AFL Player 20: Peter Wright - Club Leading Goalkicker!

Thought Wright was just ok, probably the worst game he's played in the last 6 but still kicked a goal, took a few marks up forward and covered the ruck minutes we needed covered.

People need to stop looking for him to be a superstar and understand what that FWD/RUC role looks like. He's by a long margin our leading goal kicker (avg. 1.9 a game with Caddy at 1.07 our next best) and of the guys in the AFL who average more goals than Wright none average more hit-outs, the only two that have meaningful hit-outs are Sam Darcy and Thithorpe who both average less than Wright (10.4 vs 6.1 for Thilthrope and 3.6 for Darcy).

For comparison here's Wright vs Thilthorpe this season:

Wright is averaging more goals than Treacy, Greene, Naughton, Chol, Walker, Cadman, Hipwood, Lynch, Neale and even our good friend Patrick Voss.

if he was able to maintain his laser like kicking that he had in seasons prior, he'd be looking good. he's done well though, considering most thought his career was done at the start of the season, he's doing well.

Be interesting to see what they do when Langford is back. Can’t play all 4 and you’re not dropping caddy and may.

Why not? Have 1 come off the bench and rotate in with your ruck to have all of Ruck/Wright/May/Caddy/Langford all average 80% game time

Leaves your Forward combinations
Wright Caddy Langford
Wright May Caddy
Wright May Langford
May Caddy Langford

Another statistically great but visually uncompetitive performance to add to the tally.

Shades of Aaron Francis about him how often he gets his fingertips to the ball for no result.

Another good year for 2 Mетр Питер, I genuinely think someone that doesn't have their ruck/forward sorted should be talking to him, hand in glove fit at the Pies and you would hardly blame him if his he had his head turned by an offer.

Has a lot of haters for a guy that does a pretty good job, week in week out given the situation.

A good year?

Good lord

Only survives a delisting because there's a dozen others and our dire ruck situation
And the fact he still has 2 years to go on his contract.

I think Wright's an average player with the ability to be very good, but he's not consistent. When he's switched on and playing well he can definitely kick a bag of goals, but he goes missing too much. Maybe it's not totally his fault as our entry into the forwardline is woeful.

I think Draper leaving would benefit Wright as it'd allow him to take the forward/ruck position and provide backup for Bryan. If Draper stays though he could be squeezed back into the seconds.

He played the forward/ruck role in every game he played.

Much prefer Draper there moving forward or trialling Vigo or May in that role for a year.

Draper was out from round six. 2MP didn’t really do much for the year after that. Another with two years left on his contract, he’s had one very good year and four years of ordinary. Just another Essendon footballer, just OK.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I think he’d be very good in a not trash side… I actually feel sorry for him most of the time… but I suppose everyone is better in a not rubbish side.

Our delivery into the fwd 50 does our forwards no favours.
All of that is noise.

The issues are
  • the number of times Wright gets two hands on the ball and turfs it
  • his lack of speed, agility and intent when we defend means he’s pretty much a witches hat and opposition get overlap immediately
  • for a 200cm, 100kg guy he gets pushed off the line of the ball far too easily
