Autopsy Round 21, 2025: Hawks can’t get it done against the Crows

One classy, one-touch mid short of being a contender this year. Hopefully we can fix that in the off season (or we can get one of a few already on our list to take the next step next year).

Soligo is your perfect example. Was pretty good up until this year he's gone up a level and is their best full-time mid behind Dawson. Ward is their Soligo IMO. Another year to keep developing hopefully he emerges into a very good midfielder because we need him to be.

They have been amazing the last few weeks.

We took it right up to them on their home deck. We missed a couple of easy ones at the end and had a terrible second quarter..

..... But... we were still in it with 5 minutes to go.

For those questioning the 4 talls, tough game to make a call on it.

Dominated the first quarter with the planned strategy and we weren’t far off wining if Mass slotted that goal.

Plus the delivery was pretty ordinary.

Not saying it was a success, just saying it wasn’t far off potentially being a master stroke and probably need to see it against a few sides to see if it works or not.

It had 0 impact? Lewis, Chol and Dear were all poor. They offered no potentcy inside 50, were not a bail out option up on the wings. When our midfield went to shit we got exposed badly for looking slow.

I don't know if we watched the same game, we were competitive in spite of the 4 talls not because of it.

The 4 talls didnt work argument is strange. We scored 87 points in essentially 3 quarters. You dont put those numbers up against a solid defense if it isnt working. Might want to look at the midfield and leaky defense for the reasons we lost. Had nothing to do with our forward structure

The result was about right. Adelaide at home in their current form are formidable, we did well to keep it that close.
In the end we lacked composure when it mattered. This bullshit of kicking around the corner when 30m out and not making the distance, needs to stop.
Our defence is really good, our forward line is just ok (it’s a worry when Gunners is still our best tall) but our midfield is pedestrian. Worpel, just no. Love Nashy but unless he is bashing packs and clearing a path, he doesn’t offer much else.
Our small forwards were poor, Watson, Moore and MacDonald have had pretty ordinary seasons.
Some tough decisions will need to be made in the off season. We may still make the finals, but we’d be making up the numbers.

Well I do. Has to be Lewis. Knew this would happen with Chol. Basically told to keep down and let Lewis and Dear go for it, when he has been the dominate mark up forward all year. When 3 of the 4 tall forwards had almost no impact i think it is fair to say it didn't work.

I think it's kind of like yeah 4 gun key forwards would work but yeah they aren't all 4 key gun forwards and all certainly don't play to compliment each other.

Wouldn’t be the worst thing to miss finals this year, get a fire in the belly. Get an easier draw and our good players fit and firing for 2026 assault at the flag. Unfortunately, we’ve been on the back foot all year with our best players missing most of the season ( except for Newcombe and Meek).

Thing is, we get brutal fixtures every year!

Probably the story of the season weve played some close games but couldn't get it done when it mattered. The close losses to the Cats, Suns, Dockers and now Crows are hurting our finals chances. In our 3peat we somehow found a way to win.

If we can convert Worpel to Zac Butters/Harley Reid in the off season could make a huge difference. We just need more class in the midfield to help Day & Newcombe instead of turn over kings.

You just raised the root cause of why we looked slow. We had 7 inside 50s in the second quarter and 0 deep inside 50s. Any team's forward line will look ordinary with those stats. We lost the contested possessions by over 20 in that quarter alone. Its a little more complex than the forward line made us look slow.

We need a Composure Coach. We need a surgeon in the middle. We have the Shropshire Slasher. Apart from anything else we lack the synergy that comes from playing the same team, give or take, for an extended period of time. If we loose next week we'll know where we're at. Lewis dominated VFL came back had a good game last week and provided a contest tonight, but being double teamed due to poor spacing.

One of Chol or Dear will probably miss if they cannot fix the spacing issue.

Ironic tho, because I’ve never read something so stupid. Lewis had 70 goals in less than 30 games last time he played fully fit which is better than any other forward bar Gunston.

He’s the monster and big KPF, Chol/Dear the mobile and athletic one and it’ll be one of them missing or fixing the spacing issue. Gunston the roaming.

Lewis got double teamed and rammed without any space at all all night but provided a contest, still had.
