive. Good stuff.

Thanks Jen!

Really warms the soul seeing the injured players start to return, while hopefully having the opportunity to rest some sore bodies in a few weeks.

McStay is playing defence for the white jumpers. Nick is also playing for the white jumpers.

Cox playing up forward in the black jumper.
