I was told by someone back in '17 about Tex as captain. They said he wasn't the greatest leader off the field, but there was a belief in him across the group on field that when he was firing and stood up that the team could do anything.

I get the feeling there's that same belief in Dawson on field. It was his 2 goals that got the team fired up and once he started going you could see that it lifted the side to where they needed to be to win.
Roo, Tex and now Dawson are leaders who can take over a game and lead through periods of dominance. It lifts the team.

Even last night Tex had that period late where he did this. Made sure he was the man in clutch time.

Dawson's second quarter was the epitome of "Skipper Time".

Interesting to see Lloyd Meek on the bench going over footage on the laptop with Brett Ratten in game, obviously Mitchell had issues with the way he was matching up on ROB.

I remember when we played them earlier in the year they showed Mitchell in the box a few times near the end of the 2nd quarter and he wasn't even watching the play and was with David Mackay going over footage. Looks like he's a very proactive and perceptive coach who spots stuff he doesn't like and immediately works on correcting it.

And now we can all look forward to Essendon for the next two Friday nights.
... and they'll have a Thurs or Fri slot for R24 as well.

Unlike R22 & R23 (for which there is no excuse), there is a good reason for giving them a prime slot in R24. Both Essendon & Gold Coast have to play their R1 game in the week following R24, so their R24 game needs to be scheduled early to give them as much recovery time as possible.

He really does it all.
12 tackles as well, averages 7 a game which is huge.

I would sometimes fill in for B grade after under 17s, had some brutal double calf cramps going for marks late 😂
Had one in the hamstring the other night, made me fall off my chair.
FU cramps

Also will be great for their entitled supporter base. Fans are an unlikeable as the team
Their BF board seems pretty good. I went and looked at their autopsy thread last night expecting to see the usual melts, catastrophising and umpire blaming you usually see on this board and others but the most common type of post seemed to be that Adelaide played well and deserved the win, and it was a reasonable performance on the road. Was a bit of a shock to be honest.

I reckon Mitchell is one of the best coaches going round. Was a very smart footballer and seems very analytical.

Hawthorn will be around the mark with us the next few years.

They really need some midfield class. Zac Butters would be perfect for them.

Mitchell was also one of the biggest snipers to play the game....just ask Tex who copped two Mitchell specials...corked thighs during his career.

West Coast are the closest I go to having a second side. Sheed's goal was my favourite GF moment since 1998.
Growing up I always liked St Kilda as a second side (they were terrible, and I liked the idea of a crappy side coming good). West Coast was my third favourite. These days WC are definitely second thanks to being a non-Vic side. We're basically sister clubs, even if they heaped a lot of pain on us during the 00's.

Good:
Winning under pressure and not controlling the game in full (maybe 55/45 Hawks).
Nicks coaching of the side, how well drilled they are, believing in themselves, trusting what they have.
Dan Curtin being thrown into the middle in the last and that attack on the ball on the outer wing to draw a free.
Jones should play a full game, just so we know what he might be able to bring. I liked a few of the things he did in the last.
Berry didn't get a lot but when he got clearance out of the centre, they were running entries into F50, he moves really nicely for a such a heavy set guy.
We looked a bit flat and tired by the end of the night, a nice 9 day break coming up for the Perth trip will be good.

Bad:
It wasn't the night for Cook.
With games like last night, I think Matt Crouch would have been very handy, just to control some of the stoppages we kept losing.
Our defence looked really shaky at times, Max Michalanney is a bit loss but will be back when it matters. Smith wasn't super but not terrible.
Peatling had a nightmare, but kept at it.

Ugly:
No such thing when knocking off that lot.

Howler is a bit tough. He didn't get his usual high possessions, a couple of ball-handling issues early, but I liked his tackling and second efforts. Have a look at the last 1/4.
He was super fumbly in Q1, but then sorted himself out and contributed. Not great, not bad.

2017 home finals were like that.
We sat near the Geelong cheer squad for the prelim. Sloane mowed down Danger right in front of me. It was one of the greatest nights of my life.

O kicks, 0 Handballs, 0 Tackles in the last quarter.

His best quarter was his 3rd quarter. 3 kicks, 3 handballs and 2 turnovers to go with 1 tackle.

He had a howler. I am a huge Peatling fan, think he is our best of the 3 recruits and is having a brilliant season.

Its perfectly okay to accept a good player had a terrible night.
I stand corrected. 3rd 1/4. :thumbsu:

Curtin was off with some of his kicking tonight, but he’s baby Jesus and the contested marks and beast mode running stuff just makes you forget about it.

I’m not at all concerned about Berry moving forward, and respect that he was clearly asked to focus on limiting Newcombe’s IMPACT and applying pressure to him as his number 1 task tonight.

Side note: Crouch is clearly never getting back in. It just doesn’t make any sense for our game style.
Yep, Matty, who I love, is now there just in case Berry gets injured. He’s still a good inside player and tbh looked fine early in the season dishing out to Dawson et al, but Berry has gone passed him now. No shame. Age and injury take its toll.

How bloody good is he!

And Izak in Q4!

When Izak kicked that early Q4 goal right out of nowhere, I knew we were winning it.

If it's Crouch or Berry I'm taking Berry. Has the ability to break lines that Crouch doesn't have.

When Nicksy was asked about Crouch in his presser during the week he was lot more vague than he'd usually be if he was frothing to get him back in the team. Very non-committal and talked more about wanting to be sure he can get his body right to go week after week without soreness. Could be selective hearing but sounded to me like he was giving themselves an excuse to not play him.

You actually believe that clubs only select for next week. Interesting take on developing a team.

It's not even an interesting take, as it's that established across the league. This is evident by ever-trending upwards age and experience in best 22s, which indicates teams have become more adverse/selective to playing kids as time has gone on. I.e. there must be short-term gain. It's also part of why us and the Hawks (and the failed rebuilds as well) burnt our list to cinders in the first few years of our rebuild, because that is the only way you force kids to be played.

Every selection is purely about the short term. Heck, even the one example your thinking about in the contrary this year, Curtin as a 4th tall, is purely a short term move. We do that, because we think Curtin in a bad structure is considerably better than Taylor/Pedlar/Murphy/Cook; evident from how unsettled we became in the 7th forward role once Curtin moved (noting we had 5 people play in this role in the next 11 weeks). It's also why it's only the elite talents who get prioritised, a part of being that elite talent is they're usually able to perform at a reasonable click at 18-19 years old. Levi (and Will) Ashcroft weren't getting games because their the future of Brisbane, it's because their game is already in a good enough place to average 19 disposals a game in their first year. Look at anyone who gets games when their young, there is a short term role they can do decently well (also why the vast majority of midfield prospects have to cut their teeth elsewhere).

Every frustrating thing you see with us? Every other club does the same (and reading opposition changes threads can be cathartic at times). They'll readily go to their experience back ups (if they have them). There will be kids that they don't play regardless of their 2nds form and always a few whipping boys fans have become irate from.
