No he not strong enough against VFL rucks much less AFL. Rucks target his midrift and he folds like a deck of cards.

You should be in your physical peak at 24, but he only gets marginally stronger each year.
OHB looked better than Ryan in the wildcard on the weekend .... OHB starting to look like he will be playing AFL football next year ... for Ryan's size his peak is likely to be when he is 26 ... but this big giraffe is contracted so really it's a moot point ...

Yes I've also been critical of OHB for the same reason as Ryan, not strong enough through the core, but he was noticeably better on the weekend.

Seems to have worked on his footwork and how to brace against the contact because he looked balanced and even a bit agile. Right now if nank was injured OHB would be our next in line, and with another preseason under his belt, you would think quite a good way ahead come rd.1.

And I’m sure if Lalor, Smillie, Faull, McAullife, Juddy Clarke, Gray etc… weren’t injured we’d have had a younger team than them.
Who's in our best 22 next year according to our coaches?

By my reckoning it'd be the same as our list at EOY except we'd replace Armstrong, Trezise, Kmac with Faull, Clarke, Lalor. Maybe Smillie in for Sonsie but no guarantee given how slow coaches have been to add in midfielders. I think Ross should be replaced with Kmac2 but from what we've seen our coaches don't agree.

In short, it wouldn't make a huge difference. If Kmac is our only retiree and we always play guys like Prestia, Lynch, Short, Broad, etc. then we're going to be even older next year than we are this year. The only rebuild where the team generally gets older over time (we're playing teams older than the team that won the GF in 2017, and it hasn't gotten much younger over the last few years).

We only have two draft picks at this stage so we will have to do a bit of footwork and get another couple of picks but can't see more than that. Rookies also, but getting rid of players in our bottom 6 like Hugo/Sonsie/Dow is probably not going to happen.

The ones most in the spotlight:
Bauer - not up to standard - Gone you'd think
blight - surplus to need - Gone you'd think
Colina - failed - Gone you'd think
Smith - hasn't shown enough - Gone you'd think - might scrape in

Fawcett - other younger KPFs look better - might be lucky but coming from a fair way back
Kozi - not good enough - if not contracted Gone you'd think
Lefau - wrong age, better playing younger KPFs - might be lucky because he has shown he can play at the level
Ryan - laughable - has been superseded by a bloke that has hardly played football before two years ago. He is contracted however.

Reckon the top 4 are gone, the next 4 have some merit, or are contracted or a bit unknown.
Even though the club only has two picks in the draft, I'm hoping we get rid of at least 6 of the players I listed. Two new draftees (picks 3,4), two more via drafts. ie late pick or rookie and train on, even keep a place for mid season. Recruit one or two players from other clubs. Hopefully promote a VFL, WAFL OR SANFL listed player. Our list as stated earlier is diabolical. The list needs to be turned over, stop the bullshit talk about players like Dow, Sonsie etc. they are no f***ing good. We are waisting resources on players that will never be anything but mediocre at best.

when are the de-listings? are we doing them before or after the B n F night?

I’m sorry this is my fault, I should have realised you don’t understand statistical analysis when you quoted average age.

Let’s say for example you were right and we do replace Kmac/armstrong/Sonsie with Lalor/McAuliffe/Faull… whelp our average age for the last game is 24.47 vs ports 24.86. So yes it does change the statistic and is why the average age stat is so stupid.

We had 11 players under 25, port had 12. We had 9 22 or under to ports 5. They had 4 teenagers we had 3.

So who was really younger?

As for the rest of your rant, McAullife was pick in the team til he got injured and you’re a moron if you don’t think a fully fit Smillie plays this year. We will also have 2xtop 5 picks joining next year, port will have zero top 10 picks joining next year because they spent the pick on Lukocious who likely will play next year.

Big men take longer

Going to get Toby to announce them at the B&F just like Kane Johnson did.

As it stands we're currently the 15th oldest list (24.7) & least experienced(60.7) list heading into 2026. Also our current list make up stands at 35 senior listed, 6 Cat A rookies & 2 Cat B rookies.

By time the trade period rolls around we're a chance to be the youngest and least experienced list which will definitely indicate the next phase of the rebuild is going to be happening next year where we're going to get to see a much younger line up being put on the field.

With all things considered, if we can match this years win tally next year I think we'd consider that a pass.
Progression isn't always linear after all.

Sampson Ryan will be a good player
As Grrr said, he just isn't strong enough. Tall enough, skilled, athletic. But seriously not able to go with the monsters.

And good AFL rucks are monsters.

I want him to succeed. But unless his strength jumps he is on the edge of AFL, but not in it.

Not according to say footywire, we're 25 yrs and 7 months vs their 25yr and 5 months.

So who was really younger?
Port, it's totally fine to use average age as a measure for 'age'.

So yes it does change the statistic and is why the average age stat is so stupid.
Speaking of stupid, you do realise a) swapping players out of the same age (e.g. Faull vs Armstrong), makes no difference and b) players age over time, right? If the only veteran we swap out is Kmac say replacing a 31 yo with a 20 yo, and the other 21 players get a year older, we'll be even older same time next year despite that replacement.

Note in addition ot the delistings obviously Port are seeing retirements from the likes of Boak, Rioli and Atkins. They'll be younger than us R1 next year as well.

McAullife was pick in the team til he got injured
He was ignored at the start of the year and only got a few games later due to injuries to Dow and Prestia. Based off the start of the year, he's behind Ross and Dow in the pecking-order. I'm hoping his star has since risen at least above Dow's but I doubt the coaches have him in the best 22, much less in the best 22 with Smillie. He or Smillie are going to be a casualty of the Prestia resigning.
As it stands we're currently the 15th oldest list (24.7) & least experienced(60.7) list heading into 2026.
Because we're warehousing lots of young players with few prospects like Fawcett on the list and low-ceiling role-players like Green. IMO the best way of judging where a team is at in the cycle would be to look at the age profile by B&F votes. I expect we're quite old on that measure.

The median age of the players is not really an indication.
The median can be blown out by a couple of far older players in the sample.
Just like the Bulldogs' percentage.
It is the third highest in the AFL, but they won blow-outs against mediocre do-nothing teams.
Only two wins against the top eight teams, nine losses.

So we hold onto a kid from 19 to 26 hoping he gets stronger. Even then won't be strong enough.
to add to this; Strength is one thing... having that dawg in you is another.

Samson lacks that grunt, and unlike strength... which can be developed, you either have grunt or you don't.

Imagine if Tim English had the grunt of Toby Greene, he would be a problem! but alas, he doesn't... and he isn't.

that's just how it is.
