Review R20: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Port: Like taking candy from a baby

I think Murray was on Lukosius?

That'd probably explain it, Port didn't kick it anywhere near him.

Have to say, Laird was pretty damn good today as well. 24 touches, of which 13 were intercept possessions. Lead intercept player on the ground. Used it pretty nicely too, was the equal second-best disposal efficiency player on the ground (behind Taylor who went at 100% for his 8 touches).

Meanwhile, is there anything to make of Murray only managing 4 touches, no marks, and no tackles? I know the ball didn't get down there much, but Keane for example had 16 touches, 1 mark, 3 tackles. Worrell with 19 touches, 2 marks, 3 tackles.
If the oppo key forwards aren’t kicking goals then it really doesn’t matter if one of our key defenders doesn’t get much of it. Like when Butts was playing - I think it’s necessary to have one key defender whose complete focus is to shut down the best forward from the other team

Isn't it nice having some genuinely elite talents who you just know love smashing Port and who continuously turn up for it in Thilthorpe and Rankine?

You can just tell it means something extra to them.

Nice to have locals. Can't wait to add Draper to the mix.

Muzz usually took the deapest forward. I usually saw him on Georgiades.

Saw Worrell on Lukosius... but must admit wasnt watching as closely as usual give ball wasnt down there much.

I was at the game and I was pencilling Thilthorpe in for the medal before half time,he was absolutely immense in that first half when the win was set up. Spent a lot of the final quarter on the bench with the cue in the rack.

Soligo was great too, but did most of his best work in the second half when the game was already out of Port's reach.

You could absolutely argue that Soligo may have had a better game overall than Thilthorpe, but in terms of their influence on the result when the game was won, it was Thilthorpe for me.
Voters needed to square Riley up for the medal they stole from him earlier this year.

Would have been easy, and somewhat justified to go easy in the last quarter.

Close to 50 points up, could have played out time.

A big tick for Nicks is that we kept pressing.

Percentage might be important.

But I wonder if that was done to stick the knife into Port further. Especially being Ken's last Showdown.

Think we saw a ruthless element in our coaches box last night.

I thought it was a 50/50 decision, between TT and Soligo. I wasn't surprised and not disappointed that TT won, but I would have been equally unsurprised and undisappointed if Soligo had won.

TT and Soligo were clearly the two dominant players on the ground, albeit playing completely different roles which made it hard to compare their performances on an equal basis.
Imo Thilthorpe was the better player when needed.

Soligo cashed in the last quarter when the game was already over.

Yeah their list is a complete mess.

Kane Cornes can't even polish that turd and has admitted that they're most likely in for a tough few years.

They're traded away so many first rounders over the last few years that it's left a huge talent hole in their list.

It's going to be a long few years for them especially if they continue trading away first round picks.
As much as NWM would be a great pick up for them, it would also mean they having to give up even more first rounders. The position their list is in, they just need as many first rounders as they can get. Adding one gun in NWM will just make the problem worse.

Good: seeing Wayne Milera straight lining the ball in tough conditions

Just on Cook - I loved his positioning.

There were a couple of times in the 1st quarter while he was on the wing, he pushed hard to be an outlet option for our defenders. once it got to him, and the other time Keane kept it and went back down the members side.

Sure, he only got 1 touch in those couple of moments, but the work ethic, and positioning really stood out to me.

Good to see Laird and Milera getting some credit on this board. A key part of the success of our defence. Read the play so well, clean on picking ground ball and tidy disposal.
Laird just puts his body in wherever needed - has really bought into the role change
Milera one of the hardest players in the game to tackle and stop

Plenty calling for their heads in the first half of the year - both have been very good
Milera's marking one on one has improved out of sight this year... to go with his running game.

Laird just gets in the right spots & knows how to find the ball.

I reckon Keane has played basically the same since he debuted for us (aside from the Amartey game) except for some reason people thought he was crap to begin with when he wasn't
Have always been hot on Keane after seeing some videos of him at Collingwood.
He had some rough edges as you'd expect from someone young and still new to the game, but he's ironing them out pretty quickly and has become a lynchpin in defence.

I think he learned a lot from the Amartey bath.

Yes, Thilthorpe was the standout player on ground when the match was still a live contest.

I've been a Keane fan from the start, but even so I can acknowledge that he has taken his game to another level this year.

He's still doing what he was doing before, just better.

I think just to inflict mental scars on their younger blokes - and enjoy the bullying of Butters and Rozee

Medal Votes:

15 Riley Thilthorpe

9 Jake Soligo

3 Jordan Dawson

2 Zak Butters

1 James Peatling

Sarah Black from the AFL website gave Butters 2 votes which clearly indicates that she didn't watch the game, and just looked at the stat-sheet.

Can I just note that the score review where the commentators thought it pin-balled back and forth between the smother and the boot was not real - was optical illusion from that one angle right? There was one angle that showed the ball go from boot to smother then continue over the goal-line - it was clear in my opinion.

Indeed. He is a classic winger, moving from the defensive square to the attacking one, easily. Apart from his excellent goal-assist kicking, he also displayed a fierce tackling desire last night that was not so noticeable in his previous games.
