Delisted Dylan Shiel - hangs up the boots

Shiel was traded to Essendon as a pre-agent 7 years ago, so is not a free agent as he hasn't completed 8+ years with either of the clubs. He and the club have agreed to part ways, presumably because he isn't our first choice in the midfield anymore since we're rebuilding and trying to give CBAs to the kids (when they aren't injured).

Essendon is unlikely to put up much of a fuss on his value. Probably trade for a token pick just to get him where he wants to go in a timely manner, or else possibly DFA.

If anyone needs a bit of experience in their midfield or off-field professionalism around preparation, he's still got his pace and has looked after his body pretty well. Family is settled in Vic but might be willing to move interstate (unclear). You probably wouldn't want him clearing out of your midfield by foot, but his hands are good and he can get away and handball to someone else to kick inside fifty if given the license to do so.

In 2018 it was such a competitive process amongst Vic clubs to get Shiel. Looking back, you've gotta say, it wasn't a great race to win in the end. Two firsts with a second back for a player who was pretty underwhelming and didnt even make it to 100 games so Essendon won't have access to his sons if the rule sticks around.

Anyway, I think he's no longer AFL level, only useful as a veteran presence.

As a third string break in case of emergency mid for a game or two I could see all of Collingwood, GWS and Hawthorn taking him on minimum pay for a year.

But just as likely I can see nobody taking him.

Can't see a 32 year old Shiel appealing too much. The Saints taking a 30 year old Macrae made sense because he's still an elite clearance winner and was surplus to requirements at the Bulldogs. Shiel just isn't that good any more hence Essendon used 44 players and he still wasn't best 22 every week.
