2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Now that Harry Boyd has been delisted after 1 x less then average AFL game and 12 x average VFL games, I am going to get on my 'soap box' and highlight I told you so. Its now been proven to be a very poor list management decision at the time, yet the rubbish I copped for having a contrary opinion was interesting. He was never going to be an upgrade on Heath or other rucking options we had on the list.

Now to re-consider what my thinking was at the time as a result of the strength of last years draft.

As a result of jamming Boyd into our last list spot we over looked Lennox Hofmann (NGA medium tall defender), Zak Johnson (midfielder), Cody Anderson (midfielder), Luke Kennedy (midfielder) at the draft.

Then re-added a crippled Crouch at the rookie draft and overlooked other SSP options. Crouch retires after attempting a come back, when that decision should have been made for him much earlier.

Then overlooked this years mid season draft completely where there were players we should have looked at like Tom McCarthy (back flanker ball magnet), Harrison Ramm (200cm key defender), Archer May (198cm tall forward & Ex Dragon player), Liam McMahon (198cm tall forward) or even relisted Oscar Adams we were so short on tall defenders.

Not all the players listed above will have long AFL careers, but the majority will play a lot more games than Boyd was ever going to, some might even become 100-150 game players.
Crouch was re-listed as some kind of loophole with his contact.

The animosity towards rational oppo fans here every year is so old.

The bloke is most likely right, its probably just a part of the contract negotiations. How many times have player agents used St Kilda to had another 20% to their players salary.

It's nice to get some biased opinions on trade value going thenother way to help our anchoring point, otherwise you start getting people talking about Steele getting traded for Ryan and a first round pick.

This is on

McKenzie is a terrific young prospect. Was in great form earlier in the year before his hand injury and hand plenty of experts lauding him.

At current, he’s further advanced than Pou as a mid (I don’t expect this to be the case long term).

He is all class. I hope he’s as keen on us, as we are on him.

No issues with oppo posters until they start declaring what our needs are or aren’t then refuse to answer when questioned.

I'll admit I haven't seen a heap of him.

Is he looking like a Nicky Dal type like he was compared to pre-draft.

We don't have a player of that type in our emerging midfield group. More a team of hard working contested types. Would be nice to have a bit of silk in there to go along with Nas.

Gettable

- running with our interest in JSOS. Think the dogs are still infront. We haven’t met with him but they speculate we won’t need to.

Kinda opened the door to not getting Aleer if we get JSOS.
Silly media. Why would we need to meet with him when his Dad can just face time him?

Nah man, you're being antagonistic.

That bloke didn't say anything controversial.

Basically he's saying hawks wouldn't trade a contracted young first round pick for cheap.

People calling him fringe or depth when he's still only 21 and in a top 8 side is silly.

If Adelaide or Port wanted Phillippou for a mid teens pick, we'd be telling them they're dreaming too.

You can say this is a saints board for saints fans, but at the end of the day you're only calling out for a circle jerk of shared delusions.

He said we had no need. I asked how he would know our needs.

Never debated cost. Just that it’s hard to call him a lock in their best 22 next season when he can’t get a look in now and has been as poor as his rookie season.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The best way I can describe him is he reminds me of a typical Brisbane midfielder.

He’s a bit like Will Ashcroft in that there’s no obviously flaw, but there’s no one outstanding trait. He has capacity to hit the scoreboard but doesn’t do it regularly.

Some would describe him as vanilla but I think he’s a very well rounded young mid.

It looks like the post where you disagreed with him, he was saying it makes no sense for us to offer a trade they'd be satisfied with.

So it seems the debate is cost. I don't think he'd argue we could use him.if they'd give him.to us for a 3rd.

He seems to be suggesting that he was taken with pick 7 and is progressing well. Given where the hawks list is, sacrificing the 3 years of development would be a backwards move for them. So they may not accept our first pick for him, which we may not even be willing to offer.

So there seems to be a good chance, that any deal that could get done, would in fact, make no sense for us.

You're right that I don't know what every single St Kilda player is earning

What I do know:

- What our highest paid player will be paid

- How much the cap is (for 2026 and 2027)

- The recent cap trends

- The current TV rights deal runs until end of 2031

- Other AFL clubs have recently run into salary cap dramas by doing what St Kilda is doing, or similar

What I am assuming with a moderate degree of confidence:

- What our 2nd highest paid player will be earning

- The reality that players don't take pay cuts when they change clubs, usually the opposite

- St Kilda has plenty of exciting young players who'll be demanding significant pay increases as they develop and enter their primes.

- Those players will reasonably be expecting their slice of the pie, knowing how St Kilda has given outside player/s what can only be described as generous deal/s

Those things are enough to have me worried.

If they don't worry you, fair enough.

But suggesting I'm some crazy doomsayer is ridiculous in light of the reasonable basis for my concerns.
It’s not a reasonable basis when you’re just speculating. Literally half the things that you ‘do know’, you don’t actually know.

Flanders > McKenzie, please

and I'd back in Pou to be better than both

can't say I've seen a heap of McKenzie but haven't been blown away by what I've seen

TDK
JSOS > Aleer
Ryan
Flanders

thats an impressive list of additions

Nothing very useful but just an FYI

Have asked around about Cam

Hawks want to extend him beyond his current contract (end of 2026) and a few weeks ago he was telling family he wanted to stay despite lack of game time

This was BEFORE St Kilda’s interest was leaked into the media today

Will get updates when Hawks season ends and he has exit interview

Anyone who has had their head turned be that in work, or football can appreciate how quickly your mind can change. Bringing a bayside boy, back to the bayside club is a further step in the direction of building a Geelong like club.
