“You could argue that we have an advantage with academies but if you factor in all the other structural inequalities, it’s almost the only one.”
At least the AFL gave you 'one' (laughable), they generously kept all the VFL structural inequalities in place for us.

PREMIERSHIP DEE WEIGHS MOVE

MELBOURNE flag-winner Charlie Spargo is weighing his future, with the forward garnering interest from a number of clubs including North Melbourne.

Spargo is out of contract and an unrestricted free agent and has been offered a deal to stay at Melbourne, however the Kangaroos are among the clubs eyeing him as an acquisition.

The 2021 premiership player had interest from the Kangaroos at the end of 2023 and decided to stay at the Demons but has come to the end of his contract and is considering his future in coming weeks.

The 25-year-old has a strong link to North Melbourne, where his father Paul played 81 games between 1985-92, and the Roos have been in the market to add to their half-forward ranks.

Spargo played 10 senior games this year after having his 2024 campaign ruined by an Achilles injury, and will play out the season with the Casey Demons in the VFL finals in coming weeks.

He has played 108 games for Melbourne, including a career-best year in 2021 when he played 25 games, kicked 18 goals and was crucial for their forward-half game on the run to their drought-breaking flag. – Callum Twomey
I loved Paul Spargo when I was a young fella, but his son is a notch orv2 above a spud. No thanks.

Forward projections of our kids aside, if you can get 2021-22 era Spargo back, he'd be an improvement over any of our current small forwards 2025 output.

Half of this forum wants Konstanty demoted to the twos. Well here's a less manic version with better footy IQ and a significantly better kick. He's not a prolific scorer, but if we trade him in, I'll bet he kicks more goals than JK next year.
JK will be fine. He has the endeavour, he just needs to kick them when the opportunity arises.

Man, it's getting trying as a North fan having us linked to the absolute weakest talent available every trade period for the last decade. Doesn't even seem like we send out an EOI to anyone above a "Bog Average" rating.

We're desperate for a good defender - OF ANY KIND - and instead we're linked to checks another flaky small forward.

Don’t mind it but there’s still the issue of players opting to go to clubs based on motivation for playing in finals/premierships rather than financial gain. Could just limit all finalists from leveraging free agency at all!
Imagine if some clubs had the ability to offer both! 🤑

Bottom line is the AFL mirrors every other aspect of society; captured by the few, for the few. Arise, comrades!

Asking a dumb question, has he been tried at HBF?

Honestly I have no idea whether its injuries or form or lack of fitness or some terminal decline that hampered Spargo's 2025 output. But watch this and tell me whether you could imagine Konstanty hitting any more than 20% of those shots.

He certainly wasn't soft or slow that year either. Would be the 2nd highest pressure forward we have after JK.

Even the good kicks the ball travels like its twice the weight it should be and hangs for an eternity.

Just the type of kick that would be cut off 100% of the time in our team.

Can't see what Spargo will add to our existing FWD line. Don't think he has been played at HBF at the Dees. From the limited amount I've seen him play, not a player with great foot speed or elite kicking either. We do have Harvey, Payne, George, Duursma, Banch, JK, Stevens, and Curtis. Is it worth giving Spargo a game at the cost of our developing young FWD line? Is not vastly experienced (i.e., over 200 games) either. A role player that was part of the Dees GF team. Not an impactful player at either end of the ground. Would be going down the wrong path if we were to get Spargo.

Couldn’t Zac Fisher just play this role? Isn’t that what he did at the end for Carlton?

Zac Fisher started up FWD and Carlton hoped he could fulfil the HLf-FWD role. Fishy botched that so Voss tried to play him off HBF to use Fishy's elite disposal skills. Went ok at that and got traded to us and has done F@*k all since he landed with us. Jury is well and truly out on Fisher.

We're really scraping the bottle of the barrel huh.
We’re scraping something alright.

Of clubs where players want to go to, we’d comfortably sit 18th of 18.

People need to wrap their heads around that.

We will never hit a premium target.

When things turn we may get better quality but there is a level of player we will simply never attract.

As things stand right now we are in the thick of over paying Mercs and the discarded.

We are such a poor destination that even players we target that we want and that want to come to us, we can’t get them to say it in public.

In terms of trading we could not be lower.

It’s never been brilliant but by god Cam Joyce and him waving wads of cash everywhere slid us into territory of being a joke and we’ve never recovered from it.

We wanted a big fish and ended up with Jarad Polec.

And won’t recover until we rise up the ladder to at least some sort of position that creates some respect.

That's all well and good, and I imagine a lot of people actually understand the level of player that would even consider coming to us.

However, the club itself should also be aware that sometimes the best move you can make in trade week, is to not make a trade.
Just feels that sometimes we sign an absolute spud just to be seen as doing something.

Years back he was one of the best kicks inside 50, but that's probably long ago like Daniel was an elite kick.
Other than that not quick, works hard, but not really a goal kicker or pressure forward from what I've seen.

We are not good at walking away.
