Had something on last night so watched the replay and it is one of the most enjoyable nights of VFL footy ive watched. Crowd was rollocking, commentary was about the football and not fan fare, Triple M style overblown shit. The football itself was high scoring led by a bunch of very, very good VFL players.

With 5,500+ through the gates, it's a massive tick for VFL football. Frankston now % out of the top 4, who'd have thought that 6 months ago. A winnable match against Carlton is set to be another bumper game

Great stuff
Take note though the commentators are in the 7 studio every week

I'm not seeing McCartney's gameplan as negative or overly defensive. The big things holding us back from higher scores are poor goalkicking and poor forward 50 entries. The poor forward 50 entries are partly a result of not picking out targets well enough and partly a result of poor forward craft, with forwards not leading and the mids as a result not having much to kick to. We definitely do need to get a couple of good key forwards in the offseason to strengthen the forward lines, but we would be putting up higher scores if we were taking our chances better.

Out of the 15 games we've played so far, we've had more inside 50s than the opposition in 10 of them. The five exceptions are v. Frankston in round 2, v. Southport in round 7, v. Geelong in Round 8, v. North Melbourne in round 12, and v. Gold Coast in round 17. And of those 5 games where we had fewer inside 50s, we still had equal or more scoring shots than the opposition in 3 of them: we had more scoring shots against Geelong and North Melbourne, and against Southport we had the same number of scoring shots as they did (though I do recall Southport having at least one really shocking kick out on the full that should have scored).

We've also had more scoring shots than the opposition in 7 games and an equal number of scoring shots in 2 games, leaving 6 in which we've had fewer scoring shots. This can be a somewhat misleading stat since it can sometimes be easier to generate another scoring shot after a behind by locking it inside forward 50 than after a goal when everything resets, but the number of inside 50s we've had suggests that getting the ball forward is not in and of itself the problem.

Also, our big problem with inside 50s is not shallow entries but entries where we aren't able to hit a target (which is partly on the kickers and partly on the forwards who too often aren't providing good options). This is definitely a problem that we have to fix but not a problem caused by a negative gameplan.

The impression I get from McCartney's 1/4 and 3/4 time addresses is also not of a negative gameplan; he certainly emphasises the contest but also seems to want fast ball movement. I recall a couple of addresses in which he told the players to drive the ball forward and not be afraid of possibly turning it over. And that approach seems to me to be reflected in how they play in general. Granted, one might question whether they shouldn't be doing more to avoid turning it over, but although some turnovers result from overpossessing the ball while not moving it forward, that seems to be the opposite of what McCartney wants. And a lot of the turnover problem does come from driving it forward to nothing in particular or even to the advantage of opposition defenders as we saw in the Frankston game a couple weeks ago where Frankston's defenders were consistently taking front position and reading the ball better than our forwards. And while that is very much a problem, it's a different problem from a negative game style.

so...who makes the final 10?
1. Boh Hill (SthPort, Foots, Casey)
2. Footscray (GWS, BHH, Carl)
3. Southport (BHH, Wer, N.M)
4. GWS (Foots, GCS)
5. Frankston (Carl, N.M, Bris)
6. Brisbane (Cob, Casey, Frank)
7. Collingwood (Willy, P.M)
8. Richmond (GCS, Sandy, Willy)
9. Casey (Bris, BHH)
10. Williamstown (Coll, Rich)
11. Coburg (Bris, PM, Rich)
12. Nth Melbourne (Sandy, Frank,

Southport v Box Hill (this week at Southport) is going to determine top spot imho.
Frankston v Brisbane on the last Sunday is likely to decide who finishes 5th and home final.
Willy is firmly on the watch list, I dont think the next two (Coburg or Nth) are going to win enough games. Nth need to win both which could happen but unlikely. Coburg likely need to win 2/3 to make it.

Coburg have a bye in the last round
How can Richmond play both them and Williamstown?😂

North have Southport last. As good as southport are, its winnable especially if Sydney can beat them up there

so...who makes the final 10?
4 teams will fight it out for 9th & 10th.
Casey, Willy, Coburg and North.
Casey need one more win, if Coburg win their 2 games and Willy only win 1, burgers will sneak in on%. Coburg shot themselves in the foot by losing to Werribee. North dropped 2 games they could of won against swans and cats.

Casey have Brisbane in Brisbane and Box Hill at home. You'd think they'll at least win one.

I don't know how Coburg lost that to Werribee. Both losses to Frankston should have been wins too.

Its still doable for north.
At least Williamstown have two games at home, but the loss v the Ants may come back to haunt em..

If Collingwood lose both of their games then they may miss

Jackson Voss MUST be drafted. St.Kilda can whinge all they want but the kid deserves a shot.

Tom Blamires very good and shooting up my Fothergil-Round medal rankings, Taine Barlow probably played the game of his life, Jones, Gown, Johnson and Ellison will cause some troubles if Frankston can get some better service

Ecstatic for Frankston, enjoy it again AussieNick1999
Blamires big numbers on the weekend

"What's his one wood?"
endurance

strong enough inside>outside game but just runs and runs and runs
