Did they get lucky that we missed our first 6 shots?
It’s like looking at free in the last qtr and saying it cost the game.
Thank you. Sick of the "we shouldn't have won" rhetoric around that game.

We didn't deserve to win and we got lucky they couldn't kick. But somehow they weren't lucky and deserved to win despite our first quarter being a mirror of their 4th.

We were lucky to hold on to the lead. Ok, but we had the lead. Thanks to a dominant early 4th quarter performance.

They were 1-5 and 15th according to the AFL website ladder backdating functionality
Check the 2017 fixtures. They were 0-6.

My mates and I went to Hobart for a boys trip and an easy kill. I can guarantee you that we were 6-0 and they were 0-6. We were also 64 points down at quarter time.

I also checked and Sydney also lost their first 6 matches so they may have been lower on %.

just go into the ladder on afl.com.au and change 2025 to 2017. and change to round 6 and it shows the ladder at the time

They'd won one game and were 15th.

Had Brisbane and Hawthorn on percentage and Sydney hadn't won a game.

Just been watching a few replays of the Howe vs Newcombe

I just found it interesting that Newcombe stopped watching the ball for about the last 3 steps and seems to turn slightly side on to Howe

Missing players like Hill and McCreey who have great leg speed. Howe in defense

Apparently up until a week or so ago were on massive training loads. Might explain why they looked like they were running in mud

Seems late to be doing that though?

McCreery is an interesting one - he only gets 10 or so disposals a game but obviously important from a structure point of view.

Newcombe doesn't take any protective action which I find most interesting. Hasn't elected to bump but probably has the most duty of care given that he was running in the same direction as the ball.

Got stuck into the Larp in Tassie?

Wiped your memory of that weekend.

Yeah, it's an interesting 1 .. this angle in slow-mo doesn't look great

Kind of looks like he actually chose to make front on contact. He had no intention of winning the ball

I recall last night some folk on the main board saying he was trying to tackle. Doesn't much look like it in this footage

To protect himself.

This is the issue with AFL

All through junior Footy you teach kids to protect yourself first. Yes players take their eyes off the ball, to see where other players are. And yes they turn their body to make contact with bum to shoulder or brace themselves.

In this instance Newcombe saw Howe coming and turned to protect himself. If he kep his body open, the incident could have been worse.

Footy accident. Nothing more.

To be clear, I'm not saying he should be sanctioned

I am questioning his motivation - it clearly wasn't the ball based on his last 3-4 steps

Howe instigates contact by going through the contest to win it.

Looks to me like Newcombe caught out at Howe quick Howe is through the contest.

Neither guy trying to hurt the other.

Noticed that too.
Guarantee if it was peatling he'd get 3 weeks
Not saying he SHOULD, Im saying he WOULD

How does this guy pull these facts out? AI?

Pulling the facts out is pretty easy if you've got a database and rudimentary knowledge of how to write a decent query.

The bigger question is where he gets his ideas from, which I assume is a combination of good intuition, following the latest stories, and input from subscribers.

90% of data mining is just about having good instincts for what to search for.
