Review R20: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Port: Like taking candy from a baby

Massive win, having been there it was staggering to see the difference in the two sides, they are so far apart it is like the Grand Canyon. Ports bottom 6 are woeful, Adelaide's bottom 6 are worthy in any team in the comp. Adelaide play with system, Port show no connection with each other, when coming out of defence, moving the ball, they are just putrid all round. I expected a good and fierce contest, Port simply gave up and showed no fight. I am hoping the Crows can now beat Hawthorn, I will be going to see just how they match up on each other, should be a great game.

Edit: Mark Keane has been a revelation, I cannot believe his improvement, number one interceptor in the comp, but more importantly, no longer shaky and indecisive.

I was at the game and I was pencilling Thilthorpe in for the medal before half time,he was absolutely immense in that first half when the win was set up. Spent a lot of the final quarter on the bench with the cue in the rack.

Soligo was great too, but did most of his best work in the second half when the game was already out of Port's reach.

You could absolutely argue that Soligo may have had a better game overall than Thilthorpe, but in terms of their influence on the result when the game was won, it was Thilthorpe for me.
Thilthorpe had 6 clearances in the first half - and I think 7 score involvements. Absolute beast. Soligo had a terrific game but if it wasn’t for his awesome last quarter he wouldn’t have been a discussion - and by then game was well over

To be fair I think you are right and fans turned on Wesley immediately

A bit like how I turned against Rozee when he was drafted to Port
Fans absolutely hated the little shit. He seemingly existed only to **** up something, putting the Enterprise and all on board into serious peril, only to save the day. Needless to say, the Chrome Dome Gnome always gave him credit for saving the day, completely ignoring that it was Wesley's blunder which had endangered the ship in the first place.

If you want evidence of how Wesley was received at the time (and that the hatred is not a hindsight thing), I recommend reading the Star Trek: The Next Cliche paradody/reviews, which were written by Phil Kernick immediately after watching the shows when they screened on Ch9. Phil was a student at Adelaide Uni around the same time as me, and we crossed paths occasionally.

He also reviewed some episodes from DS9 and Voyager (which he hated - much like myself).

You can read Star Trek: The Next Cliche here: https://www.rotfl.com.au/trekker/

I reckon Keane has played basically the same since he debuted for us (aside from the Amartey game) except for some reason people thought he was crap to begin with when he wasn't
Nah he was shit early.. showed glimpses of talent but always had a brain fade. He has improved massively. Still has the odd screw up but they are now rare. Also he appears to understand his role in the team and how to work in the defensive system. Much credit should go to the defensive coach.

How did people TT winning the Showdown Medal look on TV? Everyone around me at the game thought Soligo was absolutely stiff to miss out.
I thought it was a 50/50 decision, between TT and Soligo. I wasn't surprised and not disappointed that TT won, but I would have been equally unsurprised and undisappointed if Soligo had won.

TT and Soligo were clearly the two dominant players on the ground, albeit playing completely different roles which made it hard to compare their performances on an equal basis.

Good: What an incredible performance by the whole team. Now that guys like Murphy are out of the team we don't have any passengers. Sure guys like Cook and Taylor don't get a heap of the ball, but when they do it's always a quality possession.

I was actually a little concerned about this game with the weather forecast thinking it would even up the teams. I couldn't have been more wrong. Port showed absolutely no ticker at all last night, bar 5min in the first quarter. It was very un-Showdown like from them.

Filthy, he just continues to amaze me with his skills. His cleanliness with the ground ball for such a big bloke is unheard of, even in the horrid conditions last night.

I was pleased to see that in the last quarter that we had Curtin, Taylor and Pedlar attending centre bounces, and Soligo got even better when he was moved up forward. We are getting quite the flexibility in our team.

And to think we have Rachelle to come back!

Ugly (for Port): They still think they have a good list and a new coach will turn them around. That was the most insipid performance I've seen from them in a very long time, especially in a showdown. May it continue for many years!

I was hoping to see Ken smiling in the box in the last quarter just to throw the Port supporters into an absolute frenzy!
They have footage of him and Chad Cornes chatting and smiling.

And like that, it’s mathematically impossible for Port to make finals. At least they can use a really good first round pick to properly start their rebuild…… suns be like

No it isnt.

I mean, it takes 4 wins, 5 Gold Coast Losses, and at least 3 Bulldogs losses. While making up the percentage gap.

But it isn't impossible just yet.

His brain fades to begin with were overblown and not much different today. He still concedes silly frees and just recently he dropped a piss easy uncontested mark.

I think people are more accepting of the errors now we're winning and focused too much on them while we were losing

Was at the game, avoided getting rained on by about a row or two. Could not believe how well we played in the rain. I swear someone gave our players a reverse lobotomy over summer. We were playing smart wet weather footy. Kicking off the ground, kicking chest high and taking chest marks. We were just so impressive. If we didn't spray the first quarter kicks at goal a 100+ margin would've been child's play.

How did people TT winning the Showdown Medal look on TV? Everyone around me at the game thought Soligo was absolutely stiff to miss out.

Also I know we have so much bigger fish to fry, but **** me, being ahead in the ledger never gets old. We've spent so much of our lives behind in the ledger (a quick look at the wiki suggests we went 17 years without going ahead). So to be 2 ahead is just such a good feeling, meaning that even if we implode next year and lose both we still can't go behind unless they also somehow beat us in a final. And judging on current form, that seems... unlikely.
After the game , at the game, I thought Sog was robbed.

Live he was in everything and two cheap goals late.

But watching the replay, the early work Thilthorpe did set the win up. Second quarter was massive.

Refreshing to see the award go to the impact player and not the stat leader.

I was there going

Thilthorpe - 3 goals, one of the highest clearance players on the ground
Soligo - best statistically ultimately
Milera - Great, and made it look dry (So did Laird by the way - But he wasn't as good as Milera)

I wouldn't have been surprised if any of them won it.

I probably go in the above order, because some of Soligo's stats were junk time. Thilthorpe did alot when the game was still in the balance.

Definitely !

Of course he has improved but he was always v good for a player of < 20 games

Remember when he came in and flogged Dixon

He’s had one v poor game ever v Amartey

Are you able to provide a few examples of what he said? Thanks🙏
I really couldn't do it justice trying to paraphrase.

Best to describe it - not a cliché in sight. Thoughtful insight into preparation for end of season games and upcoming finals. His long time love for the Crows. His role in mentoring the younger players even though he didn't mention 'mentoring' and it seemed it's something he's taken upon himself and not an official expectation of the club. I really can't do it justice.

Reckon you'd be able to listed on the FiveAA App though.

Have to say, Laird was pretty damn good today as well. 24 touches, of which 13 were intercept possessions. Lead intercept player on the ground. Used it pretty nicely too, was the equal second-best disposal efficiency player on the ground (behind Taylor who went at 100% for his 8 touches).

Meanwhile, is there anything to make of Murray only managing 4 touches, no marks, and no tackles? I know the ball didn't get down there much, but Keane for example had 16 touches, 1 mark, 3 tackles. Worrell with 19 touches, 2 marks, 3 tackles.
I think Murray was on Lukosius?

That'd probably explain it, Port didn't kick it anywhere near him.

Won’t be fun and games when he takes Burgoyne’s place in their starting 22.
Yep on the Port board they’re lamenting the lack of impact of their father son players like Burgoyne and Mead

Had to feel sorry for Shaun Burgoyne as a commentator last night, having to watch that crap from his old club

Good to see Laird and Milera getting some credit on this board. A key part of the success of our defence. Read the play so well, clean on picking ground ball and tidy disposal.
Laird just puts his body in wherever needed - has really bought into the role change
Milera one of the hardest players in the game to tackle and stop

Plenty calling for their heads in the first half of the year - both have been very good

Maybe he gets a bit lippy @ the Umps? They have long memories ...
That'd explain alot
Watching Ammos I see that Ned McHenry gets lippy at umps.
Would explain why he had a -31 Free Kick ledger in his time in the AFL
