Autopsy 14 point win vs Essendon

Thank God we won, I guess. Two poor teams in bad conditions. It was never going to be match of the round.

Blakey had a good game but got a lot of free ball playing the goal keeper role.

Big Brodie is going to get a few 3 vote games, that's for sure.

Datolli had a good first half then drifted out of it. Keep playing him. It was a shame Datolli didn't convert one of his opportunities.

Definitely like what I see in Buller. He's looked more comfortable at the level every week. Good contested marker in particular.

Chad was super disappointing. Effort is definitely not there and his form is as bad as I've ever seem him play.

I thought Errol had a good first half but I don't like this attitude he is developing. It's the same stroppy attitude that's crept into the team lately. Pull your head in and play football.

Campbell was a great example of someone who brought the effort. Got rewarded with lots of the footy.

Keep playing Cleary. Might as well.

It was a dull game in which Essendon wanted it more and we just had enough polish to get the job done. Not much to play for I guess.

Dean Cox is not the answer for us. Individuals got us over the line against a side Northern Bullants would have been a chance against. I can’t see this system. Blakey spoke about after the game, we are heading into two massive losses based on that crap.

We need fresh ideas in the box. I can’t see much teamwork or cohesion, the dump kicks when other options within sight are blatantly ignored just scream trouble for us..

I think today tells us, fundamentally, this is not a player issue

Awful considering Essendon basically fielded a C team with almost half their team playing 20 games or less.

Embarrassing efforts by some of our mid-senior players in the second half, namely Warner, Paps and Errol.

Grundy, Blakey and Campbell a huge tick today, though!
They want to play pretty front running football. Warner the pinup boy for it.
I’m very unimpressed by the list. Perhaps a worst list of players capable of gelling as a team I’ve seen since pre Barrassi. We have too many selfish me me me players.

Dattoli did some nice things today, just like viewing in the VFL shows some nice composure with ball in hand. Unlucky to not nab a snag, should hopefully stay in.

I could name 6 or so players who put in solid individual performances.

Shame this ain't The Davis Cup.

Structures and game plan (or adherence to) have been a rabble for a while.

Geez that was shit house. But it is what it is. I suppose there is no point passing judgments on players based on their versions of themselves this year. Everyone's a mess and a lesser version of themselves so it's impossible to assess what players are or aren't supposed to be working on, what the game plan is, etc.

I thought Grundy was good, and constantly put it to good places and knew his limits as a big fella today. His work rate is self-explanatory.

Dattoli had some promising moments. I think most importantly he just didn't look out of place (which admittedly is not hard in this team at the moment - most look VFL standard.) But he just competed well. Speaking of competing...

I am so impressed with Buller's endeavour. He just doesn't give up on a contest. If he's out-bodied, he instantly gets himself back up and gives a second effort or tries to redeem himself. If a ball spills away, he reaches out a desperate toe to get onto it or lunges for a desperate tackle that might not be successful but at least puts a bit of pressure on.

Campbell was great I thought. I kinda like him in the role he was in today. Just running around going wherever he wants, impacting every contest and hitting every ball at full speed.

Blakey intercepting and handballing, rather than trying to flex his extremely-dubious kicking skills, was a better fit for him I feel. I prefer him running and carrying to get to at least the front half, and then if he fluffs a kick, at least it's not as dangerous because he's not turning it over in the middle of the ground.

Rowbottom forward was meh. Beyond showing that, contrary to popular opinion, his bag of tricks is bigger than just tackling - his crumbing, body work and marking were all impressive - I'm not sure what the point of the move was. We still miss his overall impact up and around the ground, but that's been the case all year really, even when playing midfield. Him still leading the tackles whilst stationed exclusively forward is also an indictment on the rest of this team.

Cleary sitting on the pine for three quarters was incredibly frustrating, especially when he'd done more to earn a spot than Florent, who unsurprisingly just showed again why he was in the VFL. He just can't positively impact at the moment.

The less said about Warner the better.

Better get used to this over the next month. It's gonna be hard to create reasons to get up and give their all, especially for a team that already struggles in that department and generally relies on ability > effort.

Onto the next one.

What is he supposed to do when he's got less coaches to help him than Horse had last year, Leon Cameron forced to go up into the box as a stop-gap measure, and Logan McDonald is the one running the comms from the box on the bench!

Believe Chad is number 1?

If they wanted to hire me, I'd cost them nothing in soft cap as I'd do it for free 😅

Pretty sure I read that Chad Warner is the player that passed him at 100 for 1st place.
