2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Ryder was massive & unfortunately got injured in the closing minutes.
Hanners didn't get higher numbers, but pretty much every kick hit a target.
And bringing up his 'issues' now, is ordinary behaviour from you.
You can choose to think that. I think it is ordinary to take 600k+ a year from an employer and take the piss. We are not a chairity, and he is a big boy.

Regardless, I couldn't care less about Dan Hannebury. It only came up because some are romantising the trade like he was somehow worth it.

It is okay to sometimes just said "The club stuffed that up." I mean we hired Lethers ffs right after he was having an affair with somebody at AFL house. Obviously somebody with questionable ethics.

Then we get screwed over when he looks after this best mates son. It is is this sort of stuff that really makes us like ameteurish at times.

Luckily the club appears to be much more professional at the moment. Let's hope that continues.

Really don't get why we re-signed Dow, would have been one of the first off the list for me.

I think we should definitely try and find a new home for Butler. Maybe North would be interested for a 4th, they were playing Konstanty and he's a step up from him.
Every team needs depth soldiers on f*** all money.

My guess is Dow fits that's role perfectly - if fit of course - which the Saints are clearly backing him to be.

Rekon we only get one of Aleer or JSOS and one of Flanders or CMac.

Yes I doubt that we will land all we are talking with as well.

Add Ryan to that list. Four of the five have multiple clubs chasing them,

Three of the five require trades.

Then there is the variable of whom can/could be traded out, and what trade value could be obtained. If the Cats offer something decent for Marshall, then for our longterm strategy he might get traed. If they only offer unders then our immediate need of good talls, who are good now, triumphs and he stays as the Club is now pushing to play finals in the next two years..

TDK is now a lock. The other names are still just possibilities.

The Club wants to improve our list, and has various players in mind who could help us to be better next year, an then some other whom we will draft whom will more be about the future.

The Trade/ FA Period promises to be a busy one for St Kilda. Whether it is a good period for us remains to be achieved.

I'm hoping we keep Marshall, my reasoning is when we had Ryder pairing with him we looked far better.
I'm also hoping that the name of a player we want actually materialise like Flanders if true.

But, I can't keep hoping for us to march up the ladder, with the 12 months I've been through, I would like to see a premiership.

I don’t know why Voss even wants to stay. He’s going to have to produce a miracle next year to get an extension…maybe 15 wins and a prelim might do it. But the list is falling apart, and club morale is in the gutter.

His continuation is going to be worse than the Hinkley experience this year I reckon.

Such a gutless move by Carlton though. Voss needed to be moved on, and now the players are voting with their feet.
Not sure they have the money to pay him
Seems to have lost the players
Strange decision

I doubt we get both of Aleer & Silvagni likewise Flanders & McKenzie it will one of or the other. Even so there is going to be significant list change and it will be interesting if Marshall and/or Steele are still at the club next year.

If we do lose Marshall Id imagine Heath will be retained, but you would also hope SOS is working on extending Dodson ASAP, before the Adelaide clubs come calling if they havent already.

The other consideration for our recruiters is that Essendon currently have 48 players on their list. At the draft they have two early picks plus two NGA's, so they are going to have to cull 10 at least. Some of their SSP and MSD selections should be of interest to our club, they wont fit them all in.

One of the players they listed was Lachlan Blakiston the WAFL ruckman I wanted over Boyd, the HS reported today that given his versatility playing key defence he will likely get another contract at Essendon.
SteeleyBoy, the greatest false revisionist in our time :tearsofjoy:

Blakiston averaged two hitouts a game for Essendon - he basically only played as a defender.

He did okay as a defender I guess?

BUT let's just be real here. Blakiston is yet to win a game as an Essendon player.

Essendon lost all nine games that Blakiston has played in - I would estimate by an average losing margin of around 40 points too.

There is nothing to crow about here, brother. Boyd filled the exact purpose we wanted - cover for Roma while the younger rucks develop. Worked an absolute treat. Dodson was able to ease in, work on forward craft in VFL and even make his AFL debut as a first season ruckman. That is the reality. The stone cold truth.

I hope Essendon sign Blakiston up and play him - it's going to mean they are probably bottom four next season or close to it.

As for signing any other Essendon fringe players, no way. Our recruiters are not going to consider that.

The plan we have and are doing looks quite good at the moment.

The TDK contract would have triggers built in I hope. I’m not sure why the Saints needed to up the offer from 7 to 8 years. It’s not like any other club was going to offer that deal.

With all the incoming players, you got to be f kidding if Stocker is best 23. Phillipou is another who would want to start finding some consistency because most of his games have been very underwhelming.
Disagree strongly on Pou, but very glad to see people coming around on Stocker. A serious club doesn't pick him every week.

You may’ve missed it, Phillipou only played 7 games this season the rest were missed through injury

I agree. Aleer is option A of the defenders but if we can’t get a trade done we get JSOS, Flanders is option A of the mids but if we can’t get a trade done we target CMac.
I’m not sure how many of the others we end up with. It won’t be seven but will be at least four.

"Good luck with player morale."

Such a bitter baseless snipe. Just **** off already Purple, you turd. You wish North had anything like we do. Let's see Sheezel do what Nas did in the last 5 games this season.
When Carlton has;
  • players asking to be traded while contracted
  • players leaving by free agency (one being a 3rd generation Blue)
  • contracted players being asked to trade themselves
  • One player being left in the VFL so he wouldn't trigger a games clause to extend his contract
  • former exec's trashing the club for their treatment of their most famous family
  • No news worthy re-signings in recent memory
  • 3 assistant coaches given the arse
  • Their most newsworthy player target so far being a delisted small forward from West Coast

And yet it's St Kilda that Purple picks to speculate about player morale?

Gee Purple, i think your rampant St Kilda hatred might be showing.

Especially considering we've already extended Stocker, Dow, Keeler, O'Connell and most importantly Pou and (pending) Windhager.

Not a complete fantasy. Moorabbin facilities now excellent, AFL players want to live Bayside (bit like Geelong on surfcoast) and we must be looking at least strong finals chance over next few years. Seen it all before with Saints but one decade they will get it right. Why not this one?
Don’t underestimate the momentum that will be gained by being able to go down to Moorabbin and watch the reserves run out in the RWB next year.

If we bring in 4 from below:

De Konig
Ryan
Aleer or JSOS
Flanders or CMAC

The biggest gap for me is a lock down defender. I’m not convinced Stocker is the guy and there’s not manager alternatives on the list. Im bullish on Hastie but see him more as an intercepting Half back. Maybe Wilkie but he seems to struggle against elite or quick smalls (Toby green, C Cameron)

In addition, I’m genuinely curious if we can play 4 taller backs in the 1 team from the mix of the below:
Wilkie, Tauru, JSOS/Aleer, Howard, Caminiti.

Unless he comes cheap. I don't think he necessarily plays round one next year. He's still a developing tall and if he ever comes good he looks exciting. I just don't want to pay much for him. Looks a third rounder at best. To me you are getting a guy around Ari Schoenmaker level. Lots to like but far from a walk up best 22 player. JSOS takes a spot in our back 6 and makes us better now but probably starts to slow down in a couple of seasons.
I'd personally prefer Shoey. Arguably they're both about the same in term of one on one defensive ability and marking but Shoey has the boot and more upside being a few years younger
