Amd the only way that changes is by pumping games into them!
Fine and good.
As long as you are happy to accept mounting losses and all that comes with it.
Including, but not limited to,
1) Shi%&ty fixtures (Sunday twilight)
2) media/AFL complex bawling on us for 15 losses in a row
3) Managers low-balling us on deals
4) Low crowds
5) Misery cries and calls for the coach's head
6) AFL telling us to sell home games and play Cairns, New Zealand, Texas

We were far worse 25 years ago, and improved rapidly as the young blokes got games into them. I haven't been pissing and moaning about our current performances, we have the third youngest list in the league, the results go with that territory.......

I don't care about anything else other than winning four points.

I care about winning a flag.

The club is clearly trying to build towards that.

I get that it's been a tough year. The West Coast loss completely did my head in... but losing to Geelong in Geelong while we're building is hardly the end of the world. There was a lot to like.

So right now I really don't care too much about 4 points, as long as the pieces for a tilt at a flag are coming together. I can see signs of that, so I'm good.

Fair enough, so we go back to the question: whats changed?
Hill has been around long enough to know whats what. So what has changed for this drop in form and more alarmingly; basic skill errors?
Is it change in position? possibly - I think his best is on the wing. If this has been taken away from him he may be less confident in teammates positioning and amount of time he has to make a decision which could absolutely result in these turnovers and skill errors.
Is it a change in role? Again possibly. NAS moving to midfield may have forced Hill more D50. Structurally this might make the team lopsided.
There needs to be accountability, especially when a player is on decent coin, has history of better output and has extended their contract.
Put Hill back where he belongs on the wings, not defensive side or 1 on 1 he will never win the contest but if he gets clear running space he'll hurt oppositions.

The back line with Tauru,Hill,Hastie & Byrnes was always going to struggle moving Nas out has created another issue.

Stop with the Matthew Lloyd Ffs he’s not the guru
But agree he needs help so too Higgins while you’re there ball toss of an Auskick kid
Both these guys are gonna cost in big moments with poor kicking for goal it’s the basics
I say Mathew Lloyd because he’s offered goal kicking coaching before, and he’s the best example of a set routine I can think of.

And he was really good at it.

More players should be emulating what he did. Probably the best shot on goal in the last 25 years

We preserved our high draft pick whilst fighting till the end, took it up to em for a short burst, didn't get blown away by a seriously genuine flag contender, and getting more games into more players.

We have to secure the highest pick we can and get the best midfielder available.
Where not short of midfielders we need another 195+ key forward like Riccardi or Cadman type we need to find that player, Aleer will strengthen the back end & he would of been handy yesterday.

I think the first quarter, Lyon must have instructed his players not to get any closer than 5 meters from their opponent. In his presser he more or less saw the problem with Geelong's extra man dropping back into defence, but did nothing about it until the next quarter- too slow to act, and we have lost games partly due to these bad first quarters which require a tactical repair in the second quarter.
We got beaten on the wings, and how their wingers played and we need to sort out the best options there. I thought Wilson started playing well in the third, but then got dragged so Clark could come on and do nothing in the last. Our midfield is slow by hand and foot, and got caught out too many times. Boxshall though is encouraging- good hands and works ok in the close contest.
I would play that team again next week with the exception of Clark who could go out for Dow

I think Tauru was a liability today. And he was last week too. I don't care about anything else other than winning four points. I accept that you must play talent, and yes, the scales change towards the end of a(nother) poor season. But if I were a Geelong forward (seasoned old bastards they are) , I would be plenty happy to see the likes of Tauru and Hastie listed.
Respectfully disagree with the sentiment - I’m more interested in a premiership than four points and to get one of those it would be good sense to have a core group of kids coming through and learning together against good teams.

Geelong, as good as they are (so consistent that basically everyone believes they’ve abused the salary cap in some way or another), have probably won the most 4 points out of any team in the last decade, they’re always finishing top 4 yada yada. They’d be the envy of a lot of clubs, but they’ve only won 1 flag in that time despite having a genuine shot at it most years (ignoring 07,09,11 great for them but that’s basically another era, one where we were also a top calibre team) and it was against a shite bedwetting Sydney side. They’ve been the best performed club by 4 points standards, but I’d prefer to be Richmond with 3 flags in the same time. I guess it’s really a moot point, as from a saints perspective we’d probably be over the moon with one top 4 finish… but if you dare to dream for more it starts with games like yesterday - both if you want to be like a Geelong or a Richmond.

Aside from all that, who would you have rather played than Tauru?

Effort - excellent

Execution - appalling

Swarm the contest - win the contest - hack it fwd - lose it in a turnover.
I really don't want to hear about pressure and effort anymore. That's a non negotiable. Last 4-5 weeks we've contested well, we lack polish and that results in lots of turnover losing structure, etc. Really need to sort our skills out. Some of it is cohesion tho and that will get better as we play more games together

And for a team that has poor skills you would think we would do more training to try and improve , Not less

This forum is so bi polar.

Play the kids - the kids are making too many mistakes. Why play them on good players?

I am only interested in winning - why did we win those games at the back end of the season, we got a worse pick.

Tauru is better than Battle - Tauru is a liability ( after 5 games).

As someone that comes to this forum to either bathe in the negativity after a loss or to seek hope with unrealistic trade rumours, I think this forum (or st kilda fans in general) should be studied. I’m tempted to let Chat GPT have a go at running a positive and negative commentator list and then seeing how it changes month to month and year to year.

I can tell how close I am to throwing out my paraphernalia when Gringo has begun his annual dip into pessimism and I know I’m Bolte bound when you’re neg too Joff.

Dr Spaceman is this forums anchor being, we lose him and it’s all over.

5 tackles inside 50 is totally unacceptable. Some people only want to bang on about system and ball use but pressure, especially in your forward 50, is a fundamental that needs to be a focus.

System plays a part in tackling numbers too.

Its not all just effort related.

There is a reason for example why Collingwood are the least pressured / tackled team in the AFL.

Who do you propose instead of Macrae/Steele ?
Trade Steele at the end of the year. Rest 1 of them on occasion. Try Steele forward for the remainder of the year. Heaps of options.

We always talk of needing elite mids. NAS will be one. Hall could be very good. Pou we haven't had the opportunity to see. Owens has been given no opportunity. My point is we already have the potential to have an elite midfield.

Playing Macrae and Steele every week makes it too hard to see different combos because you can't put them anywhere else.

If we go into next year with Steele and Macrae both playing AND we have a fit Pou, Hall, Garcia, Owens and NAS on the list I will be super disappointed.

There are not enough mid minutes to go around.

Lyon struggles to make bold calls. Will take forever for him to drop one of Macrae or Steele.

There is every chance we are watching Steele and Macrae every week next year, whilst Pou and NAS get little bursts of mid time.

Forget about seeing Owens in there, despite being the best contested player on a list by some margin.

Not taking Whitlock last year was a massive mistake. Exactly the type of player we need.

He is really starting to dominate games in the SANFL now if the Port board is to be believed.

We are now targeting Aleer which I agree with, but perhaps indicates we are not confident Barrat is the key position defender we need.

We seem to be way too comfortable relying on Max King to hold up the entire forward line.

Watching Adelaide's forward line, it's a thing of beauty. 3 big power forwards, it's unstoppable.

Edit: Retain NAS play him as a mid, get Pou healthy, Garcia takes a step, give Hall some midfield minutes. There is your elite midfield in the making. Now go and find a forward prospect so we are not talking about Max King incessently the next 5 years.

This is a crazy take, Jezza been one of the best forwards for a decade, what an education for Tauru
If Nas leaves the most disappointing thing is that we will not be able to watch him play live 12 times a year.
Watching him do that for someone else for the next 12 years would be heartbreaking.

I certainly did not exclude myself from the bi polarism :D

Next year rotate Pou and Steele on a split between forward and midfield.

We can't carry dump kick artists. Macrae, Steele, Clark & even Windhager were far too panicky with clearance with Geelong setup behind the ball.

It makes no sense stacking the stoppage to win clearance, but then dump kicking to 1v3, turning the footy over and then not locating an opponent on transition.

I can cop losing, but I think for far too long we weren't even playing the right way to complement the strategy. The clearances numbers are so skewed because we have numbers around the ball. The quality (other than Nas' hit up to Sharman...my god) was miles apart.

I think you might have misunderstood my post.
System does play a part in tackling numbers but that system also requires effort to execute.
The two parts are related. Collingwood had 35 inside 50 tackles on the weekend. That's not all system based. It requires effort to do those sort of numbers. Yes, Collingwood lost but that was from their poor I50 efficiency.

Settle Joff, people are just sick of losing. The big picture is we are in a rebuild playing kids, but come game day everyone wants the team to win! Their posts are just a reflection of that and after so many bloody rebuilds we should be attuned to those reactions.
