Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Your first rounder is likely going to be pushed out into the 20s, give or take a few ladder positions. That seems roughly what his value would be to you.

I just think it's overs for a 30yo who we might only get 3 years out of and I don't believe in trading high picks for rucks generally.
But that said we are in the window and it's a poor draft year so I can see us doing that deal. I still think the biggest obstacle is SOS he will want more than we will pay.

He would play finals at Geelong but with your current list you’re not beating Collingwood or Brisbane over next couple seasons without some decent improvements to your playing list

We’ve beaten Collingwood plenty of times in recent years, we match up with them really really well. We were in front in the Prelim last year with 2 minutes to go against the Lions.

The differences are minor, if anything grabbing Smith made us better, Neale has gotten better, adding O’Sullivan has made us better.

If we can execute we can definitely beat both.

Collingwood are heading for a massive cliff with their list profile. Brisbane is a different animal due to their Academy co concessions. Geelong are as good a chance as anyone of a flag in the next couple of years given how weak the top teams are.

Collingwood is usually our avenue to a premiership in finals. They're good this year but we stack up well against them. Brisbane we ain't beating though

Is Geelong age profile any better though got some key players getting towards the end danger, Cameron just to name a couple hard to replace those types

I feel like Collingwood are much more reliant on their older guys to win them games though. Your pendlebury, sidebottom, mihocek and Elliot in particular are crucial to helping them win close games as is howe. Yes daicos x 2 is elite but they rely on those guys. When they drop off or retire it will really expose their youth below them (which i dont think they have the quality).

We have a lot of older guys numerically but most are role players at this point. Stanley is the place holder ruck, cam Guthrie is done, bews is phased out, Duncan will be the same. Even danger is essentially a bit part forward now. Stewart has been injured or off the boil most of the year but Guthrie (zac) has taken over that role. Other than blicavs who is invaluable for structural reasons we don't rely on any of the old guys. Your Smith, Holmes, miers, mannagh, Atkins and Dempsey plus Guthrie and Henry as the structure down back are the prime movers that we rely on now.

Exactly, I feel like people don’t watch us and automatically think Pies and Cats are exactly the same.

Outside Jez who is a freak and Blics who is a unicorn the others have essentially become role players.
Danger, Stanley and Stewy just do their role and get it done but they aren’t the difference between a win and a loss unless they turn back the clock for a game or two. Cam Guthrie, Duncan and Bews are done already end of this year.

Baz, Holmes, Miers, Dempsey, Zuthrie, Neale, O’Sullivan, Jack Henry for example far more influential on a win or a loss.

Now back on track in terms of Rowan Marshall.

Stanley has been an absolute servant but he’s basically filling a gap until Conway, Edwards, Mollier etc are ready and over injury issues. We need a guy right now to take over Rhys so he can retire to his farm for good.
I love the guy but his poor bones are copping it every week.
Think Rowan would be a fantastic pickup, however it depends on the price.

If SOS is gonna be a clown about it no deal, Cats will walk away.

Make of that what you will

Doesn’t sound great unfortunately. We need to keep him even if De Koning comes, we have nowhere near enough quality tall players on our list even if he stays and we get TDK.

The difference is if he wants to be there.
Can't imagine bringing in a direct replacement on almost double the money sounds enticing for him to stick around when he's getting directly replaced in a unique position.

Cats fans, I know he signed for two years (same length of Roma's contract) but how untouchable is Sam de Koning? I've been manifesting him in St Kilda colours for the past year.

You would have to convince him first, so I expect we wouldn't even get to the point of you calling us.

The coaches love him, he loves surfing and playing footy. You'd have to offer a big bucket of cash to turn his ear

He's untouchable based on the fact he loves where he lives and where he plays.

You'd have to pay him a big truckload of cash to walk on top of him actually wanting to go and then what his value is in a trade.

We have cash, although I'm sure we weren't anticipating Nas' contract to rise the way it has this year. I reckon last year Sam was probably ripe for the picking after being left out of the team, this yeah not so much.

I do find an irony that Roma may be leaving St Kilda to Geelong because he can't play 50/50 with a de Koning... only to find another one at GMHBA.

I see Sam as a stronger defender than ruck, would that be a fair assessment?

Also, what is Roma costing Geelong keeping in mind SOS us a prick and he's got 2 years on s contract.

Yeah sam ain't a ruck. He was worth a shot and we can pull that lever in an emergency but I doubt he'll ever be a starting ruck by choice ever again.

His only ruck competition is 34yo Rhys Stanley, 20yo and no where near ready Edwards, and permanently injury listed Conway

Tom is a Ruck who can play forward when required albeit very average

Sam is a fullback who filled in at Ruck when we had no other options as Stanley was injured.

Sam only missed Finals last year as he was coming back from knee surgery and Scotty didn’t want to risk him coming off pretty invasive surgery.
Had nothing to do with talent, his place in the side or how they viewed him.

He’s very much best 22 and is key as our fullback.

If RoMa was ever to play for Geelong, that starting Ruck gig is his no questions asked.

He would have no current competition outside Conway which is being debated on our board right now. Conway could be anything but he’s spent majority of his career on the sidelines. Edwards is very unique in which he could play multiple roles but he’s still nowhere near ready for AFL level footy. Stanley is old and keeps dragging the body through another year, at this point he’s doing us a favour playing on as we haven’t had what we’ve needed in that position.

A bit of a different situation with TDK getting a huge offer. He’s not coming over to play as a forward on that money. That’s for a starting Ruck gig which then by default pushes a 800k RoMa who plays majority time ruck into a majority forward position.

Geez, you are quoting $800k for Roma and the Saints will reinvest that into Leek Aleer who has barely shown a glimpse of consistent footy - if that happens that explains almost everything about the two clubs.

Appreciate your post about Sam. I thought there was more to it with him being 'ignored' in last year's finals but you can't always rely on sensationalistic journalism. I see him as a gun, especially considering St Kilda has been embarrassed without a key tall with Howard being injured/old now - he's exactly what we'd need.

I really can't see what Geelong could offer St Kilda. I'd be disappointed with your first this year, assuming you at least make a prelim - that pick is likely to be late 20s in a below average draft.
