Dillon has already knocked it on the head in an article in the Age. He's interchangeable with any of the vfl talking heads in the media.

Very pleased with Pyke going on the public record now we will be seeking assistance.

If the AFL was happy to have this conversation publicly to dissuade us from asking they can now publicly say why they will not assist us.

Pyke handed this perfectly.

We pointed out our record is on par with teams provided assistance before us ✅

We alluded to the draft being incredibly compromised, in particular this year. ✅

We got on the front foot and mentioned that winning a premiership 7 years ago has no bearing on how long we stay at the bottom of the ladder for ✅

And my favourite point from Pyke?

“If there is no wish to provide assistance, I think in the future we are removing this as a mechanism for teams in this situation and a departure from equalisation,”

We force them to set a precedent and make it known we will object if overlooked any club ever receiving help again. 👏

Could just let us pre-list our NGA prospects for this year?

They are 'good not great' types though right?

Hard to tell at this stage, other clubs will have their own good not great Academy types and the media only get hyped about Northern Academy types with that 'unseen mystique'.

Club has done everything in it's power in regards to off field changes and we are historically shite.

It will definitely be something. The one thing he missed was not bringing up Brisbane's priority pick as Swann would look like a complete hypocrite if we were to now get nothing.

Hypocrite to who? All other fans will rejoice if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t matter that it’s hypocritical.

Connecting assistance to equalisation was such a savvy move, given that equalisation measures to support other teams are directly impacting our ability to rebuild. Why shouldn't the balances move the other way?

Comfortable that the case we present to the AFL will be a strong one.

Whether the AFL agree is another matter - Cue Greg Swann fumbling infont of a mic:
"Um we can see the Eagles attempted to request assistance, ahh but I didn't pick up the phone. So no impact. No impact no assistance. Just like Toby. It's in um the rules"

We're asking. Pyke confirms.

Sue the bastards if they don't treat us as equally as they have treated Norf.
The VaFL have set a precedent.

For the LOLs Pyke should ask that our pick 1 and pick 2 cannot be matched by another team with a academy bid. I just want to hear what the justification is for it :D
I agree with this, but that should be our counter offer when they knock back compensation. We should ask for our first and second round picks to fall at 1 and 19 and we get who we pick.

I hope we go nuclear on draft night and make all clubs with high ranking academy and f/s pay full price. Seeing seven bids with picks 1 and 2 would be hilarious. It would also have the added benefit of our first pick as an historically shit side slide back to 5 or 6- again highlighting the "quirks of the draft" plus it would clear out a lot of 1st and 2nd round picks from the sides matching so that our natural 2nd and 3rd rounders will be closer to where they should be.

Agree with this entirely. They leak like a politician at budget time. They know they're going to say no, so they get it out there in advance so it doesn't come as a surprise.

Put pressure on by asking Swanny for what Swanny was given. Ask. Make them say NO.
Point out the F/S leg up the two bestteams in the comp got. Just lucky, but it's something we haven't been handed for nothing.
Point out the concussions. 2 x first round, a 5 x AA and a guy who never got a chance to show what he had.

#1 request.
The ability to set up a Western Academy that operates as per the Northern Academies.
In my opinion all academys should be run by the afl

In this mornings west Jackson Barrett makes the case for not granting help to the eagles. He uses the we sold the farm to get Tim Kelly line. He fails to mention how the draft picks we traded to the cats have turned out. The cats bundled them up and on traded them to GWS for Jeremy Cameron. i think those players all turned out to be duds and have probably been delisted. Barrett has chosen to only tell half the story. Typical crap journalism from "The Worst "

Pick 1 2 and 3 would be intense especially when it came to bribing Gold Coast and Brisbane on top of all that. Id want pick 14 for Gold coasts future 1st and 19 for Brisbane's future 1st or we bid on Uwland and Annable with pick 1.

Will leave us with 3 first rounders in 2026 too

Not unexpected, but it's started already.

Two headlines from The Age and Herald Sun (which I won't open).

West Coast’s ‘inappropriate’ draft assistance request:

Seven years after winning a flag, the Eagles have asked the AFL for draft help

If they don't provide us assistance then so be it. It's their prerogative but i would then expect the club to go hard on fixing the draft and removing the madness that currently takes place and letting them know we will fight assistance provided to any club in the future regardless or membership base or financial security.

Stand on your own two feet or fold.

That article has both the for and against arguments and is pretty well balanced. The against side is very weak.
There is plenty to go at the Worst over, that article probably is the least of it though.

No doubt the same authors who wrote that we were negligent for having our second pick at pick 30 in 2023, when we'd just won the spoon. Forgetting to mention that second pick was supposed to be pick 19 before academy and compo picks ****ed it, and the only way to generate an extra pick in the first round was to trade the pick that was going to be Harley Reid, who is clearly the best player from that draft.

The AFL dug themself into a hole with their ****ing academies, if it wasn't for them I'd be totally opposed to compo (unless it was like the old days where if you're under a certain amount of wins you get compo no matter what. Clear and easy to understand. Melbourne's tanking ****ed that right up) As it stands the draft cannot be used as an equalisation method, it's completely broken.

Be interesting the stance of the AFL if no assistance forthcoming given what NM have received recently and how that affects other clubs going forward

Melbourne & Carlton could possibly really struggle in the next few years along with Richmond

They're more likely to get kicked back something when the Tassie drafts 'compromise' their rebuild.

I really don't understand the "they got themselves into this mess" arguments. Literally every team who is on the bottom got themselves into that mess. What genius trades and recruitment did North Melbourne do that meant bottoming out after multiple finals appearances including a prelim in 2015 wasn't their fault (not to mention appointing a coach under investigation who couldn't coach for a season)?

It's so funny to watch the vics contradict themselves just because they're salty from 1992 :p
