That’s one thing I wouldn’t do as it takes away an essential asset for a potential Butters trade.
Potentially. History suggests free agents who are matched and then traded end up getting where they wish to go. If Butters wants to come to the Dogs, he will get here and Port will likely get unders for him (which is why I'd at least be open to fielding options for him this year if I were Port).

We can also trade two years into the future as well, and stuff always comes up - especially with us, allowing more draft capital to come in.

If it's me, and I can get Ridley for a future first I'd probably do it, and figure out another way to bring in a first round pick next year if Butters is in play.

For sure. More meant that in my view our 1st this year is a bit more expendable than our future 1st. Ultimately we simply can’t go into the new season with the same defensive mix, so if we are looking at Ridley I’m all for it.

Butters will be a restricted free agent right?

If Port are bad as expected next year, it’s likely a top 5 pick will be more attractive that a couple of mid to late firsts after a possible match.

There’s a fair bit of underrating of Ridley’s ability on here.
When on the park and fit ,he and Merrett are their two best players.
And no he is not just a medium interceptor as some here are saying.

If , and it’s a big if , the dogs thought they could rehabilitate him , I would be all in.
A fit Ridley would be great for us, but his history says he may be only good for 10 games a season.

Ridley isn’t and never has been a bulking KPD which is what we need

What’s the better option?

$800k & no draft capital for JSOS or $800k and lose out first rounder for Ridley. It’s a pretty clear option for me.
Personally I’d rather sos , i would even prefer butts or Tyler young. Ridley would come with a steep price and feel he’s pretty similar to what we have currently

Yeah in a perfect world he exercises his rights as a free agent and Port accept the compensation but there are just enough variables to consider when weighing up the risks of trading out of next year/2027's draft. Do they bounce due to the sugar hit from a new coach? Their midfield is still pretty strong, they did play in a prelim in 2024 so there's enough there and this year was always a gap year due to Ken finishing up.

I'm still on the side of control what you can control and if we can improve our defensive stocks with future picks, do it.

For a cheap small forward pick up
I wouldn't be against Davey JR from Bombers

Don't feel like he had a good development plan while at Bombers
I’d back our player development in over Essendon any day of the week. I also feel the same way about Tsatas.

Plays on all types.
But what would I know , so not trying to convince you.
I've seen him beat Naughton multiple times and could certainly play on the Curnow, Cameron etc. types. I wouldn't be playing him on the Ben King or Thilthorpe types.

Regardless, his best role is the floating intercept defender so I'm not sure why we would recruit him to make him play at full back on the most dangerous key forwards.

Bulldogs were 4th best at stopping opposition moving the ball from the defensive 50 to their forward 50. 11th worst at stopping opposition moving the ball from defensive 50 to a score. System is fine, no Jones and Duyrea hurt us big time, we need better defenders in that back 6. A new key back is a must. I still think Lobb and O'donnel can be good enough 2nd and 3rd talls but that number one is a must. A decent medium defender would be nice as well, hopefully Sellwood can develop.
I think the stats you've mentioned are a reflection on our system. Opposition sides are happy to flood our defence and our forward line gets so crowded it's difficult to score. Our high press makes it difficult for opposition sides to exit their defence without it coming back in but when they can get a secondary possession of en exit from 50 they then have a completely open forward half to kick to which is nearly impossible to defend.

Hard to get it from our 50 to theirs but easy to score when they do.

This is exactly how Fremantle got on top of us. Roll the dice on a deep kick out of defence to a contest and have crumbers running past. If they don't get the ball we are just kicking it back into a crowded forward line against a set defence. If they do get the ball they are streaming forward with all the space in the world to kick to.

It really wouldn't matter what type of defender we have back there. A bigger key back gets burnt on the lead into space and a more nimble one gets out muscled with a kick to advantage. I'd hazard a guess that a comparatively high percentage of opposition inside 50s ends in a one on one contest or an uncontested mark.

I guess all players except those involved in the VFL finals plus Marra have an end of year interview. I would think the dogs would know their payout figure for Marra hopefully less than 50% of next year's salary. The quicker we get it done the better and move on. Unfortunate, the first number 1 pick we have had since Adam Cooney turned into a train wreck.

There is a silver lining normally in not getting number 1 picks it means you are not on the bottom.

I could wrong but isn't Butters just out of contract end of next year? Free Agent the year after?

Marra to the bombers for Ridley- I’m sure they would back their Kulture to turn Marra around being a “big club” right???
