I've always believed that free agency, academy picks and F/S picks should be restricted based on a team's finishing position the prior year. E.g. top 4 placed clubs do not get a discount or cannot match a bid on a academy or F/S pick in the top 10.

The secret herbs and spices should also be abolished or reduced to limit free agency compensation for players who depart top 4/8 sides.

It's absurd that the reigning premier can get the wooden spooner's captain for free. I was frustrated when Hawthorn took full advantage of the system in the 10's and I can understand other fan's frustration now.

A flat ban on picks inside the first round is reactionary IMO.
AFL had the "if you're top 4, you can take only one player in first round" limit.
And they threw it away along with recent NGA change. Totally dumb.

In principle I agree with what you say. That said, the AFL competition is so unevern and significantly slanted in favour of victorian teams. Until that is fixed, the Northern Clubs and even other interstate teams need some kind of advantage to keep them competitive in the long term. You dont provide them some sort of help and you may as well scrap the national competition.

Hopefully this is a way of testing fan response by ‘leaking’ it early but I don’t believe the current AFL leadership is that smart.

From a broader business sense I dont see how banning bid matches in the first round helps the AFL sell itself more. There is a lot of intrigue that happens around pick trading and bid matches that generate a lot of discussion. People follow the lead up to a draft closer knowing a certain player is likely to end up their club. Not to mention all the trades that happen between clubs that would not happen because they cannot generate points for the draft. It will make the draft boring.

Caro said on Agenda Setters earlier that whatever meeting had with all club representatives today that as of next year, Father / Son and Academy selections will be abolished from the first round of the draft.

What an over-reaction. I mean, provided clubs pay up, why get rid of them. I honestly can't believe the AFL has fallen for St Kilda's whingeing.

Swanns off to a great start - excuse my sarcasm.
I think when they are talking about the acadamies I think they mean the pga's, I am sure Swann said that the northern acadamies are too important to dilute but I guess we will have to wait and see.

I think free agency was part of a CBA bargaining. It was player driven

Fair if you end up paying the exact amount for first rounders, but if Greg Swann removes our ability to draft an acadamy player in the top 10, then he's a traitorous knob who can go and get ****ed. And i hope the lions tell the AFL that they can get ****ed too and close the academy. That alone would probably make them change their minds.

Its not Swann's fault, but he said a lot of things, probably thinking many of these things would be his decision, yet to me at least, the reality seems to be that since he's now got into the role, his personal views are becoming largely irrelevant.

I just find it nonsensical that clubs can't take F/S or Academy picks in the first round. As I said last night, every year it has been watered down and now with only a small discount, the AFL in all their wisdom aren't even letting this decision sit for a couple of years ago.

What to all appease some pissant of a club in St Kilda?
It's not just St Kilda, Fremantle have been going all guns blazing to the AFL commission as well. Surely they know that if there is no benefit to the northern clubs then the academies would shut down and with it the biggest growth corridor in the country would also collapse.

They wont shut down the academy's. Too much talent comes out of them to shut them down. The AFL might be money grabbers but they are not dumbarse's.

It must be a bit disconcerting for St Kilda if these changes are made. They'll have to figure out entirely new excuses to feed their membership base as to why they can never compete and are always downtrodden.

Snoop Dogg for GF entertainment? Not clarifying draft rules until like the day before last year and now this? I think they might be.

Of course the AFL won’t shut them down but the clubs would certainly consider pulling funding from their academies. (Especially Nothern Academies)
They would be silly not to, considering the best talent could go to other clubs, why put the money into them when you will just once again become a feeder club.

Cats coming out against F/S and Academies when they've already won 4 flags off the back of them is a masterstroke. They know even less can compete against their Cotton On rorts if there aren't equal rorts on the other side.

I dont think the funding would be a problem for the AFL to pick up 100%...negligable costs really.

People call Trump dumb but he is not dumb. Dispicable human being, grub, dirty dog and many other names but not dumb. There is a difference.
They would have done a lot of research into who is best for the GF entertainment. Snoop Dog is not for me and probably for a lot of others in my age group but the AFL would have looked at the demographic they are trying to reach and I am sure Snoop would have ticked all the boxes.

Syd academy brings in at least $1m in sponsorship (QBE). Don't see the AFL picking up that funding gap.

I beg to differ, they are reactionary and the epitome of dumbarse's

Saints whinging really started up in the last few years, not at all when the Cats were benefiting. I don't recall them whinging about Daicos either?

Stalking horse for better and bigger Vic clubs, will not improve their chances of competing at all.

Including the words in his lyrics that the AFL is suspending players for using, Dumbarse's

Yes, they do the bidding of the clubs that have continually kept them down. Its a sad and destructive cycle the mighty Sainters are in.
