I didn't realise that Schoernberg didn't even effing play SANFL last week...

That’s not really an issue. Last week Schoey was ahead of Dowling in the order, he was selected as travelling emergency, so was next player in. Dowling’s game could have elevated him above the higher ranked non-playing emergency, but it’s a coin toss at selection.

I genuinely want to know from Nicks what he thinks Murphy brings to the table as a small forward.
Can’t be the amount of ball he gets.
Can’t be the amount of goals he kicks.
Can’t be his pressure and tackle count.

Maybe it’s the way he jumps into marking contests kamikaze style and spoils our talls, instead of being front and centre to sweep up the loose ball?
Or, maybe it’s the way he runs full pelt at the ball when going for an easy mark to then watch the ball bounce right off his chest, causing a turn over?

Those two things are literally the only things he will contribute to a game of football, so Nicks is obviously a big fan of those things.

Maybe Nicks just enjoys watching him try and kick around his body and his little legs can't kick it further than 25 metres.

You have to laugh at BACCS. No posts in the changes thread until after selection. I guess he learned from his ‘even I’ll melt if Frampton is selected’ 15 minute ‘no, it’s a good call’ turnaround. Not only clueless, but weak as well.
And then whinge because we aren’t “positive” and then threatens not to post again, “oh no, not that!”

It just feels pointless worrying about one selection when it has no bearing on this result (only Rachele being available would make an actual difference) and one or both of Rachele and Pedlar will be fit by the first final. Pedlar until last week had been offering very little for most of the season too, so I don’t think there’s going to be a huge difference in output.

You don't think Murphy doing absolutely nothing in the 4th quarter of the Gold Coast game impacted us losing by a solitary point?

Murph's problem this year has been he's hit that point that all role players will eventually face. When they can't keep up to the changing needs of a squad. You can see it in his game, where he's doubling down on everything that got him to 100 games and is now getting him into strife. He's hitting contests with reckless abandon and getting in the way of our guns, he's getting squeezed out despite his gut running etc. Admittedly I'm not for this selection, but it's more because it's pointless; this is a lad who needs love and we won't show it to him. Here we'll get another nothing performance and Cook will be back for a 0 disposal performance in a qualifying final. There is no point getting angry about it, as long as we've realised we need more small forwards.
This is what is upsetting people the most, we have Dowling, Sholl, Crouch, Draper, Cook, Edwards etc sort of waiting in the wings not getting a shot.

I get the Murphy selection in a sense, its structural and none of those guys are forwards to replace Pedlar.

Agree with Jones for Schoenberg. Actually think we gain a little something.

Disagree with Cook for Murphy. Cook is a non entity and doesn't get the ball much at all. At least if he manages to get his hands on it he uses it really well. The issue with Murphy is that he is a net negative. He is a panic merchant who turns the ball over constantly, he is one of the dumbest footballers (footy IQ) I have ever seen. He constantly gets in the way of our good forwards and cannons into them.

It's just astounding we go with a player that has been dropped 3 times already this season who just doesn't have a high ceiling even when in form.
What news for you to wake up to

Considering it's the same selection policy that has us in 1st, it might not be dumb. More to the point, it's no different to how anyone else selects. They all have whipping boys and kids who are being ignored.

Mind you, I would have selected Sid at round 6 and completely abandoned getting anything out of this role.

You hit the nail on the head. Murphy will try hard, he'll win a few contests (ground ball gets are a magical stat to have), you can trust him to put his body on the line and he's trained as a small forward. That's it. You're just at the point of the lineup where that's enough.

Neal-Bullen has proven to be the Murph killer. Now we're just in the final phase of his career, selected because we need a body.

And yet, the kids with star factor have been developed well. Curtin breakout this year indicates we're locked in with our development at the moment.

Matty may just have a good knack for picking who is worthwhile and who isn't. Or more likely, it's a lot easier than we think, and you don't need to play them in the AFL to work it out*.

* And no doubt we'll see Sid after a preseason.

If you think we're relying on talent, you're an awful judge of football.

We're 1st in effectively every defensive metric (preventing transition/marks inside 50 etc) and scoring off intercepts. So, every system metric, we are lights out right now. We are top of the table, because our system is ****ing fantastic and it's effectively built off what we did in 2022/2023.

Nicks is a system coach and has been from day one. He just now has the list for it.

he only got to 100 games due to Nicks blind refusal to play anyone else and thats it. Cant double down on something you dont do.

The shock, you get it, of course you do.

News flash, Murphy’s not a forward either, doesn’t matter that’s where he lines up. 0 goals in 4 games, 1 goal assist.

We have a number of players who could play that role including Cook, Nank, Draper.

By kicking along the ground he makes it very difficult for opposition intercept markers

I’m normally one to back the coaches as they often have roles and structure in mind when selecting the team. But I just don’t get it with Murphy.

In his last game he was a net negative. 2 turnovers in 3 touches and nearly injured 2 of his team mates flying for marks as a 175cm player.

His games before that were massively underwhelming at best.

Burgess was bad last week, but he wasn’t a net negative. Murphy has shown repeatedly now that he’s not the answer, no matter the question.

There is only one phrase to describe Murphys selection.

Reach Around!

Not missing the point at all.

How about actually addressing the selection of Murphy, good, bad or downright idiotic and consistent with previous idiotic selections pre Davis?
I won’t lie, I don’t ever recall a game where Murphy has ever made me feel “we gotta quickly sign this guy up!” But you know if he was being picked over Rachele, I would probably be irritated. And obviously the coaches believe they are picking the best team to defeat Collingwood and they have better credentials at coaching than I do. So I’m not going to get upset by it.
