And so ends the most painful season since 2005, when I was too young to really know what pain is.
man this season ain't anywhere near the bottom 5 since 2005 for me. last season when we kept on barely defeating horrible teams so we could finish a 'respectable' 11th sucked a whole lot more than this one

2006: obviously
2010: we pissed our pants and threw our toys out of the pram after about round 5 and death marched matthew knights until the end of the season. (as I've previously posted, it's insane we reacted this way when the 2010 team was younger than the 2009 team. what did we expect?). in the end, we won no finals and 34 players got banned for doping as a result of this season. awesome job, way to go.
2012: Injury crisis mk 1. we were 6th after round 16 on 130%. we finished in 11th on 100%. carlton defeated us by 96 points. that sucked.
2013: obviously
2015: somehow, james hird returned
2019: personal choice, as we made the finals this season, but this was the second season in a row where we had just a horrible first half of the season that really smashed my belief. then joey requested a trade
2020: obviously
2022: bit like 2010 in that the death march of the coach was just painful

and still we are not the worst team in the league - 3 worse teams than us...that's all I've got. It was bad.
I genuinely think we were the second worst team this year behind West Coast. Half a game in front of North and 1 game in front of Richmond who had like 6 or 7 top 30 picks in a super draft.

McGrath can go, bye bye.
At the end of 2031

Well get used to it folks.
This is the result of a club that was more about the bank balance than winning games.
A club who kept backing an average list manager.
A club who allowed the one of the biggest **** ups in AFL history to go unchecked.
A club that took two years under the new guys to realise the list needed another rebuild.
We finally hit the bottom of the barrell.

It's probably impossible to roll out a worse back 6 than we did for the majority of this season, but even with an expected improvement there next year it really is a struggle to see where we'll find enough match winners across the ground.

You can reasonably expect a few less thrashing if we can stay mostly healthy, but we are unlikely to see a lot of 'good' football or favorable results

A lot of essendon followers/supporters wanted the dons to finally bottom out.
You got it.
I wonder if North and W.C at the time wanted the same. They lost any form of winning culture then got stuck at the arse end.
Maybe the last 20 years have been solid for essendon and the next 10 years are in the bottom 3.
Deffinately a chance for Kako, Caddy, Clake to hitch a ride in a few years if this doesnt turn around.
I watched most of last night, gross. Our seniors would struggle in the 2's (thats right 3/4 are 2's players)

A few things would have seriously mitigated the damage even though they are obviously more talented with all the concessions they have gotten:

Our players mostly don't have a side step, theirs did.

Our players generally get walked around - surely their must be a way of watching hips and legs to get some idea of the actual direction the opposition player is going so we can lay a bloody proper tackle.

The perennial not holding space and multiple guys charging into a contest letting them get overlaps.

The theory of bottoming out is fine. The reality is, like you say, potentially being stuck there for a longer than expected time. There's really no other way, though.
There's a stench about the playing group that has to be removed, before it taints everyone on the list.

Yeah the Stench is Brad giving a pat on the back to the boys for loosing by +50 a lot of games.
Yes a lot are young, yes probably the biggest injury ravished team outside ww2 teams.
But effort & intent must be shown, or shown the door simple

Bit hard to orchestrate a clean out of sub par senior players without bottoming out. Our issue was we held onto mediocre players for too long rather than investing games into the youth. It kept us off the bottom because bad mature players are more effective than good youth but it was never going to lead to long term improvement
