Review R19: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Gold Coast SUNS

My English teacher at school loved Hemingway because of his concise writing, never wasting a word

"Economy of prose" was the phrase she used

Derm is the opposite

Gluttony of drivel
One thing I'm noticing more and more often with AFL commentators, and Derm is one of the worst, is how they are so infatuated with telling us how good players are.

We know the players are good. They're playing the top level of the game. Yet so often every game they feel the need to go super slow mo and glaze over players for doing a good kick.

"People watching at home won't understaaaaand just how hard that kick was and he's executed it perfectly. That is an amaaaaaazingly difficult kick to pull off."
"And he meant it too!"
"He absolutely meant it!"

It's like they're trying to make the players out to be super heroes. These guys are getting 6 or 7 figures to do this as a job. You'd hope a few of them are pretty good at it. It doesn't need to be rammed down our throats.

I was worried about Peatling's shoulder. Looked quite an awkward one last week. Got strapped up and played on but you never know how these things settle down.

Needn't have worried. He was immense yesterday. Crashed in as per usual, no strapping

I was also surprised at the Mac Andrew double goal - until you see the replay and it's a real proper jumper punch to the face.

Not much impact, so nothing tribunaly to see, but clearly a free kick.

Nice.

Andrew is a hot headed idiot, all he did yesterday was show the league how easy it is to get him rattled

What was ugly..... booing Mac Andrew. Yep he's a flog, and yep he's so easy to wind up that he makes JHF and Reid look like church mice, but it was needless.
Given that he was such a flog the previous encounter, maybe he should expect a bit of that to start with...

But by the end of the game it started to fade out (as it should). There's no point lingering on with this kind of stuff for no good reason, it's just nasty.

Bigger issue was just us playing 3 talls in wet/slippery style conditions that aren't conducive to that I'd say. Tex has been a bit all or nothing in his matches this year, some really good moments & some shockers. I still think the 3 talls is very viable though I think if we get wet finals a hard call has to be made for those.
And we now sit nicely set up for a top 2 spot, so yes the 3 talls is obviously viable. Only a fool would think it's not.

Nicks made an interesting observation during the week (!) in an interview talking about our good form, finals prospects etc.

He said that Alex Neal-Bullen has been quick to remind everyone that we haven't done anything yet.

Pretty blunt and very true. Important to keep feet on the ground. Young teams who haven't experienced success can get swept up in a few wins (eg Port Power's annual bathwater overdose). One of the reasons ANB's been a good pick up

Its possible that couldve happened, because theres no way he ran too far.
What I find silly is that everyone wants to see highlights. Umpires tend to turn a blind eye to high contact or in the back frees if a player takes a screamer, or even attempts one.

Ignores the hand over the shoulder and everyone is okay with that, because we all want to see high marks. An absolute highlight of the game

Rankine on the burst, taking on tacklers left and right... who doesn't want to see that?

For some reason they don't err on the side of excitement with those run-too-far decisions, instead quick to apply their wet blanket.

The Good:

ANB clear best on ground. Sometimes the stats say it all, in this case it's enough.

Before the game I said that ROB had to stop being Witts bitch - mission accomplished, by basically bodying into him and stopping him jumping. While it was more of a draw situation, it stopped their mids getting an armchair ride.

Our defense was immense, particularly in the first half. Our positioning was spot on, and we read the Suns entries virtually every single time to cut it off - chalk that one up to the coaches for noticing just how predictable they are in pushing through the middle.

Berry continues to be underrated, and was having an excellent game before coming off for the concussion protocol - it was good to see he passed and was back out there to finish the game.

The Bad:

The umpiring was ridiculously inconsistent - the worst it's ever been across the whole weekend, and this game was an exclamation mark on the end of it. It's time the AFL fessed up that the four umpire policy is a complete failure and correct it.

Umpire must have missed the 2nd bounce.
At the ground we all wondered WTF?, and came to the same conclusion.

Possibly lost it by another player blocking his view, or the Rankine's crazy of direction while flat-out. Still shouldn't have happened though.

The bar for being “good” is lower than it used to be.

So it’s more noticeable when someone is “good”.

He was so ill the decision to play only came 5 minutes before the game started.

He did look white as a ghost and no like himself

That he still scored 2 goals and outperformed Mac Andrew is a testament to his quality

So do we.
I was more talking about ever, in their existence. We have 2 flags at least
But sure the current team hasnt achieved anything. We also have less attitude than GC

Well, he had an entire team going at him for a whole half, and 40k people booing him, that's probably more heat than he will get in any other game, maybe for the rest of his career

Sometimes think that since Izak got pinged for running to far against Collingwood (and the publicity it received), umpires seem more likely to ping him if they think he's pushing the boundaries

In the same, but opposite way Buddy seemed to get away with running 25 on a few occasions. The media joked about and made excuses, and then he just continued getting away with it

I know this isn't a rational argument

I thought Berry, Peatling and Soligo were excellent, it's so hard playing against Rowell and Anderson but I feel they all limited the two star sun's efficiency well, while also being damaging the other way.

I thought Berry's tackling was a massive highlight and such a strength for us. Is suprisingly quicker than I thought to.

And they’re way too quick to call it at the best of times.

They should err on the plus side of 15 metres.
They're as good at judging distance run as they are at judging 15m kicks
