The Poo had first round picks in 2024 (Berry) & 2021 (Sinn) so haven't broken the 2-picks-in-4-years rule so should be able to trade their future '26 & '27 first round picks this up coming trade period.

Just that they then cant trade future picks in '26, '27, '28 & '29 trade periods (under that rule) if nothing changes.

Bit of a limp lettuce pumishment.

Sinn wouldn't count?

The rolling 4 year period would look like this, didn't they say that JHF counted as a 1st which is what allowed them to trade the 2025 first?

2025: -
2024: Berry
2023: -
2022: JHF apparently counts
--------------------------------
2021: Sinn

This now means they have to trade into the first round this year if they want to trade the '26 first.

Why not? I don't reckon you can include this year's draft in that 2-in-4 rule since this upcoming trade period happens before the upcoming draft ..... that to me would be illogical.

First of all 21 to 26 covers a 6 year period. It's JHF(2022) and Berry(2024) that currently cover the 4 year period ending 2025. But JHF will expire after this year. So for 2023 to 2026 they will only have Berry(2024) and 2026 first. And No they can't trade 2026 out on a promise to trade one back in next year.

Did Power need permission to trade the first for Lukosius? My memory was it had to be approved, could be wrong.

They didn't in the end because they traded in a first rounder for Houston. They would likely need to do the same again.

AFL CLEARANCE ON FUTURE TRADE

PORT Adelaide would need AFL clearance to be able to part with its future first-round pick after Gold Coast forward Jack Lukosius nominated the Power as his preferred new home.

Under the AFL's future trading rules, clubs have to use two first-round picks at the draft over a rolling four-year period.

However a clause in the rule allows clubs to apply for permission to trade out their picks if they haven't met the two-in-four requirement.

The Power used first-round picks on Lachie Jones in 2020 and Josh Sinn in 2021 but over the past two years has focused on trade acquisitions, without any first-round picks in 2022, 2023 and having already traded out their 2024 first-round pick.

But the League's provision in the rule would likely open the availability to be able to trade the pick, given two of the Power's first-round picks were used in that period for the mega-trade deal that saw them land Jason Horne-Francis in 2022.

Given he was only one year into his career as a No.1 pick, it would be expected the AFL would allow it to count as a first-round draft addition and free up the future pick.

Another option that would allow Port to use its future first-round pick in any deal would be to acquire a first-round selection this year for Dan Houston, who is eyeing a trade to Victoria.

He will get there.
He may, it will just involve player(s) going out of Port.
They did shop Butters around last year, they may be even keener to do so this year before free agency. Alternatively they might have a couple players they think might get 2nd rounders, then they could bundle several 2nd rounders up and trade them on to for example to gold coast who have 3 first rounders but would like multiple 2nd rounders to cover all their academy picks this year.
So complicated but possible, and involving losing players.

Thank you. So Sinn definitely does not count.

Want nothing to do with a bloke who is not interested in playing finals football in a Premiership contending team !

"Avoid at all costs signs " all over this bloke on that point alone !

St Kilda are at least 6/7 years away & Port have to rebuild & will require years of hard draft work !

Let them offer him over $1.2 to $1.5 per year for 5 to 7 years.

Grant Thomas isn't a fan either !

“Avoid at all costs” a bloke that apparently doesn’t want a bar of us? In the Seinfeld routine, it’s us, not him, we’re desperate to get him. And Port have been around the mark the last few years, Pies missed finals last year. Selling a potential contending period with him and their midfield wouldn’t be too hard. What’s your view on the players that came to us off a 15th placed finish and 7 years out of finals? And those prior?

Gee, I hope the price isn't right
He's had a pretty average couple of years now.
I think it would be hard for him to get back to his best.
And his disposal is very ordinary

If. If. If. If he can return to his best form for 2 years it could get us close to a couple of flags for us. Price matters, particularly draft picks, don’t want another Gibbs debacle. I’m not fussed about his average disposal by foot though. If it’s a choice between Crouch’s very accurate but slow disposal going sideways and Clarry bursting through the front of a stoppage and getting the ball quickly to a 1 on 1 forward contest, it’s Clarry by a mile. All we need is the ball to advantage side and let the boys do the rest.

The current version I’m not fussed about. But at a salary dump trade price I’m getting interested.

Both Port, their players and potentially NWM would think they're in a very good position to bounce back next year and be a serious finals contender, I'm sure of it.

It’s not even whether they look like they can bounce back in 2026. He’s making a 10 year decision. It’s pointless factoring in the current season performance of any club. Will he totally different in 5 years time.

A midfield of Rozee, JHF, NWM, Bergman and Butters is absolutely elite.
Granted there’s not much else (Georgiatis and Luko are OK), but that midfield makes them a chance in any game.

Marshall has played some good footy when fit. Their defence is a bit wobbly, but you don’t need elite talent to cobble together something that functions. Our primary group has a pick 11, pick 17, pick 28 and the rest from rookies drafts. And now that our midfield spreads better, they’re a pretty bloody good group.

I’ve heard Draper is basically a done deal to Brisbane. Which I thought very surprising. Seemed like they were late comers to showing interest in him.

It (Draper to Brisbane) has been around for a while, it does make me wonder what we are actually up to because we haven't seemed to move on our offer to Rob, which if Draper was our primary target, you'd think we'd be shoring up our current ruck stocks now.

Could it be Rowan Marshall and Henry Smith?

There's no bad blood between NWM and the Saints, I think he will stay if Port Power can't do the trade.

Seems he’s in the Rankine boat. Pay up yo get it done, but if you can’t, I’m happy to stay a bit longer. Shame, would be nice to get him, even if for 2 years whilst Port get back to having viable picks. We could even put an out clause in his contract.

Who knows, I could be reading things into it that aren't there but either the rumours about Draper to Brisbane or staying are far off and we are getting Draper (which from a logic point of view seems more likely) because if we aren't getting him, you'd think we would have locked up Rob by now. If the difference in the offer is he wants another year, surely we'd just go the trigger clause (stop tapping to the opposition mids, stay out of the F50, that sort of thing) to get the extra year and signature.

Trade him for no more than a second rounder clause?

Port had better start stocking up on 1st round picks because they look to have some absolute top draftees inthe next couple of years via F/S's and NGA's Louis Salopek, Tevita Rodan (F/S) and Zemes Pilot and Dougie Cochrane now seems a done deal as well. All look to be 1st rounders at this stage.

Admit I haven’t taken any interest in this rule, but if it’s 2 in a 4 year rolling period, you sure they can trade both 26 and 27? 2021 would be irrelevant. If they’re trading 2027, surely the relevant years are 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027. They’d need 1 to add to 2024.
