So what. It's a false equivalent. We don't have access to them anyway.

It is still 5 6 in available players to all the clubs
wouldn't pick 5 and 6 be getting the 9th and 10th rated players in the draft after bids ?

Just because we cant bid on those players doesn't mean we don't get shafted on acquiring the best rated talent .

Saints have been sitting on 95%cap for years .

Unfortunately not being a big vic club it's hard to attract talent without paying overs .

Losing NAS would be a kick in the teeth.

No idea how port or crows would get a deal done . Future picks and future/future picks in the highly compromised drafts would have little value .

Watch port try and get 8 teams involved to pay for their player like they did with Horne Francis
You'd think the merry go round would be Butters (third team) - NAS (Port) - Third Team Assets (Saints)

True however it comes into consideration with pick swaps.

Especially when comparing pick swaps from previous drafts not so compromised.

Pick 2 we traded for pick 8 and 12 that slid to 9 and 14.

Pick 1 we trade for 5 and 6 and they slide to 9 and 11?

Pick 1 doesn't slide.

So it is a factor. The above indicates that something else needs to be added. We should get a better deal for pick 1 than pick 2.

If 8 of the 1st 10 top kids were unavailable would you trade pick 1 for 5 and 6 in the same draft? No you wouldn't.

don't all teams have to sit on at least 90% of the salary cap?
if saints can't keep NAS its further proof that the system is broken,
I seriously don't see what the point of them being there is if they can't retain, they just a feeder team to 'big vic'

So again, you pay penalty somewhere else, to gain somewhere else. At best it’s a draw while others prioritise the most elite talent first because after all, that is harder to get.

No downgrading. Package things up if possible but that’s it.

If duursma was west Australian, place would be torn down at a thought of such downgrades.

If we can extract overs for pick 1 and land 5, and 6 we should do it.

Assuming we hold pick 2.

Duursma v Two of Cumming, Sharp or whoever we rate higher.

No brainer IMO.

All depends if we rate Duursma as highly as Essendon does.

If we do then pick him.

If we don't then extract maximum value.

do people think busslinger is a better user than maric ?

Because they are basically the same size and both have the same problem in they are not very good defenders yet
Busslinger is not a better kick but he's definitely bigger and better overhead. Is much more likely to end up an AFL KPD than Maric.

Explain how you are disadvantaged in any way to a draft where all 10 of a top 10 are available for selection.

1 for 5 6 gives you the 5th and 6th best AVAILABLE talent regardless.

An another example would be, has there been 5 NGA FS kids ahead of our picks in 2022 we still would've got Hewett and ginbey with our picks. Not an iota bit of difference.

1 for 5 6 this year means 4 Available selections will go before, regardless of how many bids happen prior. For all you know, however unlikely, Essendon WC and tigers have secret agreements not to bid on the 3 kids for Suns Lions, and all 6 of the first 6 picks are open draftee candidates.

I thought it was Reid’s management that put the $24 mill over 11 years on the table not the Eagles?
So what would St Kilda offer in a trade for Ried, with NAS and without NAS, and if this was true wouldn't we be talking to Richmond and Essendon to at least leverage trade numbers ?

It does sound like a Conner Sports rumour to get the Eagles to $24m.

We do have access to them. Someone else just takes them away

If we bid on Annable at pick 1, he becomes pick 1 when Brisbane match. He doesnt disappear and become pick nothing.

I'd avoid trading with Essendon at all costs - Rosa will still have the stink of Dodoro around him.

Just target the GC pick ~7 with a few of our 2nds. Alternatively trade pick 2 for 7 and next year's GC first, or Walter, or something along those lines.

Sharp (1), Cumming / Lindsay (7) and Walter. Or Sharp, Duursma and Cumming / Lindsay

A KPD or Ruck at Hawks first and then whoever slides at the first pick of day 2.

This logic has been debunked time and time again.

Strong Academy picks make opposition teams better
Better opposition teams reduce Eagles' expected wins from draftees
Reduced expected wins from draftees means our draft hand was compromised by Academy picks

TLDR: You're adding potential superstars to the League that Academy clubs have a last right of refusal to draft (on superior terms)

Well we got wooden spoon 2023 and pick 1 gold coast have 5 academy picks north have 2 priority along with dfa compo along with 4 other academiea father sons thrown in there and our pick 19 becomes 30 .
Yeah our draft hand isnt compromised . Its our own fault our rebuild is crap my foot.

As much as bringing in busslinger would add to out KPD stocks would he be getting a game over Edwards or brock ?

Edward is the clear number 1 of our KPDs and now has the size to not be out bodied by the big forwards.

Brock has been a real surprise packet for me this year . He is very fast and athletic for a guy 198cms . He is also a very good defender doing some fantastic shutdown roles this year even under a torrent of inside 50s . He also has a lovely long flat left foot kick on him .

I really feel our key defender stocks are not as bad as people make out .

Sure they are young and need games but if you add both maric and bazzo as 3rd tall intercept types we have a good unit forming .

Then you have Archer who could probably find a spot as a key back , key forward or ruck going into next year .

Any draft capital we would have to use to get busslinger i would rather allocate fixing our dreadful midfield.

Unless its a straight swap for duggan

Personally can’t see how the Saints could afford all of NAS,TDK and Reid on some of the figures being floated around. It’s around $6 mill of there salary cap on 3 players. 18.6 mill cap remember so that’s 1/3 of your cap on 3 players. It’s rubbish.

Eagles need to hold there nerve and get Harley for what we can afford or get what we can in exchange.

Harley is a very special talent but you don’t sell the farm for one player, especially one that’s still finding his way at AFL level and hasn’t shown yet that he’s a true AFL professional in his second year.

Reid has a chance of being generational or at least an elite player if he becomes elite in his preparation in all aspects of being an afl footballer. Has he got that determination, drive and commitment to this side of being a professional?

The reported contracts will limit what other levers we can pull once we need to top up our rebuild. Surely even Reid’s management know that if Harley wants team success that his contract can’t be an anchor around the clubs neck weighing it’s list down.

I think the club needs to have a price that you’re prepared to pay having looked at and taken account of all the risks that come with such deals. If he wants more let him walk.

If Harley does leave I think it’s got to be a minimum of one top 5 pick, one top 10 pick and a f1 especially if the contract is for somewhere near the reported figures.

95% is the salary floor and you can over load it to 105% if you bank it from the previous year. Should be 90% with an over load of 110% means teams down the bottom could actually bank cap space to chase players

is devon robertson worth a try? he's still a good player, just cant become a regular player at brisbane
100% as a delisted free agent if we have expanded list spots . He would be great for the beagles .

From Brisbane I would much rather tunstill who is also out of contract.

Tunstill has the same ball winning ability as dev but is far more agile and fast on the spread . Better kick too

It about the value you are swapping pick 1 for compared to other drafts.

Pick 1 in a non compromised draft could be traded for with 5 and 20. All good.

But in another draft that is compromised that pick 5 ends up pick 10 and 20 becomes 30 then it's a dud deal.

Something else needs to be added.

Pick 1 is pick 1. The quality of the player ranked pick 1 also a factor.

Why give up a diamond for access to players ranked 10 + and 30+.

So how much the level a draft is compromised does effect what you would accept for pick 1 or 2.

It sounds more like an idiot who read the article about St Kilda simultaneously having a mass exodus and a war-chest recruiting drive decided to throw Harley in there with a vaguely 'sounds better' offer from the Saints to add a bit more legs to the story.

...and Tim Watson has the scoop?

It's tough for the old guys to break anything these days - guys like Watson and Rucci are at home waiting by the fax machine for the latest gossip and just run with anything that comes through.

Given the scarcity of lists spots this year it’s a pass for me. He doesn’t move the needle enough.

Meme aside, I'd only be looking at him as an SSP if he's delisted and we get to pre-season with a free list/rookie spot

I do however think we need a strong body inside mid on the fringes, our WAFL team gets smashed through the middle and there's no selection pressure on our inside mids this year

Murdock would be the one I'd look at with our first round rookie selection
