Why doesnt Geelong play finals at GMHBA Stadium?

Because we like constantly beating Collingwood at the MCG, it's our good luck charm.

2007, 2009, 2011 & 2022 - only made possible with beating our Pies in finals at our Melbourne Cheat Ground.
Why'd you shit the bed in 2010 then? And in 2019 when you finished top and shit the bed against us again? Pretty shit charm missing out on 2 certain flags

100% of our modern flags involve beating Collingwood in a final at their home ground. It doesn't mean our winning record there has to be 100%. You wouldn't expect a 6-0 record. 4-2 is already unbelievably good as it is. Similar to GWS record in GMHBA the past decade. Thankfully they can't embarrass us in finals there!

Bit rich coming from a bloke who lives on a footy forum. Gee you must be fun at parties 😂 View attachment 2381426
A post count! Oh you even did the blue arrow and everything. Merciless.

"you must be fun at parties" is absolutely 35 year old virgin, living in Mum's basement talk. At least you got to feel like a big man for half a second, Lord Bontempelli.

We don't have another home ground.
You would understand that " Home Ground" is a very loose definition in the real world of AFL in Victoria. The Cat's are indeed the only club in Victoria with a true "home ground" compared to all other Victorian clubs. The matches fixtured at Kardinia Park during the season and finals are predicated on the likelihood that the match would not otherwise be classified as a potential blockbuster at the G.

The Cats due to their long and successful history are a large supporter based club, the AFL wants as many of them to turn up to the footy as often and as much as possible. Whilst it's not always possible to predict which matches are likely to be blockbusters the AFL even fixtures struggling clubs like Essendon and Carlton this season to play their home matches at the G against the Cat's instead of their "normal home ground (Ha Ha ! ) Marvel" so it bolsters the numbers for those clubs with the huge Cat's fans base turning up.

In other words the true Geelong fan base has outgrown KP. It's great for lower profile matches but so many people love to see the hoops at the G!

As a foot note it seems to me St Kilda, North and the Bulldogs are given the raw end of the stick. They should be given a few MCG home games.... playing all home games at Marvel will never give you a chance to get a Membership base up to 80,000 plus......OK I know North is currently nowhere near that but the Dogs and particularly the Saints with sustained success could really ramp up their membership.

We need more discourse about this

Yeah this topic has barely been discussed over the years.

I am liking what I am seeing from you blokes this year. If you can tighten up your defence even by a fraction, look out.

edit: and I may begrudgingly state publicly that Chris Scott may in fact be the smartest coach of the lot. MAY.

Back in 2017 they probably beat Richmond in the qualifier. They could have made and won the grand final perhaps. More than likely. The AFL are greedy in they look after themselves they just care about more tickets and more money. They could of had a prelim vs the Lions last year too. Geelong get shafted they shouldn't have to play at the G.

Thoughts?

Richmond & Geelong played at GMHBA less than a month before the Qualifying final.

Geelong won by 14 points in a game where Martin mostly rested forward, Richmond played with a man down for 3/4 of the game after Caddy got injured and Geelong had one dominant quarter.

Even if the Qualifying final was at GMHBA, the Tigers then had experience playing there — as the R21 match was their first match there in 5 seasons.

Richmond led the Qualifying Final from start to finish with a dominant 51 point win.

Is the change in venue equivalent to a 10 goal turn around?

Richmond didn't just beat them. They killed them. They were winning anywhere.

Same with the prelim against Adelaide.

Its not a ground suited for finals football, its a simple as that. The GFC/AFL and Victorian government stuffed up by not making it a 100,000 seat stadium. And the playing surface is worse than Marvel/Stadium Australia combined!!!

This is why all we know you’re a nuffy. 100,000? As if.
It’s an extremely good surface.

Same reason they play big matches against Collingwood, Carlton at the MCG. Same reason why Collingwood never play there. They want the big crowds.

Until the Cats play the Magpies at Kardinia for home games the league won't be fair, but we're used to it.

Apparently their current game style is more suited to the G. It has been less of a fortress.

They should play all finals there or none, it can’t be just low drawing teams at Geelong and then Richmond for example at the MCG. That takes the piss out of any fairness.

And that's why finals won't be played there. Circle of life Elton John style.
Finals get played at Docklands (50k), and various smaller stadiums (Gabba, Showgrounds etc). Will be very, very interesting to see if Gold Coast gets to host one, or if they have to travel to the Gabba.

For what it's worth, Waverley had heaps of seating and the main consequence of that is that for 90% of the year it felt like a soulless shithole.
