I didn’t miss him getting smoked 1v1 about 20m out directly in front.

campaigner useless as a defender. Cost us 2 goals just from existing.

And what did we lose by.

Get a life king Hansen- the helmets no good
Dud, what do you expect when he's 5'4?? It's a system breakdown that he's left manning up one on one.

Gets so unfairly criticized. Has 32 (just 3 kick ins) and went at 91% DE plus more contested possessions than 16 of our players, but nah let's look at the 2 errors he made.

He had 1 clanger and you know how many Mckercher had? 9. Colby had NINE clangers but yeah nah Caleb was the shit one today.

How many goals did 36 game Colby mckercher cost us?

I’ve got 2 directly attributed to the capacity of that Edwardstown midget

Colby kicked one - so from his 8 clangers did he cost us 3?

One campaigners played 212 games and looks like he doesn’t deserve to be a modern day footballer, the other is in his second year taking the game on!!

You must be Caleb’s nana!!!

The problem is, the number of situations in which he becomes totally and utterly useless is absolutely enormous in comparison to every other player in the league that plays his role.

He did hit some good kicks today. But that is marred when Ryan Byrnes ragdolls him at the top of the square. Or when he falls over with the ball and you brace yourself for the 30m 'bail out' kick.

It's not his fault he was recruited or is continually selected. But good Christ it doesn't paint us in a great light

The only reasons I can think of why he is still getting a game.

  1. Hoping he comes good and fits into our system after round 20.
  2. To drop him would be a bad optic for any players we are targeting in the upcoming draft period “Oh I see how you treated Daniel in the 1st year of his 4 year contract. Not sure I want to come here.”
  3. Ego of Clarko, Viney and Rawlings (and the nameless Board) and like the Fonzi not wanting to admit they were WRONG in burning a #25 pick and giving him a 4 year contract.
  4. There is something in his contract he cannot be dropped for year 1.
  5. ???? I welcome other suggestions, as it’s not logical to play him each week down back, let alone in our best 22.
I though on BF, in this sort of scenario, that 'photos' would have been a possible reason?

LOL just because Caleb's played 200 games doesn't mean he gets any taller or the team systems works out so he's not one on one with a guy 20cm taller than then 20m out in front of goal.

Facts are facts. CD went at 91%DE and had ONE clanger. Good game in my books whether I'm his Nanna or great ****ing aunt.

Shocked how he's a Premiership defender and all Australian then..maybe the issue the team he's playing for and not him as an individual.

“Premiership defender”

In 2016 he was a second year player hardly known for his defence who only got 12-14 touches on grand final day. The fact he won a flag has no bearing on him as a player.

His sole AA came in the covid years and he was on the bench.

Sure, he wasn’t exposed as much in a better side, but his deficiencies were always there.

The only height matchup where he came close to matching height was when he played on wizard Watson and the wizard destroyed him.

Playing him is going in 1 short defensively (no pun intended)

sure was.

Funny that because he was in our top 5 players yesterday.
Based on padded stats from dinky 16m kicks in defense. I remember tiggers used to play cotchen as an unaccountable defender racking up cheap possies. Only difference was cotch would occasionally break lines.

In reality Neither really hurt the opposition.

I thought he had an okay game and I'm loathe to hang this guy completely until we show some sort of effort to consistently run as a football team for each other.

I'm a firm believer that if you can't defend 1 v 1 then you can't be in the backline. I don't care what role in defense anyone is playing. Daniel simply should not be down there and barring injuries, I don't see how he holds his spot. In terms of defense, all of the following are ahead of him.

Archer
Pink
LMac
Comben
Hardeman
Dawson
Goater (prior to injury)
Then you can rotate Sheezel, Kerch and FOS

This is it!

Play him (if you have to) forward as his little dinks might be of some use up forward.

Yeah. 31 stats for 10 meters gained.
And sells the next bloke into trouble by dinky kicks that leave them having to stop to receive the ball and placing the pressure directly onto them.

Hardiman, FOS and Harvey were sometimes able to break away despite the hospital passes they received.

Logue was hardly any better. Replace those two with almost anyone else and the result may have been different.

They weren't the only disappointments on the ground yesterday however, but I don't believe that the team can win with both of them playing. At least, not often anyway.

That's not the endorsement you think it is.
i would rather another alternative in his position but Clarko clearly will not drop him,but seriously after 20 games you would think someone who has even an ounce of footy iq can workout his max distance field kicking by now and lead up towards him instead of hiding behind their defender 50 metres away, automatic turnover we see ,week in,week out,

And thats the point, compare him to say Kiedean Coleman as a defensive clearance player, Coleman can break lines and put the pass out into the wider part of the ground where there is more room and less chance is a defensive error being punished on the scoreboard. he also will run and carry the first 10m so potentially achieves 60 to 70 meters gained.

Meanwhile we are popping it round in the back 30 meters deep in defence drawing pressure onto ourselves in a dangerous position where when you cough it up it virtually ensures an opposition shot on goal.

The added advantage is that Coleman is actually a decent 1 on 1 defender so when he isnt distributing he can be manning up providing defensive pressure.

The 2 different defensive structures really just leave you with a sense of astonishment.

one selection makes you a 5 goal better side, we simply are not serious come selection.

Yep. He has to stop calling for the ball in positions which are of no benefit to the side but great for his personal stat line. If there is a directive to get the ball in his hands, then that needs to stop. The opposition are allowing him space to receive the ball. You don't want to fall into (the pretty obvious) trap of doing what the opposition wants you to do.
The club and its easily led supporters need to stop reading disposal tallies and instead use their eyes to see what is sadly, self-sabotage.

You're right groo

Year 1 hasn't been great, and this week was one of his better games in blue and white. He has his limitations, and that seems to be something the coaching panel are prepared to live with. IIRC he had a nice i50 pass that led to a goal (Wardlaw or Bull? I can't remember), which I'd like to see him getting up the ground a bit more.

Year 2 and 3 will be the real litmus test on whether he is any good for the side. He looked OK in Q1 when the whole team did and you can say "Ohh, OK I get it. This is what we are trying to do all the time we just can't do that for long enough". When we are doing the right things for longer, I want to judge him then.
