Why not go to 20 teams and have 2 @10 team divisions?
The 10 teams in each division play each other twice = 18 games.

The top 8 teams in each division play a finals series like now.

The grand finalists in division 2 get swapped with the last two teams in division 1 each year.

  • 18 x 10 = 180 games plus finals
  • gather round can just be one of those 18 rounds
  • if rivals are in different divisions then bad luck, they don't play each other twice, but it is a much cleaner option and not simply $ driven

- but boo hoo
{ Anzac Day Collingwood vs Essendon isn't guaranteed anymore }
{ Queens birthday game not guaranteed anymore }

  • Division 1 Grand Final played at the MCG
  • Division 2 Grand Final played at the home ground of the team finishing higher

- Teams play at each others grounds every year, unlike Eddie's idea or the current situation.

Perhaps this has been suggested already, but it doesn't line Collingwood's pockets and artificially boost their attendances like the current situation.

Under Eddie's idea, why not gear your season towards finishing low and getting good draft picks, but having your team in form from July onwards, why push hard all season, just win 5 or 6 games at the end.

This is a simple version of my proposal:

* 24 clubs split into two divisions of 12: High & Low.

* Minor Round would have 26 weeks: 24 matches; 2 byes.
- 2x v. teams in the same division (22 matches)
- 2 interdivisional matches
(This makes sure the mandatory rivalries always happen.)

* Finals would be similar to the current format (8 clubs; 4 rounds).
- two tournaments (Gold Cup & Silver Cup)
- both divisions qualify to both cups

High Division Ladder
a. 1-6 (6) -> Gold Cup Finals
b. 7-10 (4) -> Silver Cup Finals
c. 11-12 (2) -> Eliminated/Relegated to Low

Low Division Ladder
a. 1-2 (2) -> Gold Cup Finals/Promoted to High
b. 3-6 (4) -> Silver Cup Finals
c. 7-12 (6) -> Eliminated

Silver Cup Finals
a. PF (4) -> Qualified to High
b. Others (4) -> Qualified to Low

The biggest mistake we ever made was not drafting Tom Campbell.

Melbourne have moved fast, doing it now gives them first crack at what’s out there before other teams might move their coaches on at seasons end.
This gives them the best chance to find the best candidate out there.
Totally different to our jobs for the boys approach.
We should have done the same years ago.
