He is in game, all the performances you are quoting are not actually in game. I could not imagine anyone thinking, on cutting evidence, that he has speed in game. He might be a flash running to the shops but it is not converting in game.

If he didn’t have an inside game would he be playing st all….he is no outside runner.
I was of the same view earlier in the season.. look at his chase down tackle of Wanganeen Milera. He has a strong burst of speed I think. Sure he's not Usain Bolt, but either is a guy like Levi Ashcroft who happened to win the norm smith medal.

I'm glad he's re-signed. I hope next year he justifies his decision to stay.

Re his speed, I think a lot of players are physically faster than they seem. Sheldrick, like a lot of our players, I think can be slow mentally. In that he gets the same sorts of brain-melts that pretty much every one of our other midfielder gets, where they have no idea where they, their teammates, or their opponents, are supposed to be. It leads to these situations where we somehow manage to have every player at the stoppage out of position at once. Opposition mids then just burst away and as a result we end up looking slow.

I don't know what we train and practice throughout the week, but it is not stoppage tactics.

He’s 22 games in….

What's your point?
Saying he’s mentally slow and you have no idea how to train him.
Experience comes with games, match fitness comes with games.
If he’s 50 plus games in and we see the same brain fades and errors I think these concerns are real.
You’ve said you don’t see it with him, I’m saying he’s not reached his ceiling of what we drafted him at as his 22 games in.
That’s my point.

I was defending him, saying that he looks slower than he is because he can get caught out of position, which I think is the case with all of our mids, more so than lacking actual pace.

So you don’t understand my point? I thought was pretty straight forward.

The absolute faith the club seems to have in the entire list is a bit odd.

I don’t think radical change is needed, but they can’t expect to keep every player from the list that had failed in the same way about 8-10 times over the past 4 years and expect things to suddenly be different?

The biggest issue I have is the club seems hellbent in giving long term contracts, and it's every bloke on the list! We have to have near the most long term contracts on average or close to it. On what planet was it good business giving Florent a contract that long? Lets not pretend he was in Brownlow form when we did it either. Sometimes it is better to call the players buff and say here is 3 years, take it or bugger off and we will get a fair trade.

Very well put without any draft stuff lol

These contracts are just bad I mean we had Foote on a 4 year deal or something for goodness sakes. I have no issue with Heeney getting one or Chad or someone like that but can we stop giving borderline best 22 players 4+ year deals it’s making this situation worse

This contract is sensible for both sides

GUS 78 :p

I thereby declare Gus to be easily THE most interesting player on the Sydney Swans list*.

* Except for Logan, who has racked up 122 pages. But he's on the Bigfooty inactive list for now, so doesn't count. Chad, Heeney and Papley fall outside the bounds of this study.

JJ and Harry are clearly in need of some controversy to boost their poster appeal.

We haven't seen the best of Cleary in seniors as he gets SFA time in the mids but he performs very well on the inside in VFL. Otherwise agreed.
My concern with Cleary is that people keep saying, "He'll get his time" in the midfield. But will he? I'm not really sure what's going to change in regards to the midfield next year. No one in there is even 30.
