Best 23 in 2025

My best attempt at a 23 for the first few rounds (I'm aware Houston can't play Round 0) based on what I've seen at traiing combined with injuries, players who are underdone:

BackMaynardMooreQuaynor
Half BackHoweMcInnesHouston
CentreJ DaicosN DaicosCrisp
Half ForwardMembreyCheckersElliott
ForwardSchultzMcStayHill
RuckCarmeonPerrymanAllan
InterchangeSidebottomMcCreeryLipinskiHoskin-Elliott
Sub/EmergMarkov (Sub)ParkerFramptonCox

I'm also assuming Mitchell and De Goey won't be available the first few rounds. Allan maybe Lipinski/Steele lose their spots when they do? Or Cox
Pendles doesn't move off 204! That's brave.

FB: Brayden Maynard, Darcy Moore, Isaac Quaynor
HB: Josh Daicos, Jeremy Howe, Dan Houston
C: Steele Sidebottom, Scott Pendlebury, Ed Allan
HF: Bobby Hill, Dan McStay, Pat Lipinski
FF: Jamie Elliott, Brody Mihocek, Beau McCreery
FOLL: Darcy Cameron, Nick Daicos, Jordan De Goey
INT: Lachie Schultz, Jack Crisp, Harry Perryman, Wil Parker, Will Hoskin-Elliott

The glaring thing with this side is the lack of height in defence. Craig McRae will surely find a place for Billy Frampton or Charlie Dean, but squeezing them in is tough. The Pies love young Ed Allan and the team needs more young legs in the midfield. Wil Parker added some dare to the backline and the Pies need more of that, which will be bolstered by Dan Houston’s arrival and Josh Daicos playing back there more. When fit, the Magpies midfield is still strong, but getting them fit at their age is the battle. This is a strong team - even recruit Tim Membrey is relegated to back-up status - but everyone needs to be firing. Josh Barnes

I hope we are bold enuf to go with this, that is, to play Allan and Parker.

Missing: Cox, Titch, Dean, Frampton, Membrey, Reef

I believe Josh made that team a while ago, hasn't been updated. While Parker prob wold have been in contention to play OR given no houston, he left the track early last night.. so not sure if he's injured. We'll wait and see.

Yes looks very strong apart from key defensive posts. There’s no more important player for us in 2025 than Moore. If he gets injured, we’re pretty much screwed.

Going to be fun trying to fit Maynard, De Goey, Mitchell, Cox into tonight’s side! 4x premiership players, 2x AA’s, 1x Brownlow.

Bad luck for now, Allan/Parker. Your time will come.

Markov might’ve locked himself into the R0 side, too! He could be more handy this year than I thought.

All three acquisitions from last October slot in – Houston, Perryman and Membrey – while Josh Daicos and Lipinski have had role tweaks over summer. Tom Mitchell isn’t considered right now given the unknown around his foot injury. McInnes wins a spot after a strong summer, but Billy Frampton and Charlie Dean will be breathing down his neck. Cox has had an interrupted start to the year. Allan showed so much in the last game of 2024, but the additions will make it hard for the former first-round pick to snag a spot if everyone is available. – Josh Gabelich

Worst case for all of our losses but we bring no players back?

Didn’t you hear? Jack Silvagni is going to eat up the cap so all we will have $ for will be a bunch of draftees. But we won’t have any good picks so we will get given picks at the end of the draft after everyone else has selected so we can fill our list.

I get you’re being tongue in cheek (or I hope so, at least), but we would get incredible draft compensation if we lost Cameron, Hill, McCreery & Allan. We would have some real ammo if that nightmare came to be

But if we lost those four, there wouldn't be much point holding on to many of the veterans. It's be a full "reset."

I think it depends. I reckon you could turn whatever we hypothetically get for Cameron & Hill into Butters pretty smoothly, and potentially bring in Flanders + Ned Reeves for our hypothetical Beau & Allan return.

All that said I don’t think it’s got a snowballs chance in hell to occur.

Brodie Holland saying on swoop pod that Cox might be a better option than Membrey com finals, with the way finals footy is played

I think I agree. What do people think?

I’ve always maintained that 2023 Cox is a better option than Membrey. The issue is I’m not confident we’ll see that version of Cox again.

Membrey is our straightest kick at goal and we are not a particularly accurate team. The games we’ve lost this year has been on the back of bad kicking for goal more often than not.

Does our VFL side play this weekend? If Bobby doesn’t play a game at AFL or VFL level this weekend it’s hard to see him being part of our finals campaign

This would be my best 23 for 2026 if Hill, Elliott and Mihocek leave

FB: Silvagni - Frampton - Quaynor
HB: Maynard - McInnes - Howe
C: Houston - De Goey - J Daicos
HF: McCreery - Moore - Schultz
FF: Harrison - McStay - Membrey

R: Cameron - N Daicos - Perryman

IC: Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Crisp, Parker

Emergency: Long, Cox, Allan
