Review R22: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. West Coast Eagles

I don’t get why some on here claim guys like Burgess, Scholl and Borlase are good depth. Whenever they actually play they are way out of their depth.

We really don't have much depth. We are bassically all in with our best 23.
Do you reckon any team in the AFL is able to roll out their 5th string key position players and have them suddenly play as A graders? Borlase is 5th in the KPD stocks and Burgess is behind Toby Murray, but his injury has meant we’ve been cautious with him.

Our depth is fine in the regular season but of course we are going to need most of our top liners to win the flag, that’s the luck you need at this time of year. Thankfully, MM and Rachele should hopefully be back for finals.

Rankine's first half was terrible, agreed.

His second half was immense. 20 touches and a goal is a massive half in anyone's language.
His 2nd half was out of this world! That’s as good as I’ve seen him play as a midfielder while still impacting on the scoreboard. He had Dawson going with him, but Rankine was definitely trying to lift the side and spark them.

Apologise for what?

Forming my own opinion after a block of games instead of just deciding your bs was gospel?

The last few games he hasnt done a lot wrong, he's been hard at it and could do a job. Tonight was a good opportunity and he didnt take it. On a body of a month you could probably say you'd rather want someone else there.

You're desperate for my respect or something strange. Why are you trying to score an apology? Unless you can quote me saying Jones was amazing or something.
There was no bs, you said he had a role and took offence that one would question you as to what it was? (Gold Coast game)
Had you just answered normally without getting so high and mighty there’d have been no issue from me.
I watched the replay and provided my observations which contradicted what was largely spread as gospel about him having a hard tag.
So excuse me if I point out when your opinion lines up with mine after getting so sour about it the first time.
Not sure why you think I’d want your respect?

To be fair their backs scragged like anything today, how filthy didn’t get any frees in the first qtr was a joke Gineby loved a scrag.
Darcy would have had 6
We couldn't buy a free inside forward-50. Thilthorpe was blatantly dragged down to the ground by one arm in a marking contest by Ginbey in the third quarter. Moments later, he gets bumped in the face. Four umpires out there somehow see neither of them.

For all the shit Burgess copped (and I agree that we shouldn't have played him) in the gameday thread for not converting his chance in the fourth running into an open goal, he was very, very blatantly held without a whistle.

Not much went right for us today, but we came away without any major injuries and with the four points. Previous Crows teams would have lost this game. On to next week!

It feels like a lot of posters are overlooking just how good a pressure game the Eagles played. They did not let up for 4 quarters.
Absolutely. Not saying we were fully switched on - but the Eagles pressure at times was ridiculous. Not that I put much in the champion data pressure rating but last quarter Eagles were at 232. I don’t think I have seen it that high before. It was grit from a handful and class from a handful got us over the line - once again winning in a different way

Our depth is really poor in the KPF and ruck but been able to cover Rachele and MM for extend weeks and Butts is the KPD "depth" and Sholl has been overtaken by Dowling.

Is it a harbinger to have a scoreless quarter against one of the worst teams in footy history?

Or is it just one of those days?

At this point, it's just one of those days.

Hard to perform well when you've got 9 players on the field underperforming, seven of whom are running at under half capacity

(Excluding Burgess who played his first of the season, and Peatling who was injured)
That all looks alright, didn’t think cumming was that bad though.

Good
West Coast. Deserved to win. Went harder than us all day, set up beautifully.
Taylor
Peds had 3
Winners late - TT, Rankine, Keane

Bad
Effort- a step behind all day, couldn’t win a contest to my eye
Keays - bad touch all day
ROB - soundly beaten. Is Flynn good?
Bond - sorry, but I’m pessimistic, can’t be relied on when he has the ball.
Jones did nothing in a half
Curtin mostly invisible

Ugly
Lots of bathwater was drunk. Most of all by our coaches. 3 talls is precarious. It works because of the personnel, not because the system is genius. Burgess is not up to it, and the forward line looked dysfunctional. I hope they have learned - we need a plan B. Dawson? Curtin? 2 talls?
In terms of the ugly surely the bottom team is the side to try something against? And Burgess poor game was as much on those afield as himself

It was obvious at the ground that the players should have been kicking through Curtin. In one instance he was open but instead they popped it onto Taylor's head up forward with a guy on him.

Curtin was frustrated today and you could understand why. We look much better when we play through him

I’d say that’s the second bad game of footy we have played all year.

Still got the four points so I say we just forget it and move on. Better to have a bad game now then in four weeks time.

Key takeaways:

Izak is still a gun midfielder when we need him to be.
Taylor is a guy worth persisting with.
Thilthorpe has that dog in him.
Burgess was a strange selection when I first saw it and I’m still confused by it. It would have been the perfect opportunity to trial a two KPF structure, and instead we handed a game to a guy on the delist pile who struggled to impact.

Nicks: "It felt like we lost"

Might’ve been "the loss that we had to have" but we got 4 points for it.
A “felt like we lost” win is better than the old “felt like we won” loss that we are oh so familiar with.

It looked to me we lost our heads in that second quarter. Had no answers despite having had the chance to regroup at QT.

Fair enoug, but look at the second half - we kept going and didn't let it totally slip.

I was also shocked at the stats, did not realise how comfortably we beat them all over the ground aside from the score.

I'm glad this wasn't week one of the finals, that was a lazy arrogant performance. Burgess was a total liability.
If that was first week of finals, we’d have just booked ourselves a home prelim. Take it any way you can!

I want to give Balme selection vetoe call next season.

Nicks: "Murphy's in this week."
Balme: "No."

Nicks: "What about Burgess"
Balme: "No"

Nicks: "Jo.."
Balme: "Hangs up"

Balme selects Murphy and Burgess when needed.

We don't select differently in any way shape or form to the rest of the league. The league doesn't give a shit about the future and is completely obsessed with structure.
