My unpopular option is disagreeing with people who say the current talent pool is too shallow.

Australia's population has grown significantly, the AFL is making significant headlands in Queensland and NSW.

Looking also at the mid-season draft, there are plenty of players out there performing at least replacement-level in the AFL, with some better than that - Tom McCarthy as an example.
Yep, and junior footy participation and standards are at an all-time high.

It's just that there's also a higher attrition rate beyond Under 16's than there used to be last century, resulting in the significant decline of country/suburban senior clubs.

But that's pretty much irrelevant to the AFL-trajectory programs, as the elite talent has largely been identified and inducted by that age.

Shortest honeymoon period ever.

Nah. If you were going to contract, you cut the Dees, Saints, and Roos.

Dogs to Canberra, sets up a great rivalry with the Giants. Tassie Devils come in.

Back to 16 teams.

But the only good reason there’s ever been against expansion is the talent pool, not just of players, but coaches and staff.

I couldn’t give a toss about the difficulty in winning a flag.

As I’ve said before, it didn’t make jack shit difference to a third of the Vic clubs when it was just a 12 team VFL.

The AFL won't go backwards in number of teams because (a) it's logistically hard to do, and (b) casshhhh. More money from 9 games vs 8.

I also don't think a world exists where you 'kick out' the Dees.

Yeah, they’ve already said we’re going to 20 teams if Tasmania gets that stadium done.

Given the Devils tried to crowbar their way into the AFL, the AFL weren’t keen on expanding past 18 teams.

Unless someone else tries to push their way into the AFL, they could stay on 20 teams for another 50 years or so.

I don’t think the AFL would give a shit about expanding anywhere other than NSW and QLD in the far future.

NT, ACT and WA3 better fight tooth and nail for licence 20 because fat chance any of them get another look in after that.

It could be shut up shop.

He might be a great bloke and an outstanding footballer, but Max Gawn gets off far too lightly as captain.

He needs to take some of the blame for their cultural issues and guys like May, Oliver and Smith going off the rails.

Meanwhile Tex copped it from everywhere as we were imploding post GF loss and after the camp (while our club admin went into hiding).

The Tex/Sloane handling of the camp saga is a separate discussion.

However, my gut feel is that Gawn has done absolutely everything he can to hold that group together, but a captain can only do so much.

The list of blemishes on Melbourne in the past few years that would have impacted culture is an extensive one. A lot of them would be areas that Gawn has zero control over.

Very Unpopular : The 'SHERRIN' football is a crap ball, it's too hard to control, deviates to much in the air and on the ground, creates too many fumbles/mistakes and should be ditched for something else
Is this just sherrin footballs or aussie rules footies in general?

When a team receives a free kick, any player on that team should be able to take it.

Yes, it would impact stats and goalkicking numbers, but who cares?
I like this. Has always annoyed me when the full forward gets a free kick 70 out and then doesn't have a target inside 50 to kick to.

From the outside Melbourne look like they have/had issues at board/exec level, coach level and player level. Not sure what big Max can do about the club having a CEO that doesn't start until September.
Captain/Coach/CEO/President - come on Maxxy, stop sitting on your ass and just run the club already :p

What brand would you recommend instead?

I’ve played a game or two with a burley football and the sherrin is much better. What other Australian rules ball makers are out there?

It would greatly dilute all of the goalkicking records.

And destroy Supercoach etc.

I don't even like it in soccer - I've always thought that the player infringed in the penalty box should take the spot kick.

It's not for me.

I agree. Generally in footy you have to earn a free kick. The player who earns the free kick should be the one who kicks it.
