R.I.P Ozzy Osbourne .
Wrecked his mind and body but made some great music. That TV show he was in back in the day was hard to watch.

I’ve never been a composer (had a go as a little kid in case I was a genius - accepted quickly that I really wasn’t) so my new hobby is to do arrangements of music that I like and think would sound cool arranged for different instruments and combinations.

Bit of a steep learning curve actually. I started with this baroque lute piece from 1650 by Gianoncelli which is going to be for piano and violin for my sisters but I’ve missed both birthdays and I’m aiming for Christmas now

Do any of you own a midi keyboard?

I would like to make my composing (ok… arranging) life easier. I have a piano but the software for converting external piano to notation is still a bit primitive, so I’m mostly old-school with manuscript paper and pencil.

I wouldn’t mind trying a midi to convert straight to notation.

****ing heaps of them.

No idea what I'd recommend tho.
Do you know of anywhere in Melbourne where I can try before I buy? Like a piano warehouse or some such? I want 88 note keyboard preferably with weighted action and 3 pedals - but also good for directly notating on whatever software I finally figure out is right. I’d rather play something before buying it

This is outside of my area of expertise unfortunately. I think the vast majority of MIDI keyboards don't really cater to actual musicians, they're more for people who want to bang out simple melodies for their techno and house records (that's me!)

I had an 88 weighted midi keyboard once upon a time, it was outside a high school waiting for the tip. Wife was pretty happy when I put it outside our own house. Big, huge, clunky thing.

Yeah size is an issue. My big need is for it to be played and convert to script. I don’t need a perfect piano because I’ve got one, but do want the full 88 keys and piano size keys (I’m to old to get my muscle memory to convert).

I might make a Saturday project of trying any in store stuff. When is Melbourne playing? I’ll do it then.

If I'm understanding you correctly, this is more of a software issue. MIDI is just numbers, not electrical data, there's no audio to MIDI conversion. The only thing you really need to worry about is if the instruments feels right.

Spot on.

Don’t need to worry about anything other than its capacity to convert to script. My challenge is all the real size piano keyboards are designed for audio and “real” sound. And pricey. **** that. If I want something to sound like the best imitation of a piano, I’ll just play the piano. I’ll scout around and see if a full length keyboard exists for MIDI only. I just want it to write out what I play really. I can just hire somebody to convert hand-written manuscript to professional, but then you have to pay each time for edits.

I’ve just about finished my arrangement for my sisters but they are going to need to read through a bit before it’s finished. I have a feeling there are bits where it may or may not be actually playable without growing extra fingers on each hand. Easy edit setup with keyboard would be perfect.

Here you go fam, best album ever made.
"Ahead of it's time!"

I’ve only listened to 15 minutes and this is great. It’s like a leap from the primarily instrumental albums of the 70s to something different again. I’m going to listen to the whole thing and play it to partner PG. he would just love it.
