NFL coming to the MCG in September 2026 - clash with AFL finals?

The NFL may be legally prohibited from broadcasting a game in the US on Saturday
The rule is that they aren't able to schedule a game on a Saturday where there is a college or high school football game being played within 75 miles of the stadium where the NFL game is being played. So they should be OK.

You would think the bye week would be perfect. Maybe schedule minimum games at the G the last round.

I may be wrong (feel free to correct any NFL fans) but from my understanding Friday nights is essentially college football night in the states. They may not want to go against it
The NFL does not play Friday night football. There is a Thursday games each week and a Saturday game which can be afternoon or evening. Plus Monday night but most games are Sundays.

The MCG NFL game is round 1 of their season. Assuming it is not their very first game of their season (unlikely), it could be a Saturday night game (NY time). So 8.20pm there which is 10.20am Sunday here at that time of year by my reckoning. It certainly won’t be any later.
Otherwise if it is Sunday or Monday game it will be a weekday morning here.

So, the most likely slot is Sunday morning.

The other challenge is the grass and line markings. The NFL grass height is 18/19mm and AFL is 27/28mm. Not sure if mowing after the AFL finals will help to remove line markings.

The AFL could play MCG finals Wed/Th/Fri to allow Saturday to get the ground ready.

Or, play it during our bye week and push the GF into October.

Fox reporting that the NFL MCG game will be held on Friday September 11 in the morning (Thursday night football in the US) - 2nd week of the AFL finals which would screw up that weekend MCG games if there are any
Just can't believe the level of compromise the AFL have leant that sport in the middle of finals.

The season opener is usually on Thursday after Labor Day which is September 10 US time so the game should be on Saturday morning (September 12) and beamed live to the US on Friday, September 11 in prime-time with a mid-morning kickoff

What’s wrong with it? There is Marvel you know. They would just move the Melb game to Saturday if they wanted to.

Can’t wait for it coming to Australia

Playing in the middle of Finals footy. Should be in October when it is footy-free

They are never going to travel that late in the NFL year. It literally affects ONE day, the Friday that’s it

why are we potentially compromising the finals series for this seppo crap

Because it’s insanely popular that’s why and it will be an event. We aren’t compromising the finals series anyway it will make zero difference. Oh no a side has a whole one day less recovery…so be it you have a week before the finals start!

So what you are saying is it comprimises the AFL finals. All Melbourne finals are normally played at the MCG.

It doesn’t it will be available Saturday. It’s a grand total of ONE day

Who cares if you play one day later

They did last season for opening week in Brazil.

The NFL season starts the first weekend after the 1st Monday of September

In 2026 the 1st Monday is the 7th

in 2025 the 1st Monday was the 1st allowing the NFL to play a week earlier

The NFL is prohibited by law from broadcasting a game from the 2nd Friday in September until the 2nd Saturday in December

which means in 2026 they can't broadcast on a Friday or Saturday on that first weekend of matches (ie. play in Australia on a Saturday or Sunday)
