Autopsy 14 point win vs Essendon

Is this year the first time people have watched Warner play? He's been like this for years now. He's just had a lot of quality around him to cover for his many and glaring weaknesses.

In his defence, the coaches allowed him to become this player. He was the guy who had to be told to take it easy in tackling drills in his first pre-season because he was going too hard at his teammates. That player is all but gone now.

But yay highlights I guess

Cox is correct - onus on players to find motivation
“I didn't find it tough to get motivated, it's probably a question you ask of the players,” Cox said when asked if it was hard to motivate the players for what was essentially a dead rubber against the Bombers.

“I think as a footy club we have to finish the year off as well as we possibly can, and that was the message from the start of the week.

At times, it strikes me that there is a touch of immaturity about the playing group, including some of the older players. Not sure if it's because they've had a father figure coach in Longmire for so long or something else. Seem to carry on like schoolmates rather than footy team mates. My theories could be way off but it could explain some of our performances.

13 pressure acts, 10 contested possessions, a couple of smothers.

Nah. Just lazy.

People need to recognise the difference between body language and effort.

It’s the discretionary effort, we have players who switch on and off too often

This answer stood out the most more than the motivation one (marked in this clip):

"we'll make sure that we reward the players that are playing good and at any level and give them every opportunity to to get into this team."

And also his answer to McKirdy's question re. Ollie:

"Ollie was OK, you know without setting the world on fire. We had a few players like that. We want consistent performances across four quarters from our players and that's what we'll chase."

If you hadn’t watched the game, you would think we had lost.

Cox is right to be disappointed with the effort.

He also needs to be careful not to become too dour with the playing group.

He has to create positive, inspiring reasons for them to want to put in.

The fact that they’re professional footballers doesn’t get there ?

They’ve got a chance over the next couple of weeks to show that they’re good enough to be back at the top of the ladder next week. If that doesn’t come from within it won’t amount to a can of beans if cox wraps them in a warm embrace or yells at them for having the standards of a checked out footballer.

This is 1000% right.

Cox has worn his heart on his sleeve a lot this season. So the good thing is you know what he’s thinking. The bad thing is that you know what he’s thinking. You can see the panic, you can see the anger, you can see the happiness.

Hopefully it’s something he can reflect on as well. For what it’s worth, I think he will be ok. Cattle will make a big difference

I listened to the Fox interviews with Errol and Blakey, and then was in the car as another interview took place via MMM with McInerney. All made mention of not being able to play finals. Chad even mentioned it in his jumper presentation to Errol.

If that’s all they’re worried about and judging off a fair chunk of tonight, the next three weeks aren’t going to be a great watch.
You saying they won’t give their all & toss it in?
Huh!
Sounds like a GF.

I have a feeling they will make a game of it against Brisbane. I don't think Cox will let this sub-standard performance slide.

It also wouldn't hurt to help exorcise the demons of the granny to play another close game against the Lions. Even a competitive loss would help create a foundation to rebuild from in 2026.

Bottom line is that we must not allow ourselves to capitulate in the remaining three games.

Very good point as we can expect Brisbane/Geelong to be contending next season as well.

Can't remember a more dispiriting win. Should have torched this under-manned team. After the no-show in second half against GWS you'd think players would have ample reason to be fired up.

The through lines in our performances in the last twelves months have been
  • inconsistent effort
  • inability to defend
  • wilting under pressure

Plenty for the whole team to work on but too few willing to put in the work. Cox was suitably diplomatic in the post-match but he flogs them on the track this week. Anything to get them out of their comfort zones.

Yep, sh!tehouse result. Played the VFL version of Bombers and was a close match. As usual we play to the standard of the team we are against , rather than blow them away like we have the potential to do.
Probably 5 or 6 Swans can hold there head up high from that. Grundy, you rock!!

Next couple of weeks I'm expecting (and hoping) we lift in the right direction for these occassions and cause more than a bit of annoyance to those 2 top 4 sides expecting easybeats. Anything less and will be a disappointing end to a disappoining year.
