That was the gold standard of terrible contracts (before we got into this 6 year+ craziness).

It never got the love it deserved because everyone forgot he existed by the end.

But yes, 7th in the Coleman on a made up figure of 1.1 million per season that you pulled out ur ass. Reports at the time mentioned he signed for considerable unders when he signed his contract.

Why is he currently playing like a guy worth 600k? Could ask the question of the entire Carlton team in 2025 lmao.

Though if you recall, he was playing VFL at the start of the season because he was going through some extremely personal drama that has clearly had an effect on him this year. His first or 2nd game back though he came in and whooped Geelong's crusty arses again while Neale did SFA as usual.

Besides the passage of time, I think it's really the $$ that determines what is a bad deal or not. Moderate $ and mega $$$ are very different things.

In terms of Newcombe's standing, across 2023 and 2024 (at the start of which Newcombe had played just 29 games), Newcombe was top 10 in the entire league for Coaches votes and collected 42 Brownlow votes.

In comparison to Jack Viney, Newcombe has 53 Brownlow votes in his first 76 games. Viney passed 53 Brownlow votes in 2023, at 29 years of age. Viney has passed 15 Brownlow votes once, Newcombe has done it twice in his first 3 seasons (not counting the year he joined the AFL mid season). Viney has made the AA squad once in his career, as has Newcombe, but Viney is 31 and Newcombe is 23. Viney has had over 35 coaches votes twice in his career. Newcombe has had 40+ every complete year of his career, including 80+ last year.

Newcombe averages more of the ball, more marks, more goals, more goal assists, more score involvements, more metres gained, more clearances, higher disposal efficiency, etc. Viney averages more contested ball and tackles. That data is despite Newcombe only being in his 4th season and already having received more tags and opposition attention than Viney has over the course of his career.

I actually like Viney and have a lot of respect for him but Newcombe has already shown himself likely to be a class above his level IMO.

Fair - I was more comparing him as a recent very good midfielder who found his best role was about 4th wheel in the middle behind Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw.

I like Newcombe - he is a really good player - but I don't think he is a guy you want as your #1 or #2 guy in the middle on a top of pile team.

In terms of his 6 year deal - well that's almost the new normal isn't it?

Considering Newcombe has already proven to be durable and consistent, and I assume a decent chance to be a future captain at the Hawks, then that would suggest it's a good deal for a guy who will at the very least be a stalwart for your club.
 
Most of the contracts listed are guys currently playing in the 22. There has to be worse long term contracts for guys that never play.

I'm thinking the Rory Atkins 5 year deal to Gold Coast. Played less than 10 games a season.

Matt Lobbe signing a 4 year deal back in 2014 then almost immediately falling out of favor and getting traded for nothing to Carlton

Caleb Graham at Gold Coast given a four year deal to end of 2026 and he hasn't played a single game during that contract
 
Lane Franklin, superstar player who played in 2 premierships for the hawks but none for the swans. I'm guessing the swans made that long term 10-year investment in him hoping he'd help them win a few flags along the journey.

Missed 2 years of football over those 10 years.

Always gave 100% unlike many of the names mentioned in this thread, but the goal was premierships and they won 0. And we have no idea how far that contract set them back too.

Colossal failure, when Buddy himself stated that he moved to Sydney to win premierships. The footy gods delivered a sweet sweet sweet dose of karma with the way Buddy shafted Hawthorn by having him win 0 flags at the Swans!

Contract is a disaster in every sense of the word but all reports from the time were that we heavily front loaded Saad and Williams when we signed them.

Either way been a howler despite playing some good footy the last 12 months as a small fwd.

If the injuries continue like they are Hayden Young til 2033 could be a bad one too.

If his body is breaking now im not sure how it will be come 2028 or by 2033 when he is 32 years old
