Coaches votes for 2025 - Back Pocket / Back Flankers ,

NWM - 87
Josh Daicos - 55
Jordan Clark - 41
Josh Battle - 33
Bailey Dale - 32
Dane Zorko - 29
Nick Vlaustin - 29
Lachie Ash - 26

I reckon there’s another Daicos incredibly stiff to be not on a half back flank. Had a way better year than Dale.

Rozee 67 :(

I'm not agreeing with that at all. and you will not convince me otherwise.

All I am saying is you couldn’t pick Bont and not pick Taylor the games he played were just as good as Bont. That’s the issue. There’s going to be a few very unlucky defenders. Worrell probably suffered from the “1st year let’s see him do it again”. I’d have personally put Vlaustin on the bench though 4 mids is overkill there.

Do you honestly think the coaches are genuinely on the money here in terms of their votes reflecting reality?

Personally I don’t.

I’d say they mostly got the right players but for whatever reason their ranking votes or off.

Coaches are as fallible as the umps, but a fair few (impartial) posters on BigFooty are probably closer to the mark.

Wingman's curse.

The selectors are still under the impression Max Holmes has remained a wingman after his elite seasons at half back in 2024 and as an inside midfielder in 2025. Will get the lifetime recognition award when he's 29 after a stack of seasons in midfield. ;)

Just wait for Holmes to be the winger next year lol

How do you think the selectors pick the players ?

What criteria do they use and how does it differ to the way the coaches vote ?
Based on who’s on it I think they legitimately just pick it on vibe and shit talking. Just imagine Pav, Bucks and Jacko all in a room together and tell me there’s intelligent discussion happening.

Worrell or Keane aren’t the flashy picks and have been severely underrated all year.

Swapped back only part way through the season? Did get tagged out a couple of games I think.

His attacking talent would put him top three in this list I’d say, but if you’re balance defence with attack out of the backline might push him down a couple of spots.

Deserves a place among these names.

Lifetime recognition doesn't appear to be a thing anymore

To be fair Battle isn't the flashy pick either

Yeah spent a bit of time in the midfield, early and later in the season.

35% CBAS for the year. next closest is 27% for Nas. Not many of those guys attend CBAS at all

If Aussie Rules footy was an international sport and a real All Australian team was being picked, you wouldn't be loading up the bench with all midfielders.

Seriously, I reckon the All Australian team has lost some of its prestige over the last few years. But thats my opinion.

As always and as it should be, Finals footy will always be the truest and toughest test for players even though the timespan only lasts for 4 weeks (1 month), but thats when the Premiership is won.

How often do we see All Australian players or Brownlow medallists fall down during Finals footy. The pressure and expectation goes up ten levels.
Which is probably the flaw in the format

“All Australian” sort of implies the team you’d pick if you were going to going to pick a side for an AFL World Cup

But what it actually is is a rating of who had strong consistent years

The AA captaincy is weird.

Most years it's the best captain but randomly they hand it to a tall (Cameron, Hawkins, Franklin, Rance) like it's a lifetime achievement award.

I would have had Worrell in for Battle & Elliott in for Bailey. Dawson absolutely should have been captain.

Rekon the fan votes team was a better lineup TBH.

To be fair Rance was VC, and always big comunincator leader. the others weren't even VC's.

Yes Battle never had many goals kicked on him, so surely in a side so dominant, won a lot of games of footy, the coaches would’ve rewarded him with more votes.

Just asking.
Votes usually go to players who are best on ground, battle played his role really well that's why he had not many goals kicked on him, he also influenced results with 5 best on grounds that's why he had more coaches votes then some of his peer defenders.

Battle is close to the most underrated player this season by the general public going off what I've been hearing around the webs.

No question if you were taking the best overall players I’d probably take NWM and then Rozee ahead of the rest of them

If I was trying to pick a balanced best of team out of all AFL players I might take NWM and find a place for Butters I think

It is his 5th AA. I think they tend to select the captain based on that. Franklin was the same.
Had a look back to 2007 and this was the 6th time in that period where the AA Captain wasn't their team Captain.

Rance got it with his 4th AA (got #5 the following year)
McLeod, Hawkins, Cameron it was their 5th AA (first 2 ended on 5)
Franklin and Dangerfield it was their 8th (Franklin didnt add another, Danger probably won't)

Exactly this

I think the all Australian is an icing on the cake award for players that have just been generally awsome for a long space of time

I don’t think it reflects who in the team would’ve the best actual captain at all

Yeah true well said. To be clear as well i don't think Rozee quite had an AA year either

Agree, not sure how vlaustin didn't make the team. Although when you have selectors including Kane & Kane it's understandable.

Question has to be asked: why is Nick Daicos starting on the bench? Like seriously its a legitimate question.

Did the All Australian selectors think that other midfielders had a better season than him?

I guess this is the unique aspect of as i call them "Opinion Awards".

In the opinion of the coaches, Bailey Smith and Noah Anderson won the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award in a tie.

In the opinion of the players, Nick Daicos won the AFLMVP award.

In the opinion of the All Australian selectors, Nick Daicos is placed on the bench in the team.

Now we wait for the Brownlow medal, the key stakeholder this time being the umpires. We will see who they have voted for in their opinion because the votes have been done by them.

On a side note, it was good to see Jeremy Cameron finish 5th in the AFLMVP award.

You love to see Geelong getting the raw end of the stick

Thanks for Clarkie Geelong.
Don't worry, the pick we gave you got you Toby Conway, who played um, let's see........6 games.

The same Jordan Clark who left end of 2021 and missed out playing in a Premiership….checks notes….

In 2022 😂🤭

Oh dear, however will we cope!
Notice how other young blokes played in that Premiership side and had to be patient playing VFL and state league footy? They got rewarded for being team players 🏆

In all seriousness though, congrats Jordan, well deserved AA selection 👍🏼

Clark got 41 as a defender. Would be #1 if you remove the midfielders!
