The rhetoric around West Coast poorly trading is very smoke and mirrors.

Drafting poorly? A different story. We drafted awfully, but so much of the draft is good or bad fortune at the best of times. St Kilda have for years, Essendon have for years. Richmond and Fremantle were notorious for it for a long time.

Trading though, taking away the Kelly trade which is something of an optical illusion, have we really traded out that much capital? No.

So Willem Duursma was serviceable for Casey Demons today at VFL. Good signs to be pick 1.

No thanks. Not at 1.
Could be good, could be great. Not at 1. A split 2, sure. Mitigate the boom or bust risk.

Could always find a place for Ginbey, he’s one of the team’s mainstays.

Absolutely. Top 5 player in the team this year. Career defender if we want him to play where he is most comfortable.

The problem is really that Duggan and Cole are in the back 6. There is room for Ginbey and Hough plus all of McCarthy, Bazzo, Edwards and Brock. But we can't have that back 6 unless we move those 2 2018 legacy players. And we can't move them because we have other similarly limited players clogging up space where we could potentially move them to. With some luck Cole will be delisted or traded, and Duggan will find a radically different role outside of defence. Because as of right now I think the back 6 that we need to immediately solidify around is this:

McCarthy, Brock, Hough.
Ginbey, Edwards, Bazzo.

Now maybe in time a 2025 draftee or Dewar or Allan goes in there and one of Bazzo or Brock or Edwards washes out as the team transitions to top 2-4, and maybe Hough does have a higher purpose as a defensive mid instead of a lockdown seal defender, but we are killing ourselves right now putting games into Duggo and Cole who just aren't going to be there and already are the 2 weakest links in that mix.

Well in fairness to Goroyals22 the selection of Golden Showers before Duncan was a real head scratcher - a massive WTF pick.

In fact, I remember throwing the TV remote across the room accompanied by multiple very loud profanities echoing through the house, when the pick was announced.

Wasn't the worst example of me losing my shit on Draft Day that went to 1997 National Draft Day, when after taking Jaxon Crabb, Callum Chambers and then Rowan Jones with picks 12, 13 and 28.

Then at pick 34 I was screaming out this players name ( name coming ) and then we called out Andrew Williams - not happy.

Then three picks latter at 37 I was thinking time for redemption ( I was yelling his name out once more ) and then we called out Todd Holmes .

I was distraught when the player that who's name I had been screaming out then went with pick 43 .

Adam Goodes.

We took David Antonowitz wt the next pick 44.

Let's just say that Mrs Monocle was not at all happy with the carry on.
I was called infantile and in the dog house for a few days ... and yes I did have to replace the damaged coffee table.
How does one know who we wanted to draft before we even had the internet!

Lo and behold and this might surprise you, but the old fashion way, by going to watch the games live, also helped that I coached in the system.

Was able to send my notes to friends either by carrier pigeon or telegram.

You young dudes aren't quite as dedicated as us old timers who watched hours of live football to assist us in rating players.

Let me phrase it like this.

Had we kept pick 3 and taken FOS, would that make this year's PP claim any more or less valid?

I don't think so.
Well the narrative wouldve been that the eagles haven't done enough to bring more talent into the club.
We're in a no win situation these days

Then recruit him solely as a coach. Don’t waste anything on him as a player.
if we get a bunch of extra list spaces and can put Duncan on a 2 year DFA contract to play the odd game of afl if needed , play Beagles as on field leadership and be a development coach all whilst not having to pay into the soft cap as he is on the rookie list .

He has to be a DFA or pick 85 . Would hate to give Geelong anything of value for him.

season 7 eating GIF

Well catching up on that was a ride.

Re Duncan, we shouldn't be going there, even with more list spots. The ONLY reason to go down that path with him as a player is for him to play Beagles on an AFL salary. Even then, I would rather attempt to use those funds to lure players who will contribute.

I must be the only one not yet impressed by Gross. Hope be turns into a gun

Kid needs to bulk up and build his endurance.

No questions about his intent and competitive nature, decent skills and quick. Didnt take long to earn a contract extension.

Was touted as a late 1st rounder and slid. Would be our best mid in the WAFL side in his 1st year.

The way to approach Duncan as a player / coach is a pick up in the SSP or midseason draft 2nd pick.

We wait until Feb 21, if an injury opens up a spot bring him in. If two LTI's exist mid seas9n 2026 bring him on.

He can play WAFL at any stage.

Do not burn a list spot pre draft on Duncan. We CAN " have our cake and eat it too".

We do not need Duncan round 1 2026. He can help in many other ways. IE play for Beagles, be a 2nd pick in the MSD on a 6 month contract.

O/k we know we F***** up our last few drafts, all that matters now is this years draft.
What positional players do we need.
Forward line appears to be O/K,
Mids when all fit is O/k, 2 more mids
I'm happy they gave Barnett another year or so he may suprise everyone, has the right attitude whether that equates to a AFL ruck is yet to be decided. Possibly a 24-26 old ruck is required.
Backs need at least 2 more above average backmen.
At the end of all that ?
2 mids, 2 backs, 1 ruck
Thoughts
What do you think about a late bid on Kalani White, who could nominate GC?

Can't see any other tall key backs
