Buddy And pick 19 was free agency. Not the same situation. Imo free agency comp is silly anyways. I also don’t agree. Adelaide would not just do the deal…
We are talking about what's fair. You arnt guaranteed to get a players worth if they decide to leave.
Theres plenty of clubs who have been stiffed when a player has decided to leave. At Kilda arnt immune to that.

IMHO NAS has the worst manager ever. The guys simply got no idea what he is doing. At this point in the season NAS name plus random wage brackets should be in every paper in the land, especially once the Reid offer came out

If im NAS im not accepting any less then a 8 year 14 mill deal from anyone with 2 years and then a 6 year player option. Both St Kilda and Port have that level of desperation to give him that, especially St Kilda.

The talk of 2 year deals with Saints and 1.1 mill deals with Port Adelaide is absolutely stupid. Feels like Ben Williams is running a charity at this point with Nas donating cash to each club for no reason other then having a terrible manager

If you think Port are only offering 1.1 per year you're severely misinformed.

Its what was offered initially. I imagine its upped. The offer he has now from St Kilda is apparently 2 year 1.4 mill per year deal

That is a absolutely insanely bad contract to sign. If NAS signs that he is a moron. Put in a 6 year player option for sure and push 1.4 into more your 1.8 mill range over the entire deal

There would be a player option attached. Gets reported as a 2 year deal because the option isn't included in the number of years.

Same thing happened with Bergman this year - signed a 2 year deal with a long option. Only reported as a 2 year deal.

sorry port just heard he will sign with saints for 3 years, saints about to up windhager contract to 4 years.
wanganeen was just waiting to see what happens here. announcement be made before season end, just finalising both contracts. heard doesn't want to play port with new coach, and team that isn't stable.

Tuesday?

Ben Williams is one if the most respected managers out there.
What has he done wrong with Nas? You think he should have made him re-sign with St Kilda if he didnt want to? Maybe he should get Nas to announce where he is going while the season is still in play?
He has kept quiet, Nas has kept quiet and the media is inventing stories to sell papers and get clicks over using his client.
Derp

Have you heard of market testing and negotiation.
You've one post suggested you assume it's been upped, and in the next breath that he should push for on from 1.4?
Like what?

I'd say wiliams has played this one very cleverly..he wins no matter what and NWM wins no matter what

How do you know the deal he may sign doesn't?

Just a little note re Nas who I can’t keep thinking about him wearing the tricolours and running around AO in front of a packed house.

Must admit I don’t normally watch too many Saints games but they are compelling viewing right now to see how this young champ performs. The whole industry was left stunned by heroics against Dees and for 4-6 weeks now he is showing he is just an unstoppable force. Great to watch him and love seeing his skills.

Only problem IF he does leave - and most true footy fans I think would actually be happy to see him stay loyal to the Saints as he means so much to them - is the asking price just keeps going up each week. Both his contract $$ and probably length of contract, and what Saints can reasonably expect from any acquiring club to ensure they are compensated in a fair and equitable manner. No doubt in my mind the most expensive and scrutinised trade in AFL history is coming.

Hope both SA clubs are prepared for this!

When Chris Judd was traded he was 18 months older than NWM is now and he was also:

  • Club captain
  • Premiership captain
  • Brownlow medalist
  • Norm Smith medalist
  • Leigh Matthew’s trophy winner
  • 2 x All Australian
  • 2 x club champion
  • AFLPA best first year player
  • 3 x Ross Glendinning medalist

But sure, someone with none of those accolades is going to attract the most expensive trade in AFL history.

Conscious of not wanting to take this thread too off topic here and related issues, so will be succinct.

What happened 20 years ago is almost irrelevant. Look at modern precedents:

  • Shai Bolton 2 first rounders 10 and 11 (with later first round swaps). Bolton is perhaps a 30-50 player in the league. Nas is top 5 and possibly the best projecting forward.
  • Jezza Cameron 3 mid-late first rounders with seconds back to GWS
  • Crows gave up pick 5 for Rankine basically on potential.

The facts are there has been a pronounced recent trend of far better compensation for teams losing elite or high quality players.

Nobody could seriously argue NWM isn’t worth more (much more IMO) than Bolton and Rankine, So add another first rounder to Bolton trade haul and its three firsts, or another first rounder to Rankine and its say pick 5 and pick 10 (assumes mid round pick). OR the chance to trade a high quality youngster and/or proven quality player to reduce the amount of firsts payable. Both SA teams have some players that would fall into these categories - Crows Berry, Edwards or Butts, Power Whitlock, Bergman or Berry.

Clearly I am not trying to play funny buggers here as I would be shooting the crows prospects in the foot. These trade estimations are realistic and need to be factored in when acquiring the best talent since Jezza Cameron. Talking down the quality of the lad and likely compensation isn’t how List Managers are seeing it - I have had that confirmed,

QPower can I please am why the troll laugh. I tried to produce a fair and balanced, certainly 100% respectful and constructive, post and not sure why you are laughing here. Happy to engage with you if fair dinkum but I am not interested in being sidetracked or being involved in trolling related activities. I will ignore further attempts at that.

Cheers

Apart from the inclusion of Bergman I thought it was a good summary.

OK thanks man, I actually really appreciate that.

And you are right. The other players could be worth perhaps one first rounder as part of compo (ie meaning that player and 2 x firsts still required for Nas) whereas Bergman is next level and would be worth perhaps closer to 2 x first rounders himself (meaning Berg and only 1 x first rounder required)

Is this roughly how you see it?

essendon trades their 2 first rounds (5, 6 depending on tarades) to port for butters, maybe chuck in future GOAT elijah tsatas as a sweetener, and then port will have the capital to trade for NWM, maybe with something to make the deal juicier

More or less, yeah. I doubt Bergman would be part of any trade given the contract he’s on. Stranger things have happened though.

keeping it on topic, I see no evidence of inflationary pressures in the player trade market that you assert.

Shai Bolton had 4 years left on a contract Richmond and there is generally a steep premium to be paid for a contracted player and this is what played out in his case.

Rankine merely retained his value.

Jeremy Cameron was much more decorated at the time he was traded than NWM is now and there is generally a premium to be paid for key forwards in trade capital.

I see NWM as a very good player, but the hyperbole evident in assessing his value isn’t supported by the evidence.
