The forward line is stagnant. Too many players are either flat footed or flying for marks instead of crumbing to the big guys. Shanahan and Reid looked better than any other combination we've had this year, which is terrible.

The backs most certainly aren't a rabble. Given a chance to defend, they're pretty bloody good for what we have down there at the minute. But too often, teams turn the ball over at half forward or the midfield and put out defense under pressure. Our midfield has a lot of work to do, particularly defensively.
Would Liam Ryan score more goals as a crumbing forward or flying for high marks ?
The last 2 really good ones we had were Lecras and Phillip Matera.

A crumbing forward, easily. Don't get me wrong, Ryan excels as a full forward despite his size. But that is not his role with us. He (and Harley for that matter) would be better off staying down, letting the talls do their thing, and using their skills and agility to score or set up goals.

When the talls are out of position, that's when they fly.

Wonder if Hinkley wants a fresh start in WA?
Hinkley would be a great addition but perhaps a little premature for us? We need solid development coaches now. Hinkley seems like the kind of coach we would want in a couple of years' time.

Schofield is supposedly leaving to go back to Port and Worsfold isn't an assistant coach.
A bunch of untried players who want to be coaches but have no experience other than playing is not necessarily what we need right now.
We need someone who has a proven ability to develop young players and we need someone with a strong tactical mind. Unlikely to get that from a guy fresh into the role.
I'm not against bringing in someone who's just finished playing but we also need some guys who've actually coached before as well
From what I heard Schofield turned down the job at Port and still has a year on his contract in any event so think he will still be with us for 2026.

But did the right thing in going to "another club" to cut his teeth in a coaching role before heading off to greener pastures.

IMHO we should have done the same with a few ex-players instead of parachuting them into assistant coach roles at the club. Coaching staff should be drawn from "the best available" from across the league, not from blokes who were wearing your club's playing jumper 12 months prior.
I think attracting ex players into a coaching role and to come West is not as easy as it sounds, particularly should they have young families.

This is why we will need to overspend on the soft cap. Now (I think) simmos extra million is payed up, we should go over the cap half a mill or more and pay the fines. pay assistant coaches 100k over normal rates and I recon that might entice a couple. Offer 300k for a head of development and see who manager calls us.

Even if we went a mill over each year for the next 5 yrs, Harley jumper sales will cover it.

Not this again. Lookup the way the taxes work for going over the cap, from memory, they get progressively higher each year you're over (I think up to 250%). So if you spend $1M over, by year three you might be paying a penalty of $2.5M on top of that $1M. There is no way the owners of the Eagles (WAFC) would let that happen.

From memory didn't the severity of it significantly diminish? I can't find any document that highlights the actually numbers, so you might be right.

Blues look to be loading up to support Voss.

Our problem with that right now is our forward talls are either new and inexperienced or not very good.

If we had Oscar in that forward line flying for everything Ryan or whoever could probably afford to focus purely on ground level stuff, but that's not the case unfortunately.
Even next year with Waterman back, hes not really a flyer like Allen
