Ed Richards is the best player in the competition via Champion data for 2025 (second if Bont qualified).

He produced numbers we dreamed Rankine would have in the midfield.
Daniel hoyne said the other way round tonight.
Bont 1 Richards 2.
Bont been top 10, 8 out of the last 10 years

No

He's 24th favourite for the Brownlow in what is a midfielder's medal and might squeak onto the bench of the AA team

Good season but Worrell will be in the AA starting 18 imho
The betting is probably factoring the fact that umpires only realise a player is good a year after everyone else does. Happens every year - someone has a breakout year, people say they’re a Brownlow chance, they get like 10-15 votes.

Nervous the dogs will sure up there backline and the pies always add players. We need to strike on a Mid but I can’t see who is coming. Honestly all we need is an Oliver type or A grade mid. Surely we have someone up our sleeve.

Tom Powell would be my go to, Oliver and Phillipou also. See if Trac is keen/z.Bailey also.

Yes

Same individual who gave me Rankine mail that I shared here and team selections mail when they hear it.

So I think it is certainly live

But we have learnt to keep cards close to our chest over last couple of years, so doubt it gets too much public attention unless it is looking likely to happen
Further to this chat it’s reported today he is on 1.7m for last few years of contract. Oliver would need to rip this up and start again for it to work re changing clubs….and why would he? Just feels very unlikely IMO

13. CLAYTON OLIVER

Age: 28, Games: 205 (22 in 2025), Contract ends: 2030

The big money that Oliver is commanding from Melbourne will be a sticking point if he tries to find a fresh start for next season. He’s contracted for a further five years at about $1.7 million a year in the final seasons of his deal. If he is to move on, he’ll need to get creative as the interest from Geelong has died down, and no club will want to pay full freight. If Oliver really wants to move he’ll have to sacrifice some cash to get the commitment to be more manageable for a rival.

Verdict: Staying

4. JUDD MCVEE

Age: 22, Games: 65 (17 in 2025), Contract ends: 2025

Melbourne wants McVee to stay and he wants to remain at Melbourne, but he also wants a more lucrative role guaranteed to him and the Demons are somewhat unwilling to promise him anything. It’s unlikely he makes a decision on his future before a new coach is locked in, but considering he hasn’t signed the offer in front of him indicates his uncertainty. There would be a suite of suitors for the rookie draft graduate, including sides outside of his home state of Western Australia. His partner is Lily Johnson, who plays for Melbourne’s AFLW side.

Verdict: Staying

I think you'll find the $$ % picked up by Melbourne would be on a sliding scale.

Oliver can still get the total $ , we can just restructure it to suit our cap

You may find we say it if he wants to come it is a flat deal, no extra $$ per match played

Many ways to make it work

No matter how hard you spin it, if he shifts it will be contingent on him taking one hell of a haircut salary wise.

Yeah, but also a few other machines. It's worth it. I couldn't bench press for like 6 years because my back was so cooked, now I can.
+1

Had a bad neck from a car accident that locked up several times a year until my wife got me into mat then reformer Pilates 15 years ago.

Have not had one reoccurrence in 15 years.

Strongly recommend. being the only bloke in the class took a few weeks to get used to.

Haha I know 🤣 but yeah for the rewards it's fantastic.

Also been doing it for 3 years.

The last proposition one of its many benefits.

OK thanks mate and am appreciating your thoughts and insights. But please try and talk me thru it. He still has 5 years left IIRC and lets assume its 'only' 1.5 per year on average for the next 5 years (has been well reported how his long contract started with unders and then massively beefs up to the large final years numbers of 1.7m ish)

How does this possibly work for both us and Dees? I cant imagine we, or any club, would want to pay him 1m or more based on his exposed form from the last 2 years (ignoring all the other stuff here - lets just focus on footy)

IF Crows were still keen as you say, how does the 1.5m get divvied up between both us and Dees? I assume the contract length stays the same? And clearly we wouldnt want to be paying that much in a trade - lets be generous and say 1 x first rounder this year worth approx pick 22-25 after FS/NGA

Is that how you see it working?

Dees pay 500k per year for the next 5 years?
Crows pay 1m per year for the next 5 years?
Crows pay Dees 1 x first rounder to take him off their books?

I am just not sure EITHER club finds the above attractive but keen to understand how you think this could be structured up (and ideally we would have protections in case he went off the deep end again with all his known previous issues from a couple of years ago)

You may find we do the opposite to how it is currently, front load the hell out of 2026/27 then it tapers off , all the while Dee's pickup a portion of it
Thus why we have had guys like Dawson smooth their deals out
We have the $$ there judging by NWM offer

When Oliver drops off we can then back end a deal for Zac Bailey

Eg.

2026 - Adel pay $1.6m - Dee's pay $400k
2027 Adel pay $1.6m - Dee's pay $400 k
2028 Adel pay $900k - Dees pay $250 k
2029 Adel pay $900k - Dees pay $250 k
2030 Adel pay $900k - Dees pay $250 k

Doesnt surprise me really.

Hes a monster kid that may take time to adjust to senior footy. Wont be able to bully AFL standard defenders like he does in colts.
I think where our 1st rounder likely sits could see us having some interest still.

OK cheers, but just on 6m to Oliver over 5 years with the deal finishing when he is 33-34 scares the shit out of me.

Just not sure we could justify either the value OR risk here - even if we can afford which I agree with you we can. Oliver has been very average the last 2 years - certainly not the dominant bull from 4-5 years ago, partly with the changing (reduced) emphasis on clearance king mids.

Doesnt paying him 6m on his reduced output scare the absolute bejesus out of you? If this was 4 years ago before the massive regression in form and numerous other issues, then yeah lets go for it. But....I cant in good conscience do that deal you mentioned and would actually be surprised if the club does it.

$900k is new $600k with salary cap increases

When you bear in mind the median wage for AFL listed players is $450k it doesn't look as scary

But that’s offset by the man himself.
