I think everyone knows that, but posters are still allowed to comment on the match ups and their output. What coach who wanted to win the game would play a 3rd gamer on someone as proven as Cameron? We all know Tauru made mistakes thats understandable, it was just a very odd positional move.

Even the better kids take time, have a look at Nas he has been in the system 4 years and although he has been very good he is only now dominating. All kids no matter their abilities take time, thats why unless we can bring in a number of experienced players these kids and the team are going to take years before leap frog our current position.
I think that is my point. 15 minutes in thr game was done. Good move to keep him.on Cameron, would have learnt a hell of a lot.
Saw him do the same to Pou in the final in 23. Greene was killing him but the game was done and he kept Phillipou on Greene for the rest of the game. A great learning experience.
Whole point of 'playing kids'. It's not nuanced, or technical. Develop the kids in games that are unlikely to be won. Play them on experienced quality players. It's what it is all about.

And play Hastie in his place and because he's not surrounded with senior experience his game suffers and he become a Jack Billings or Max King with huge weight of expectation on him. Developing in a side with a strong mature core fast tracks and builds confidence.
It's bizarre world, have been agreeing with Tucker Carlson and Candice Owens on world politics lately and now with Gringo on football.
What a time to be alive.

Hill was fine today. Yes, he had mistakes but so did every other player on the field. He did more good than bad. People just jump on every little thing here does as an excuse to criticise him. It's disproportionate compared to every other player at the club.

Also, he's not on that original contract anymore. No one has a clue what he is being payed on this new one so anyone using that as a reason why they can criticise him more then others needs to move on.
One line summary : It looks bad when a senior player, supposedly a leader squibs contests and gives away goals.

That's not setting the standard.
If that's ok with people then fine, let's hope the young players don't pick that up.

I approach each game with trepidation. Today no different. I want top effort, a pretty clear structure and game plan, and promising signs from the youngsters. Pretty much got it for most of the game. Except for a couple of bad patches, and a few brain fades.

So the start we had was close to my worst fears. Wasn't great and it could have got much worse. But we arrested it, and actually for periods looked pretty good.

In the end it was a result that if I was honest with myself was expected. Just the frustrations of not doing simple things well is my overriding memory. Not necessarily doing the brilliant or flashy things. Just take your easy marks, hit the easy targets and the harder more ambitious things can happen as a result.

The amount of times a simple stuff up meant the ball was swept up their end and a goal. A number of 12 point turnarounds the result. Tear your hair out stuff.

But if they can work on these things and improve skills we will win more often. Sounds simple. Is simple. But clearly requires a lot of work. You keep hearing that is what the top teams do.

I liked lots of moments from the young guys. Boxshall a beauty I reckon. Mixing it with a top class midfield was great. Hall a ripper. Windy and Owens very competitive. Tauru not as impactful, but we know we have a star.

And NAS is really the most extraordinary player. I won’t say the obvious. Trying not to think about it.

Max Hall had 4 (I think) CBAs in the last quarter. So it was good to see him get more opportunity.
Tauru got time in the forward line as another learning.
According to the AFL website, his last quarter:

6 CBA’s
11 disposals
8 kicks
4 score involvements
4 inside 50’s
3 rebound 50’s
3 CP’s
2 clearances (1 centre)
2 free kicks
36 fantasy points (equivalent of 144 if extrapolated out over 4 quarters)

Very promising and great that he got to have that experience. 👍

No from me also.

Alas however, we have only won two games out of our past fourteen matches, with him in the side. Is that correct?

Sadly, we appear to going backwards as a club. From my perspective, Ross the Boss 2 is a different coach than he used to be from 2007 to 2011. I am at times bamboozled by his selections and overall strategy. He seems to be a master of spin & deflection nowadays, has a much more mellow approach, and is reluctant to make a statement at the selection table.

😪

hard to watch us squander opportunies only for it to ping down the other end for a goal. We need to persist with youth so this may continue.

Hill is just hard to watch at the moment. It’s is lack of willingness to compete that stands out. Would be happy for him to see out the year helping kids at Sandy and start him with a clean slate in the preseason given he is contracted.

Henry- we need to persist. It’s about next year for him.

Hastie- persist with the youth who can play the roles suited to them.

Wilson- I think Wilson needs to play in the midfield at Sandy and work on his contest. Ball use needs sharpening as well. I know this isn’t the “persist with youth” line the other are getting but I think that’s what best for him right now.

Travaglia- Play Trav in Wilson’s role. Offers a better contest.

Boxshall- Plays out the year with decent mid rotations.

Taura- stays in the backline and doesn’t get given the big jobs. Leave him as a 3rd tall and give in time over the offseason to develop his 1on1 craft. His confidence is the most importNt thing going I to the offseason.

Re Tauru's confidence.
I remember a very young & inexperienced Zac Dawson in about his fourth game for the hawks, playing on a much more seasoned, big bodied Anthony Rocca. Rocca kicked eight goals.
Dawson would have lost some confidence early on but persisted and ended up being a serviceable, quite reliable player for the most part.
I believe that the Flying Viking will be fine and will most likely have an incredible career. He looks like a highly gifted immensely talented pick up.

Disagree.

It's not just the occasional turnover. He's weak and gets easily beaten.

I've had his back since he came. I accept he'll play the year out and does some good things, but to me, overall he has become a liability.

Exactly how many marking contests did he just stand and watch his opponent mark the ball - he is a liability and should be sent back to the VFL to relearn how to apply himself to contests. Or simply retire and work at the club in a welfare/player support role.

As a club you cant be asking your younger players to commit to contests when you have Hill shirking every physical part of the game.

My mind boggles that you truly believe that and even more wtf, a number agree.

I must be watching a different Brad Hill not wanting to commit to physical contests.

I don’t think many agree, they’re just supporting a player they see as being unfairly made into the whipping boy

Think he’s got you fooled.
I very much doubt the players would agree he’s taken a mellow approach. What you see presented in a press conference - no way that’s him behind closed doors when it’s necessary.

1 win out of the last 10. Obviously never expected to win today, but what a grim season.

Our older players have all dropped off significantly.

We really should win our next four, but I don't think we will. Happy to trade Steele and Marshall.

Lyon will keep going back to the Macrae/Steele combo. I think it is really hurting us. Neither can play other positions.

The moment we have NAS or Hall roll the middle, we immediately look better.

Next year midfield needs to be NAS, Pou, Garcia, Macrae, with Hall and Owens getting bursts through the centre also.
Who do you propose instead of Macrae/Steele ?

I would love to see a meta analysis of this thread, but I’m guessing it’s just gonna be, ‘old senior players cooked plus pile on on Bradley Hill’.

But how about this?
We played too many developing or recovering players.

And I include Hastie who I think has class- and I’m wondering if that is enough, at least now.

Henry has class, but he’s like having half a player on the field.

What is amazing to me, in hindsight, is that we didn’t get thumped by 60.

And the usual pile on for Bradley Hill is typical.

Yes he is a feather and a gazelle, but he’s bloody useful and you’ll find he’ll be top five for metres gained- as usual.
