we will struggle to attract quality free agents over the next few years given our trajectory and lack of young talent coming through. Everyone can see we have to now go through a very painful transition period.

McCarthy played behind the footy against Willi in his first VFL performance. Thought it was unusual given he generally plays forward-ruck at Oakleigh. Still stick insect thin but it could be sign the club has some confidence in his future flexibility.
 
if Cameron wants to go, we need to get the best key defender available at the draft, even if we sign Silvagni for next year, but somehow also get Mcarthy in after that pick. cant be getting in a first rounder just to use it on someone we could have gathered points for.
so I would opt for a future first round ( 2026 ) pick
 
My concern is that we’ve signed up too many young players on multi-year deals plus not waiting until the end of the year to have a full body of evidence as to whether veterans should go on

We must get games into younger players to equate their worth / develop

We need at least one more elite young mid, if not two, and a bit of a focus on bringing in elite mids (as we tried w Rowell) rather than HBFers

Oh - and a quality KPD

We do not have to throw in anything else. If it’s not a pick in the 8–10 range then we should expect more coming our way

I agree - we need mids. As for younger players, I worry about the list balance - I think Cochran, Ryan, Jiath, McInness all have potential - but are they all essentially competing for the same role? Does their opportunity reduce further is we sign JSOS?

They have been in the past, they essentially gave up pick 3 for Matt Owies (yes I know Baker was a part of that but the pick went to Carlton so it's mostly true)
 
Time to be aggressive with getting rid of our older players, Mitchell, WHE, Cox to start.

If Checkers doesn't want to sign his deal good luck to him finding another club to give him multiple year, West can play next season.

Trade Cameron to Eagles for the pick they have tied to Hawks, he's fallen off massively the past month plus is a 30 year old ruckman, not sure it will play out well giving him a big contract.

Increase offer for Silvangi as we desperately need some key defender depth.

Howe, Pendlebury, Sidebottom to retire end of next year.

We need to go all out on Ben King.

It was pick 3 and 4R junk picks for picks 12, 14 and Blowies. It was a shit trade but it wasn’t 3 for Blowies.

not sure he is the answer
need to find another gun mid, either draft or trade and need to find a key defender who can defend and intercept
that should be our goal

Ben King will just be sitting at FF getting a cold if we cant win the ball first then deliver it
we have West coming through , and we will be about 2-3 years off looking like a genuine threat again. time to find that future key back to build our defence around.

next 3-5 years our backline could be

Quaynor McInnes Cochrane
Ryan Silvagni? Parker

hopefully Smit can make it as a genuine key back, was showing some good signs before injury
 
Strangely enough I was juxtaposing our current predicament to another time we had a lot of older players on our list circa 2009-2010.

At that time we had players like O’Bree, Lockyer and Medhurst playing VFL to make way for younger players. Now we have similarly aged players disgruntled and pushing for bigger contracts.
 
Sidebottom form was hot early in the year unfortunately he hasn't been great in back half.

Last year the blokes form wasn't great in the first half of the year.

Why is he a lock for another contract?

Cox, Mitchell, WHE and Sidebottom shouldn't be signed.
 
Pies can't get Butters and aren't confident of Rowell in 2 years then Oliver would be a good option.

Motivated and in a new environment still only 28.

Huge upgrade on Long and Mitchell.

Wouldn't hate it, but not sure he is a huge upgrade on them. Comes with a large salary, if Melb willing to pay a portion of that could be a go.

Our approach this year has to be different than 2 years ago given the aging players.

Do you really think that Fly hasn't got Jaicos as a weapon for finals? Billy was the unplanned, but brilliant tactic Fly had for the GF.
Surprise attacks are normally very effective. Beau to come in, Bobby to come in, Billy F finding his mojo after being in the 2's and so on.

Where's the faith? Where's the hope? Oh that's right, let's just give up and get rid of ALL the old players and become the Roos. Oh and don't get JSOS because we can get better players in the draft 🙄

Oliver? The guy who’s owed $1.4m odd next year and couldn’t kick a behind from 30 out? I don’t have the answer, but I sure as shit know it isn’t a guy 3 years past his prime who has serious issues outside of footy.
