2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

In the next few years Wilkie, Sinclair, Marshall & Hill's contract will come off the books and we'll have ample cash to pay the young players coming through.
Correct. Add in Wood, Steele and Macrae to that list. Every one of their contracts ends in 2027 so we have the next 2 years sewn up. By then we'll be able to keep on whoever is still playing well (?Sinclair, Wilkie) at likely reduced $$ if necessary if we're looking like we'll be successful.

Whilst having so many contracts ending in 2027 is a bit of a risk in terms of there being an exodus then... if we're successful then I doubt that will occur en masse. It would also allow us to say to the younger stars... hey... in order to stay successful we need you all to make a pact to take slightly unders in order to keep the group together. At present that has limited appeal given we are not currently successful. But by then the club really will belong to Nas et al.

I think we really ****ed his development trying to turn him into a midfielder. Looked fantastic as a small forward.
If I recall correctly, he wanted to be moved more into the midfield and ultimately that's why he left, Bombers offered more the a mid/fwd role he wanted that we wouldn't give him.

Media seems quite adamant it's going to get Carlton band 1. Will be interesting to see how that plays out. They need all the help they can get.
I don't think they're getting two band 1 picks. GWS got 1 x band 1 and 1 x band 2 last year. That looks most likely.

Pies and Hawks have had Frampton and Barass. Thats the Howard/Camma role imo (Crows have Murray i think).

You still need a negator so the interceptors (Battle, Howe, Worrel) can do their jobs.

Were real tall regardless but Wilkie and probably Aleer can play both but im not sure we can have JSOS, Howard/Camma, Wilkie, Aleer and Tauru, thats 5 starting back spots by talls. So were at least one short to have to running back and the small defender IMO.

Tauru likely winds up forward IMO.

There is no one right way to structure a backline.

Barrass is 194cm and is Hawthorn's tallest key back.

Melbourne won a flag with similarly sized key defenders.

In a perfect world, you have Harris Andrews (200cm) or Alex Pearce (201cm) but defending is much more about craft than height.

I am pretty bullish on a mix of Howard/Caminiti (199/198cm) together with Wilkie and JSOS. Tauru and others will need to develop in the twos or fight for a spot.

Nope. These players all had their contracts heavily front loaded. That is why we have so much cap space to spend big.
Hill´s last two years will be on very small wages, the others very much unders, having taken the early bump of front loading.

Having said that, we will have. a plan for paying the young players coming through..

It has clearly been a well thought out strategy to get in a lot of young players, allowing us to front load the current stars, thereby creating a warchest that we are now splashing, to the general shock and amazement of the general AFL community.

Nice thoughts. It's also nice for a smaller club get the drop on a powerhouse for a change, but don't let it fool you. Like TDK he came for the $$$ and years. But that's ok, we know the lay of the land and this reality had been coming for years.
Collingwood, Hawks, Geelong etc have the advantage of being successful and can attract players for less money, however the only way to become successful is to attract players, and then some may come to the club BECAUSE it is successful.
Anyway good luck in the finals. I am not a Collingwood hater and prefer you lot win than others.
Harry Perryman went to the pies on 900k a year and he certainly ain’t worth that.
Didn’t hear too much talk of collingwoood overpaying for a depth player

No.

We have cap space in large part due to the amount of 1-3 year players on our list

Whether we are slightly overpaying for some players isn't really a big deal IMO, the fact we are getting multiple players nominate us suggests we are doing something right. On top of that, we've gotten a good number of games into some talented young kids in the last 2 - 3 years, so I think it's the right time to pull the trigger on these moves. Particularly with the Tassie drafts incoming.

ok saints fans hear me out

can you please pay Jade Gresham 50 million dollars a year so he can leave us?

Please?
Really don't know what you are complaining about, you got Parish, Jackson Bird AND Gresham from the Carlisle trade.
That Dodoro always won a trade.
