It's true. But if we had drafted better in that period we probably wouldn't have had access to Curtin and Draper.

We played the long game of being shitter for longer.
Maybe so but it's not like the crows having 5 or 6 years in a row of no finals. It's usually a 2 or 3 periods of plug and play rebuilds like 1994-6, 2000-01, 2010-11 and 2013-4 that I am used to seeing

I think the competition has changed that more clubs will go through this.
Yeah I agree. 18 sides. 8 finals spots and 10 sides don't make finals.

Make it 19 when Tassie comes in and 20 when another side rocks up.

All non Victorian sides have either gone through or going through a process of spending 5 seasons in a row of no finals .

Port Adelaide went 2008-12 being bad.

Dockers spent 2016-2021 not playing finals. Eagles never spent no more than 3 seasons not making finals. Eagles finished 9th in 2021 then feel to bottom 4 since 2022. I can't see them make finals in 2025

Crows haven't made finals since 2017 grand final. They were not terrible in 2018-19 but fell badly in 2020.

Yep
1991-1993 Made Finals in 1993
1994 - 1996 - 0 Finals
1997-1998 - Premierships
1999-200 - 0 Finals
2001-2003 - Made finals each year under Ayres and one prelim.
2004 - Missed Finals
2005-2009 - Made finals each year but no grand final. Two Prelims
2010-2011 - Missed finals
2012 - Made Prelim
2013-2014 - missed Finals
2015 - 2016 Made finals each year
2017 - Grand Final Loss
2018-2024 - No Finals

Its been way too long now. This full re-build was a mistake. We just needed to recruit and trade well which weve done the last 3 years

I am aware of the crows finals history and years they didn't make finals.

Gary Ayres finals era was underrated. Always wanted crows to beat magpies in that 2002 preliminary final. That means a Brisbane vs crows grand finals in 2002.

2005-09 was solid just needed a gun kpf to win that 2006 flag.

Not all rebuilds are gonna be perfect.

Considering the full rebuild path netted us a pretty enticing core moving forward, headed by a key forward who is putting in a claim for being the best player in the league, it's hard to say it was a genuine mistake at this point.

The goal is to win a premiership, not exist in the mid-table and make finals every now and then.

I agree - the embarrassment of 2020 and the pain of bottom-10 finishes for 7 years might be the thing that has finally forced us to draft a flag-worthy list. We'll see in the next few years.

Will need to win the games decided by less than a kick to be a chance especially on the road.

Agree. Very nice to get Thilthorpe. I still believe if you trade well and draft well then every 5 or 6 years you should be in line for a flag. 2002, 05-2006, 2012 and 2017 should have seen 2 or 3 flags

Matthew Nicks is certainly building something,

Forward half looks unreal with so many avenues to goal. Rankine has been such an astute addition and transformed that whole midfield/forward role.

The midfield seems to bat deeper now than it has in any previous years. Keays is probably the best bag-for-buck player in the comp.

The back line is the worry for mine, do they have the ears that can carry a team on a wet preliminary final night? Laird was moved back recently? so maybe that leadership will help with generation next.
The key backs are unheralded but get the job done. Think Butts if/when he returns will do wonders but dont see stability with the Borlase/Keae current combination.

Time will tell but I currently have them in my top 4 despite the loss yesterday

The Crows board has been clamouring for Butts over Borlase the past fortnight, but apparently Butts is coming off an interrupted pre-season.

Murray is probably the big absence at the moment as he's our most solid KPD.

But it didn't. All those years put us on thin edges that we didn't hit on, and we quickly found ourselves back in the mid-table, existing.

The Geelong model only works when you can attract top (or soon to be top) 10-20 players in the comp to the club via trade. Look at the efforts Hawthorn, Richmond, West Coast or North at trying to replicate it - just ended in being forced into a deep rebuild after a couple of years of middling.

Drafting well? You may as well draft well with a top 5 pick in your hand.

Nicks is clueless
He has hamstrung development of many young players
He has his favourite senior players who’ve tried and failed numerous times
He coaches week to week and constantly contradicts himself , he’s a cancer that needs to go

We should be throwing $$$ at Dean Cox or Nathan Buckley

The below team is more than good enough to play finals and on its day can match it with anyone
Under the current regime it’s failing , that’s on him

FB: Michaelanny- Murray- Worrell

HB: Nankervis - Keane - Milera

C: Soligo - Crouch - Hinge

HF: Rachele - Walker - Pedlar

FF: Keays - Thilthorpe- Fogarty

R: O’Brien - Dawson - Rankine

INT: Cook - Curtin - Schoenberg- Laird

Sub: Berry
What's your opinion on Nicks now?
New assistants along with recruitment of Cumming, Neal-Bullen and Peatling is looking good and Nicks deserves credit.

Nicks is still not a very smart man.

Thankfully Davis is covering up most of his weaknesses.

But unfortunately still making poor selections like Milera over Nankervis, Borlase over Butts & picking Murphy is beyond stupid.

He's not a premiership coach. Struggles with the media, doesn't seem like he's the guy that can inspire players to greatness. I just don't see the connection between coach and players you get with other very good coaches.

I genuinely believe he's the worst coach in the system as of now. Even if Ken left Port Adelaide, he'd take another side to finals.

Verdict obviously out on YZE

He won't make it past 2025.
What's your Opinion on Nicks now? People wanted Hardwick sacked for Years and look how that turned out. Nicks has the Crows firing on all Cylinders and I bet Victorians would hate to see them win a Flag.

Still too early to say... remember the Craig years... great regular seasons... but didn't have the gameplan for finals... so still early. However he has got them playing a system which hopefully does stand up in finals

Mistakes this year imho has been picking Murphy and also not developing the young players.
