I absolutely love the graphic weaponry imagery that accomapnies trade updates. Mega bomb, huge info nuke etc.

There's a dystopian thought exercise about how Cal Twomey would have announced Hiroshima and Nagasaki if he were a newsreader then
"Millions are fleeing the absolute firestorm that has erupted at Nagasaki park. Geelong and Hawthorn the most likely destinations at this stage."

All these trade targets… are we gonna blow all our draft picks again? The plan is clear now, to elevate ourselves from hopelessness back to the vortex of mediocrity.
It seems there is no clear direct path from hopelessness back to contending, so we may have decided to go via mediocrity first, hoping to use it as a springboard :)

We are scraping the bottom of the barrel if the best we can do is Spargo and Tsatas...I'd rather just keep Phillips.
Well, while I can see your logic, one can also mount an argument that we've already seen what Phillips has to offer, while the other two may offer something different in our environment. Sticking with the same old, given that Phillips was essentially fit all season yet managed only 7 games for a bottom 3 side, doesn't bode well for him staying.

I've already seen what Spargo and Tsatas have to offer and the two of them aren't upgrades on what we already had.

2024 Eddie Ford played 18 games and kicked 15.11...Nearly matched Spargo's best year at 18 goals.

A change of environment isn't going to make Spargo have more goal sense or make him less injury prone.

A change of environment isn't going to make Tsatas improve the worst ball drop in the history of the game.

Fisher/Daniel and co prove that we shouldn't be going after other clubs rejects for the sake of it.

What were his underage strengths? It was a pretty hot draft so even to push top 10 he must have done something well?

Would he be any chance to become a contested/defensive inside mid?

Knows how to find the footy, which speaks to his footy brain and understanding of where to be and how to time his runs to different spots to get on the end of it. He's super clean and one-touch with his handling of the ball too.

If a team is playing really simple footy (get ball, kick long to contests and get it forward at all costs) then he'd be fine

No chance at becoming a contested/defensive inside mid because he just doesn't tackle and is too weak to stick them - even playing full time mid in his 18th year for Oakleigh, he only averaged ~32% Contested Possessions.

One of the things I mentioned in his draft year is that, despite his size (187cm) and quickness over a short distance, he just doesn't play with any sort of dare in the midfield - he doesn't try and break tackles and so he's very vanilla in tight. His height and size would suggest he COULD be an LDU-type that wins the ball inside and breaks through tackles into the outside, but he's not even close and has just never showed that.

Also something really odd is the discrepancy between his pre-season testing data and National draft data:
2023 Pre-season
20m: 2.935
Vertical: 93cm
Agility: 8.213
Yo-yo: 680

2023 National Combine:
20m: 3.043
Vertical: 79cm
Agility: 8.438
2km: 6 minutes 58 seconds (12th worst at this combine - 8 out of the 12 worse than him were 196cm+, and his 2km was worse than Duursma's)

His pre-season testing suggests there's an explosive athlete with real scope for improvement in the right system, even with his deficiencies.
His National combine testing data suggests he's a vanilla plodder with no physical trait that stands out who, because he's poor by foot and doesn't have a defensive side, has basically no hope at AFL level.

I do hear ridiculous things on here from time to time, but this comment is right up there. Before we even look at the dud comment... how will he not get a game when they have O on his last legs, and Fort or Smith as backups?
Sam Draper is one of the most ordinary players I have ever seen.

if you listen to the wording used on both Spargo and Tsastis....Spargo they say we have an interest. No mention of contract offer or meetings ect...Either Spargo Management leaking to get more money/years or its a very very passing interest.

Tsastis, is probably similar. Usually, when there is an offer, they will say so, if both of these cases, sounds like it more manager driven than club driven

Hope you are correct

I’m not necessarily anti Tsatas as such, other than that he is the worst kick in the league I reckon, but **** me if we pay up for him while giving Phillips away I think it’ll be the final nail in the coffin for our putrid list management

Spargo is already annoying enough, because there’s not some elite talent there that is just waiting for a go, but to buy high/sell low on essentially a similar player (depth midfielder, lacks the toolkit to be elite) would just be dumb

Agreed on Spargo, Tsatas was too throwaway a comment though to be manager driven. If anything, it was just Sam McClure making something in his head pretend to be true.

It's understood that Japan think Pearl Harbour is gettable.

I completely get that posters are frustrated / underwhelmed with the links to Spargo and Tsatas sadly I think that's the shallow pool we're swimming in; under-performing, fringe best 22 players. The other shallow pool is obviously the aging veteran who believes he has a few more years in him but the incumbent club are only offering a one year deal.

If we do end up with Spargo and / or Tsatas hopefully they can have a "Darling / Parker" type impact on our club where they are better than our collective expectations and contribute to us being a better team and more wins.

If that happens and we rise a few spots on the ladder then they've served their purpose and hopefully we can attract a better standard of player this time next year.

History says our improvement is incremental, so until we make that "leap" Spargo and Tsatas are the type of players we're going to attract.

Is Spargo damaged goods after breaking (or Dislocating) his shoulder last week? We seem to love investing in damaged goods, so Rawlings is at the printer right now with his hard coded 4 year offer ready to go. He just has to delete “Daniel” and insert “Spargo”. He is a genius.

Sam McClure logic:

Tsatas = shit
North = shit
Tsatas to North

I'm pretty confident that this is the depth of this trade link. Cleary even pushed him on it lol

Acknowledging this is a very entitled and selfish request since I'm not the one putting his hand up to do the work, but I recall at this time last year there was a stickied post at the top of this thread that was kept updated with links to latest rumours and a summary of who we had been connected to.

Is it possible to get that again this year?

Pretty crisp summary. We aren't attracting the cream of the crop. We need to capitalise on the sad boy that watched two of his best mates go to North in the same draft then got taken by Essendon, misused and eventually coached into submission by a megalomaniac from St Kevin's.

Get him in for a 4th rounder, put him in the Shipping Container of Happiness and Joy, let him go to a few indie rock concerts with George and eventually we will have a passable backup wingman if Dylan Stephens breaks a nail
